Talamonti Shaft review

The best shafts you've never heard of
Hey all. I've been bagging these for a while now, and just wanted to share my thoughts on them.

I have played a million and one different shafts up to this point in time. My favorite shafts before were the Diamana BlueBoard for fairways, and the WhiteBoard for the driver. I love the feel, and kick of those shafts, but the price has always been a turn off to me.

I grabbed a PD-80 X and tipped it an inch for my 3 wood. The shaft was perfect right out of the box. Great weight, just like the BB83 X, and a nice smooth feel and kick. The shaft spins less than the BB83, and launches on a similar trajectory. It is probably closer to a heavy Fubuki than it is a BB. The feel isn't quite as smooth as the BB or Fubuki, but it isn't far off either. The dispersion is unreal on this shaft. I haven't hit one more than 10 yards offline yet with it.

After the success with the PD-80 X I grabbed a PD-70 X to put in my driver. I was terrified when I was told to tip it 1.25", but it feels awesome. I have never tipped a shaft that much and had it feel like that still. The shaft is just as tight as the PD-80. What surprised me was the torque rating. 3.7° in the PD-70 X seemed like a ton to me. I guess tipping it all that way helped out. The shaft launches maybe a hair lower than a Fubuki. Really close though. I am getting a degree less launch with it than I was the Axiv Core Black that was in it, and that is exactly what I was hoping for.

I have one more shaft that I tried for another driver, a PD-70 Tour X. I tipped it a half inch, and it CPM's exactly the same as my PD-70 X, but launches more like a WB than a Fubuki. This shaft definitely handles a harder SS. It has a torque of 3.6°, and again, it doesn't feel like it is that high. I would put the shafts up against any other shaft on the market. I have been more than satisfied with all 3 of them, and definitely intend to keep buying them when I get new clubs.

All in all, if you are looking at a very good high end shaft without the price, I would give these a look. At $120 a piece new, they are much cheaper than a new Diamana or Fubuki.

Will,

Starting completely over, would you go with the Tour X 70 in the driver and Tour X 80 in the 3 wood? Whats the heaviest fairway model they make. You've peaked my interest.

I would stay with what I have. I don't need the lower Tour X launch in my 8.5° and 13°. If I was playing a higher lofted driver and fairway then I would go Tour X. Phil told me he made a couple 95 gram fairways that tested really well. I would try one if I could get my hands on it. I'm waiting for him to release a hybrid shaft now.

You can get them directly from him at [email protected]

Great review Will. I agree 100% that these things are money. I put one in my Adams, and after trying 3 other shafts, none of them can compare. Nice launch, no excess spin, and straight every time. Dispersion is tight. With the other shafts (including the stock matrix in R flex an X flex), this was not true. I can very much feel like I'm loading the shaft, and get a nice kick at impact. I too was intrigued by these, because of how they play like a low torque shaft, yet they have a torque rating greater than 3.0. I was amazed at how well Phil was able to fit me through a couple of e-mails. He recommended 1-1.25 inches based on what I told him and the final club length. I ended up splitting the difference at 1.125 and it is awesome. Thinking about shafting up my 4-wood with one, but I do like the Bassara, and I don't "get after" that club as much as my driver. Plus I don't want to get DQ'ed from the 14-club contest on a shaft technicality!

William, can you give a comparison versus a Matrix M2 series shaft? You know I'm a kool-aid drinker for Matrix... :D

Not really. I have never hit a Matrix shaft long enough to know what they do other than not work for me LOL. I think they will launch a little higher than the M2 shafts though.

do they have a website?

Not that I am aware of. Pretty small operation. Email is the best way to reach him. The only way I found out about him is because he is about 30 miles away from me. He used to make those Advanced Shaft Dynamics shafts (pretty good shaft I had in a V-Steel), the purple one Vijay played for a bit. The Talamonti shafts are the newer version of those, and they are a big improvement IMO. The old shafts were great, but the newer ones feel much better and are tighter in dispersion.

What kind of cpms are you looking at with the tipped X and the less tipped tour X? 275-280ish?

Perfect. If Im gonna go with something heavy[85g+] for the 3 wood not sure if I want the very tipped X or the Tour X. Im thinking Tour X right now.

I think Tour X will be better for you. You are a hitter right? I am more of a swinger.

Never really understood the difference really.

He is pretty smooth for how far he hits it at least when we played but does miss it right on occasion.

Correct. My miss is high right, especially with the 3 wood. [overdraws]

I always get the coolest stuff haha. I changed hybrids too and putter.

No doubt. Adams has really stepped their game up. Need to get on those black nickels for the wedges as well. Ive seen the tour issue Tp line before, they are top-notch. I went to go pick one up at the show this year and one had a very noticeable rust or spot that the finish had just missed.

< Talk about disappointed.

well the reason I was curious is I went to a Demo Day Sat and the big 7 were all there. I was able to hit a plethura of drivers and shafts and with what was there OEM the R9 was the best driver for me, with the A4 the 2nd best. The R9 is a .350 tip into the "sleeve" so not too sure how well that would work for the R9
