RKris's "I'm laid up for a few days so its time to post a WITB" Bag

Recommended Posts

I'm normally too busy using the sticks to post one of these, but I find myself sidelined fo a few days and thought, "what the heck." This summer is the first year I got everything "set" after a few years of experimenting. I'm posting my "normal" bag below, but I've got some odd clubs I pull in and out depending on conditions/course that I'll list below. My home course is not overly long--6500 from tips--but it requires you have a good short game and work the ball both ways. The turf is firm and we have a lot of pine straw and waste bunkers.

Bag as I play it most days:

Driver: Ping g25, 9.5 degrees (clicked down to 9), Ping TFC-189 stiff shaft, paint fills in garnet/gold for a little FSU pride. Picked it up used last year and I'm sure it'll stay in place for another 2 or 3 years.

3 wood: Callaway Xr with the Project X LZ 6.0. This is a new one for me this summer. I hit Titleist fairway woods for a long time, but needed to tip the scale towards a little more distance vs. accuracy bc there was too close a gap between the utlilty club I was hitting and the Titleist 906 3 wood I had. So, I played a strong X2 hot 3 wood that fit my home course well, but could get a tad squirrley from the deck. Enter this Xr, which I hit 220ish and fills out some "go for it" shots on par 5's and a couple safe shots on par 4's.

3 iron: FRANKENIRON aka: Frank. A Cally x-14 pro 3 iron head + 2-iron length RBZ stock Matrix Ozik x-stiff shaft + the Aqua Ping NTS grip I love. Never thought I'd bag a driving iron, but I play some thin lies and this one is hot + relatively easy to hit. After buying it for windy days in the winter it knocked my hybrid out of the bag.

4-W: Ping S55 with KBS Tour shafts. Shafts are a R+ Love 'em. Relatively easy to hit, look great at address, and help me with knockdown shots (I hit the ball high natually). Garnet and gold paintfill.

Wedges:

50: Ping Glidewith WRX grind, CFS Wedge shaft (use it on full shots, 1/2, 3/4 shots and long runners).

54: Vokey SM5 with S grind and 10 degrees bounce, this is my fluffy/snarly lie club, 1/2-3/4 shots. It is my go-to chipping club.

60: Vokey SM4 with L grind and 4 degrees bounce. My home course has a lot of firm bunkers and thin turf/sandy rough--rarely hit it 100%. It is almost exclusivly for chipping, but I'll hit 60 yard shots with it too.

Putter:

Scotty Cameron California Monterey, 34 inches, 70 lie (I carry my hands low putting). This was a gift from my inlaws for getting promotion and tenure a few years back. It has pistelero grip and I put a 50g counterbalance weight under the grip.

Bag:

Ogio Hauler Team Bag. I am a History Professor at UNC-Pembroke and do some service work with the golf team. I bought this at a team fundraiser a few years back. I don't carry as much as I used to bc of neck issues, but I can carry this one easily and it fits on my Clicgear cart well too. I've got an FSU Team Effort caddy towel there too.

[Not pictured] A black and white Ping Moonlite--use this a lot when I walk nine with my 10 yo sone and carry a short bag.

Headcovers:

My driver cover is the school's team headcover the coach gave me as a "thank you" for helping out.

My 3 wood is a Stitch cover I got a few years back when I played #2--going to go back and replace it with a black one to fit the color sheme this summer.

Putter cover is one got at Royal Dornoch last summer on my first trip to Scotland, a trip my dad and I took together.

The other players:

Ping G25 @ 9degrees/TFC 189D stiff
Callaway XHot2 pro/13.5 degrees/Aldila TG stiff
Titleist 913H/19 degrees/Aldila TG stiff
Ping s55/4-W/KBS Tour R+ [ .5 long]
Glide 50 w. Wrx grind
Vokey SM5 54-10/S grind

The Other Clubs I work in:

Here are clubs I'll mix and match if I travel to play.

3 wood: this is the above mentioned X2 Hot pro strong 3 wood (13.5) with a Aldila Tour Green ATX 75-3.7-S shaft in the FSU headcover. Its a nice little anti-left club that works out well yardage wise and shot shape-wise on three or four holes at my home course. The Xr knocked it out as easier to hit and with good yardage--but I hate to give it up and might use it in the winter or in my Sunday short bag.

5 wood: 18.5 degree Titleist 906f4 5 wood with an OG ProLaunch Red that is R felx and tipped to stiffen a touch. In the Purdue headcover. This one I got for my Sunday short bag---I'll carry two wedges, putter, even irons, this 5 wood, and a driver. Also, I got it to learn how to shaft a club. It is a great club, just don't really have a place for it in my regular bag.

Hybrid: 19 degree Titleist 913H with a Aldila Tour Green ATX85-2.8-S shaft. In the Scotscraig headcover (another Scotland trip momento). Another anti-left club for me. I pull it out when I play courses with sticky rough that makes "Frank" hard to hit.

Extra lob wedge: a Cally forged 60 degree with a sh$%t ton of bounce. Picked it up for $10 and use it if I play my dad's course, which can get really soggy. I did some fugly paint fills on it.

#1 Backup putter: 38" Kombi Mid with a Winn long putter grip and 50g counterbalanced weight. Like it a lot, but have better touch around the hole with my Monterey. I pull this out sometimes for really slow greens because it feels like a war hammer. I did the paint fills.

#2 backup putter: this one is just for fun. I always wanted a BeCu Anser with sound slot bc my dad had one when I was a kid and I made my first birdie with his at 12 (after borrowing it without permission). I won my flight ina county tourney a few years back and had a gift certificate and thought, why not? Its so light, but I use it some in the fall and winter when greens around here get quick. The putter cover is one my kids and wife got me for my birthday awhile back. It's got an FSU spear on it and is from Fore. I'd use it more regulrly, but the magnets don't hold it on great and I don't want to lose it.

Yeah, I get that. Luckily I picked up a club this summer

And am playing well so I think I can hold out. Plus, we had to redo the kids' bags because they grew over the winter so that sated my club research and buying yen.

Very nice bag. I like the setup except for the "Free Shoes U" colors. LOL. I have an old Cally x-14 2 iron setting in my golf closet that I just might try tinkering with like yours, good idea on use of that club. Keep hitting straight.

Hey man, haters gonna hate! :taunt:

The x-14 was seriously a suprise for me. I thought I'd hit it only off and on it the winter, but that face is so dang hot. Ball just jumps off of it, the head shape is decent, and its got more forgiveness than one would think. For $15, it was a good buy. I tried reshafting it myself but it was waaaaaaaay spinny (I put a still Aldila NVS in it), so I took it to my club guy and he pointed out the iron head was heavier than the hybrid/fw heads the shaft was designed for. He had that stock RBZ shaft in x-stiff hanging around and threw it in and it worked like a charm. Since its a long shaft, I can choke down an inch or so for clean contact and still hit it about 200, but if I want I can choke up and bomb it.

Like the set up all in all. Great variety play what works. Good back ups too. Like the bag and head cover collections. Like the old slotted Anser too! When all else fails go back to the old Anser. Yep you are just up the road a little ways from me in Pembroke NC. Had a lot of friends back in the day from that area that used to come to Charlotte and gamble with us.

Oh yeah, it's a "Sandhills" bag for sure---the lob wedge is one I would only play around here. And yeah, you can find some good ole boys who travel with brown paper bags here for sure! I keep it a lot friendlier wager wise!
