Will Jordan pass Jack?

As most know, Jack holds the most prestigious record in golf - 19 second place finishes in majors.

Jordan now has 3 runner-ups, while Jack only had 1 at the same age. Can anything stop Jordan from becoming the GOAT?

Huge Spieth fan but too early to tell.. plenty of years ahead of him.. better shot than most.

 

His driving needs to improve but hopefully not at the cost of his irons/short game.

The comparisons to Tiger Woods/Jack Nicklaus, given his age, are inevitable.

 

Hopefully Jordan is smart and doesn't make the following mistakes:

1. switch equipment, particularly a switch that includes the golf ball

2. listen to any teacher on the planet that wants him to rebuild his golf swing... ever

3. put his personal life before his golf for at least 10 years (sorry girlfriend, peace out)

 

If he can follow those 3 simple rules... he can make a run at accomplishing some seriously rare things in golf that are among only a handful of players.

This debate sucked when we did it for 20 years with Tiger... can we not do this again?

 

When you look at 1st and 2nd place finishes, to me, no one even touches Jack... ever. And the money incentive wasn't there to compete hard in your 40s back then either, else it would have been a straight slaughter.

 

Jack was better, Tiger was flashier. Jordan has the "it" factor and there's no reason he can't make a big dent.

I was shaking my head when this inevitable thread popped up. But why do they? It finally occurred to me that we love witnessing greatness. I caught the tail end of Jack, saw all of Tiger, kept hoping with Phil.

 

While I would love to see it I just don't think JS will be as good as Tiger or Jack. He does know how to win though. Jack must be standing on an incline. He's nowhere near as tall as Miller & Weiskopf. Is that Ken Venturi with the microphone? Ahh, the Merry Mex!

Every few years we get a "Next Nicklaus" on tour. Most were worthy of the discussion (See Miller, Crenshaw, et al), but only Tiger came close. Maybe a more accurate comparison to Jordan is Tiger, though I think he was more dominant at a comparable age to Spieth. Still, winning 3/4 of the Grand Slam before his 24th birthday is incredibly impressive. Only Jack can say that. This is going to make for a very interesting PGA in a few weeks.

I do think he has an outside chance. But there can only be one 'good' answer in this thread, and that's no.

 

If you say 'yes', and he doesn't win another for 3 years, then there's a chance someone revives this thread and you're embarrassed. If he does actually do it, he won't do it for another 15 years most likely at the very least, when this thread is in the dark depths of the internet and the same topic has been brought up another 100 times in the meantime.

Except for 3 majors, JS isn't in the same conversation as Jack and Tiger at this point in his career. Jordan his missed more cuts already at age 23 as Tiger did in his entire career.

The staggering hypothetical questions posed over and over again, I do not get. Jordan has talent now, but it has to last for years at a rate far better and more consistently than we saw today to convince me that he will have 19 majors.

This is very well put, actually. I do agree with others that his driving accuracy has to improve. I don't even think he has to get longer, just more accurate. Although his record to date is undeniable it's hard to imagine that he will be able to achieve that level of success for a period of two plus decades while spraying it all over the place.

 

We can obviously debate anything we want to, but I think a more reasonable question right now is will he get to double digit major wins?
