I love it. id rahter have small golf than no golf. Pretty baffled that this offends anyone this much lol

This times 1000.

I guess some people would rather watch commercials with no golf. Bizarre!

I'm not convinced we're getting "more golf". It's not as if all the commercial are play thru. There are still full commercials and I haven't seen any numbers showing there are fewer commercials or fewer minutes of full commercials. If there were, NBC wouldn't hesitate to tells us they're how many they're giving us. These play thru could be in addition to the full commercials we already get and thus diluting the content.

We know sports are doing anything to add that incremental ad dollar. Corporate logos on jerseys in many sports, signs in the rough on European tour, more and more logos every year on every playing field, more and more on tour pros apparel. The wind monitor, replay, pitch zone, everything is brought to us by someone. It shouldn't surprise us to think that the ultimate goal will eventually come to forcing us to be marketed too during the entire broadcast just like every webpage we're on.

Racing has had it for years. I really don't understand what you guys are complaining about. A lot of you say you watch golf with the TV muted because you can't stand the commentators.

I for one like it.

Do you like it more than regular full screen commercials or do you like it more than regular full screen golf? That's the question. Some of who seem to like believe it's replacing full commercials. Some of us (me included) don't believe it's a substitute for full commercials but for full golf.

Problem is, before they'd record, say, the leaders teeing off and then replay it after the commercial.

Now you just get the mini-screen version with no sound.

Doesn't matter much on a Friday, but on the last day I want to see the leaders playing in full screen with sound and commentary.

No, I don't like it more than full screen golf. But, I don't think that it takes away from full screen golf. I would take this split screen option over any fluff piece that would be played. Or just listening to the commentators.

I think some of you guys need glasses or a bigger TV. Live coverage is better than delayed. Seems like change is difficult for some of you.

So let's see. I've recently had lasik and vision is now 20/15 vision, so no need for glasses. The TV is a two month old 70" samsung LED so no need for a bigger TV. It's not that I can't see the golf, it's that I don't prefer seeing it in that format. I would rather a few minute delayed coverage in full screen than live in some sort of watered down version. Besides, it's not that change is difficult, but just because something has changed, it doesn't necessarily mean it's better. Some changes are just worse.

the whole issue with this is that it lets the networks air even more commercials... i meant they had commercials during the preshot routine of the final groups on the back 9 of a major.... thats not normal... so its not that we are "getting" something extra by seeing the small pic while commercials are on.. its that they are now alloweed to show more commercials that we cant fast forward through without mising something...

Exactly my point. It's not replacing commercials. It's replacing the actual golf coverage. I think it was on 17 for Kuchar's third shot maybe, he was literally almost ready to hit and they were still in the play thru mode and they switched back at the very last second. I was asking myself "are they really going to show a key shot on the 71st hole of a major in this format?"

I think it's a brilliant concept.

The alternative is *no* golf and just watching a commercial or changing the channels as the commercials run.

Here, I get to watch golf while the commercial is still running. Advertisers have to like this because it allows them better exposure to the viewers and I still get to watch golf without changing the channels.

I disagree that it's the only alternative. This presumes that the play thru commercials are instead of the standard full screen commercials. A lot of folks seem to think it's a substitute for the full commercials. To me, since the full commercials still happened during the telecast, it wasn't instead of. It was in addition to. It literally seemed like there was a play thru or a full screen after almost every shot by the final group yesterday. There were so many shots trying to watch in a play thru coverage which was silent coverage with no Maltbie type providing insight on the yardage, club, wind, break of the putt, lie, etc. There's a lot you can't see from just watching and a lot of that was sacrificed.

Besides, are the ads really reaching the viewer? I honestly cannot recall one advertisement that was played during play thru advertisement.

It all depends on how big your tv screen is,a small screen then you probably got really annoyed.....bigger screen tv's really not an issue, you still saw some golf

and just tried to block out/ignore the right side commercial part.IMO

It wasn't consistent all the way through though,as sometimes it was just a commercial with no PIP.

As a few have mentioned, it is unclear if this is "innovative improvement" or a "bait and switch" tactic. I don't know what the standard break down for commercial's are during a normal broadcast so I am not going to jump on the band wagon until I see some statistical evidence that they are taking normal commercials and giving us "play through" or they are simply adding more commercial time and disguising it as "play through". It seems to me that the "play through" was adding commercial's to what was before stand alone golf coverage vs. adding golf coverage to stand alone commercial time. But I am willing to have my gut feel proven wrong.

Love some of the defenders. "you got to watch for free." No, there were commercials. "I still got to see it live." Sure, in a small box, not to be replayed again. Whereas had they cut away to commercial, they would have shown it when they got back.

To all of you who think this is such a good idea, then why is it that there are always golf shots going on, but the Jimmy Roberts stuff, or the long bits of talking with two guys on camera never are on during the "playing through"? There are poor production decisions all around. "Playing through" is one of them. At best, we the viewer get the worst of both worlds. We get a commercial, with shots in a small screen that we need to work to even decipher, that won't be shown again. This isn't a good thing. Why not just stick a logo in the corner of the screen for the duration of the broadcast? Or do networks also own the companies that produce the commercials, and thus create their own supply of work?

Yesterday was also convenient for it because there were really only two guys in it. Besides Kuch and Spieth, they could "play thru" during the other players because they were basically out of it at that point. What happens when there's 5 or 6 guys within 2 shots with 5 holes to go. Who are you going to "play thru"?

ill boil it down... If anyone here thinks the networks are doing anything new to "help" the viewer you are dillusional.... They only change to make more $.... what makes more $? more commercials.... or at least commercials that they can "gaurantee" wont get fast forwarded through.... there is no free lunch... we pay for sat service... and we knew we had to see commercials... then the DVR came out and we payed more for it to not watch commercials... well now we are watching commercials AND watching some of our coverage that we already paid for on 13 inches of our 70 inch TV...which we also paid dearly for.... any questions? seems easy to me to see that we are paying more for less now.. which is generally the way of the world...

Completely agree. The end result will be like other mediums of content. How much of a magazine is advertisements? Webpages, even our beloved WRX, are littered with ads all over the place. Every page has ad value whether it's full page, half, a small corner, etc. Every page can be sold. The same goes for a television program or sports telecast. Every minute can be sold and sometimes just segments of the screen. Eventually I wouldn't be surprised if the networks tried to run the entire program split screen. I'm as capitalist as they come and the networks have every right to manage their content as they please, but they also run the risk of tarnishing the content so much that they lose viewership and then potential ad revenue. The point is at what point do they compromise viewers experience enough? I think we may be getting there with play thru.

To all of you who think this is such a good idea, then why is it that there are always golf shots going on, but the Jimmy Roberts stuff, or the long bits of talking with two guys on camera never are on during the "playing through"?

How would you proposed to handle the audio during the "long bits of talking" in this situation?

I guess until we have specific stats on commercial length, we're guessing if the "play-through" has more or less commercials. Just a general "feeling" to me is that we did not have more commercials.

I've sent a message to Martin Kaufman who is the GolfWeek TV critic to see if he has any info.

Well, actually, it was a roundabout way of saying get rid of the useless crap they fill broadcasts with. "playing through" might be tolerable if you didn't lose so much of the "broadcast time" to the inane conversations, puff pieces, etc. Show the damn golf.
