picture in picture "playing through commercials"

PVR it and watch it later? Much more bearable.

They are blending the golf coverage and commercials in a really greedy and half-assed way. I'm just saying this is really bad incase anyone hasn't figured it out yet. Even if you DVR it you still get force fed advertising. I don't mind watching commercials but what they did this week was unpresentable. They did "picture in picture" during critical golf shots. I'd rather they keep the commercials and the golf separate and edit it so i see everything important.

I like it. I wish they did it the whole time and for all TV in general.

Absolutely agree. I'd much rather see uninterrupted play (even w/o sound) than just a commercial. I wish they'd implement this in all golf tournaments. Or a pay per view w/o commercials at all.

You should make an app that is exclusively for golf fans at the tournament to upload their videos to.

Like snapchat or periscope but exclusively for golf and fans at the tournament

Just an idea. Was thinking how to use internet and technology to eliminate dependence on the networks

Internet tv going to take over eventually and I know there's no substitute for the professional productions, but alternatives cut into their dominance and force them to maybe make it a better. I dont mind it as it is for now. Its well done

I honestly preferred it to the alternative of cutting to a commercial break. I don't need to hear the commentators blab about what's going on when I can see it for myself. I liked that I could still follow the action by watching, and I didn't have any issues seeing what was going on when I was ~25 feet away from the 50" TV in the pro shop.

I would say they charge more for the play through commercial breaks. You can't fast forward through and the audio from the commercial paired with the small screen golf action was 10x more effective in my mind as far as actual advertisement. Thinking back I can remember several of the play through commercials during the Ryder Cup where as I couldn't tell you a single one from Monday Night Football last night. I would venture to say that we are seeing the future of golf commercials.

It's not in my nature to be
mysterious, but I cant talk about it
and I can't talk about why.

This picture in picture "playing through commercials" garbage is the most evil form of advertising that i could imagine. The golf is tiny and no sound. I totally miss everything that happens. I'd rather just watch commercials. I pray they don't make this standard for all tournaments. I have a bad feeling

I'm watching a replay of the Ryder Cup final round. I'd forgotten how much I hated those play through commercials. I agree with all the comments about having a nice TV and a small PIP just way too hard to watch, and the commercial distracts from the golf. I also depend more and more on closed captioning to help me understand what's being said, and of course they don't caption during ads. Way too distracting for me.

Buy a ticket and go to the event then.

Cripes, you just saw the Ryder Cup for free on network TV. All you needed was a TV and a digital antenna. And you're complaining that the network didn't make the picture in picture box bigger? LOL

Oh, yeah, just for the price of $1000 ticket, $500 airflight, $200 per night hotel plus food and drink. Free choice and all that.

There's a variation on this that I've seen (and detest) lately. When one tournament is wrapping, especially in the case of playoffs, and another tournament broadcast is starting, they'll show both at the same time in little PIPs. The first time I saw it was a month or so ago when the LPGA's Nomura beat Kerr in a long, and dreadfully slow example of Kerr playing slowly. They mostly showed them in a split screen, going full every once in a while. I find that really hard to follow. Also, I need close captioning to really understand, and that goes away when two events are playing simultaneously.

Given the alternative of not seeing the golf, this is vastly superior.

I'd rather see a constant ad ticker on the bottom than the current TV paradigm.

I cannot stnad the distraction of a rolling ticker. I would be in favor of this for ads since I cut a piece of black cardboard and tape it to the bottom of the TV to avoid the Fox rolling ticker.

I'd say 1% of most people's purchases are due to tv marketing. Your post is spot on.

It's all about money. Advertisers know you DVR sporting events and fast forward past their commercials so they've created a way to force you to watch the commercial and the broadcasters get to charge extra for it.

So all these companies that spend millions for a 30 sec ad during the super bowl have no idea what they're doing?

I LOVE it..

In fact, I constantly bring up the guide on my DirecTV box now just so I can watch the tiny golf all the time...

I hope the folks at golf channel/NBC are listening to this. This play thru is killing me. I feel like half the shots take place during a play thru. I don't consider it that I'm receiving coverage during a play thru. I can barely see the screen and am receiving no commentary. It seems like they're so often! I also don't even notice what the advertisements are. I don't remember one from the entire tournament. It makes the viewing experience so much worse. I completely tune the entire broadcast out during them. When I DVR it, I fast forward through all playing thru. Please stop.
