Advice on shaft for Driving Iron.

Bringing this topic back to life as I'm starting to have some doubts with the shaft I stayed with(Fuji speeder 9.8x hybrid shaft). While I have VERY good days with it I'm also inconsistent in "finding my swing" with it most days. The overall balance just feels different from what I'm use to with a long iron. I don't know if it's maybe that the balance point and profile of a hybrid shaft is just different from iron shafts in use to or just simply the lighter overall shaft weight or what. I've never played hybrids or graphite iron shaft before so I'm only familiar with driver/fairway shafts and steel iron shafts.

Only think I know is that looking down I want to see and think "iron" but when I swing it just doesn't make me feel like I'm swinging something I'm accustomed to.

I'll echo a familiar line on wrx...I'm a driving iron addict. I've tried several different graphite shafts in driving irons - veylix copper mod 105X, recoil proto 125x and 110x to name a few. None of my graphite experiments have thus far worked out.

It is often issues with a unfamiliar balance point, severely lowered SW and loss of accuracy (which is the sole purpose of hitting a DI).

I've reverted back to same shaft as irons but I also saw success with going with a lighter steel shaft too (C-Taper S / hardstepped).

If you grew up playing and hitting long irons well, seems like the familiar shaft feel + new tech in these DI's is already plenty. I've chased the unicorn graphite shafted driving iron but have yet to find it.

That's beast numbers from the Fuji.

What do you feel is wrong? Have you had the club swing weighted? Perhaps before you go buying more shafts, adding some lead tape to adjust that number may help. Otherwise you may just do better with something like CTL or Modus 105.

Yes I have the swingweight where I want it at D3). It's difficult to explain exactly what is "wrong". It usually takes me a couple holes to really get into a groove with it but when I do it's VERY good. My problem is when I am in that groove with it my ball striking with my irons and my woods seem to suffer. Just because it feels balanced and weighted so much different than my woods and my irons.

I could go back to a normal steel iron shaft I'm familiar with but that would take away some of the characteristics that make this club so appealing. Such as being almost as long as my 4 wood and being able to get it out there without as much effort as I have to give to get it out here with heavy steel iron shaft and being as accurate as a mid iron.

The unicorn has to be out there somewhere! However I imagine it will be more than likely in a graphite iron shaft instead of graphite hybrid.

Does anyone have any shaft profile and stiffness characteristics between hybrid graphite and iron graphite or steel?

I'd look at the Diamana Thump X hybrid or iron shaft, or for less dosh, the Nunchuk hybrid or iron shafts - more likely the iron shaft.

Nunchuck could be a possibility.

Has anyone tried the nunchuck hybrid or iron shaft? Not sure which would best for a driving iron. My iron is a cobra utility (.370) tips so either would work. Nunchuck iron shaft are only $55 but the hybrid is $125. Wonder what performance differences there might be, if any.

In the last 12 months, I have had about 6 or 7 different driving irons.

Shafted, KBS CTaper, Ctaper lite, Hzrdus 85x, Ad DI 105x, Aldila NVS 105x, Recoil 110, Recoil 125.

I just reshafted my MP H4 2 iron with a VA Composites Raijin Hybrid shaft. That thing is hands down the best thing I could have done. Probably my favorite club in the bag at the moment. Just straight, launches with ease and is a low spin bomber.

They also have an iron shaft that is already .355. I opted for the hybrid shaft at .370 and sanded it down and through about 7 rounds and 4-5 range sessions, it's becoming my go to for needing a fairway. And it looks sick!

What's the weight? You say it's hands down the best so what were you looking for in a shaft specifically?

It's classed as 84g, but uncut spec on the site shows 77g but it doesn't feel like it at all. Feels heavier for sure

What I was looking for was something that was going to give me silky smooth feel, but not spin like a top. I am already a high spin player. So easy to hit off the deck or off the tee, but still being really low spin.

It just hits penetrating bullets for me. For reference, I am around 117 Driver swingspeed. Feel kind of reminds me of an Oban White, but spins lower.

The best thing for me is it really just seems to go straight. There isn't any forced manipulation to try to hit certain shots. I just pick a point, aim and fire and it just goes. I have the same shaft in my driver (74x which is 81g uncut) and I love it so much, it was a no brainer to try the Hybrid shaft in my 2 iron.

I definitely want something 100-115g weight range. Graphite. That I can get the stability and feel/balance of the heavier steel iron shafts in accustomed too but not have to completely go all out to get the distance I want out of it but will still hold up if I go all out, if that makes sense. For example I have played heavy steel shaft in it(px 7.0 and modus 120tx with inserts) and I like what I was seeing except for the harsh feel with the hollow cast head and the distance wasn't what I was wanting. I could get the distance out of it but I would really have to go after it.

I get it. 70x driver 80x in the 3 wood and 100x in my hybrid. I have Modus 130 in my irons and really prefer the heavier feel. I thought this shaft was going to feel too light, but gave it a try anyway. I was not disappointed.

I got really great results from the Hzrdus 85, but just didn't feel like it was heavy enough and felt more harsh. Tried the AD DI 105x and it was fine, but just didn't give me feeling of being comfortable. I don't know what it was, but just felt off. Couldn't ever put my finger on what I didn't like, just didn't care for it.

Eventually sold all the driving irons and went back to hybrids. Got an MP H4 with an Aldila NVS 105x and it was actually surprisingly very good. Can be had super cheap on the bay and even .355. I bought a Raijin for no other reason than boredom and wanted to experiment and it was just a lucky find I guess for me. Don't really know what I was expecting, but it checks every box for me.

I know the feeling of not being able to put your finger on what exactly it is you don't like about it! That's how I am with the speeder I have in it now.

Maybe try Steelfiber i95 irons shafts. I've personally never hit them, but have heard fantastic reviews. Low launching for a graphite shaft, smooth, and lightweight. Seem to fit what you are describing.

This is one I'll look into. Hoping someone has add experience with it and can provide some specific comparisons.

on a side note- your signature of irons and wedges are the exact same as what I'm interested in getting. Mp25-lz 6.5 but hardstepped and rtx 3.0. I play a 50, 55, 60 as well. Not sure if ill get them in the 50 and 55 but really want the 60* but in LG. Absolutely love the way the lg low bounce grind lays.

I have steelfiber i95 stiff in my RSi UDi #4 and absolutely love it. Very solid feel, decent height enough to hold a green yet not upshooting much into the wind. I do have the same shafts in my 5-PW RSI TP. Have a 3# RSi UDi on its way and may end up shafting that the same as it should be excellent and match the set :)

I played nunchuk Xi in my flihi's for a long time. Very steady, very accurate. Love that shat shaft for long clubs. Some claim it will raise the ball spin but I never experienced that.

Also played nunchuk hybrid long time in 910. This shaft feels much stronger. It works really well in a hybrid if you can handle it (low bullet) In an iron it never impressed me; too tough for my game.

Currently I play Mitsu Kuro Kage X. Much softer profile than NunChuk. At a 100gr it is far better than many others for a fair price. Also play UST Irod x. The irod is superb but expensive. It seems to be under the radar but I am very interested in the KBS hybrid composite.

In my flihi's I have shafted a KBS ctaper Lite s. Which performs very well too.

The way I felt it: yes.

Please be aware that nunchuck hi has a .370 tip and the xi I played had a tip of .355.

Gotcha. I'd be getting the .370 in the xi has my utility is .370 tip.

I'm sure it's been suggested, but use the same shaft you have in your irons, keeping the SW and length progression. Once you get the fit right, center face contact and directional control will improve and that thought that you need something with "better feel", etc will be an after thought.

I'm not looking for the same shaft I use in my irons for many reasons.

Here's my take... In a driving/utility iron, I've played Recoil 110, Steelfiber i95/i110, RIP Alpha 105, PX Blue HB6, plus in hybrids Matrix Infra, Veylix Rome 988, UST Elements Fire 100, VTS Black 100HXX (REBAR), Tour Green 105, Tour Blue 105, and some others I'm sure I've forgotten... The hardest part for me is to find a good shaft that has a good balance point. More often, a hybrid shaft has too high of a balance point or the head is too light for my taste and I end up in D0 or lighter territory. Of all the shafts I've played, the one that works best for me is the PX HB6 in a UDI. I get a decent swing weight at iron length while also keeping a good flat flight and smooth feel. AND, they are under $40 on ebay. If PX 7.0 is too weak for you, they also make a 7.5 version at 100g. After the PX, the Steelfiber i110 is it - stable, good balance point (actual sw ended up higher for me) and mid-low flight. I hated the RIP alpha. It had absolutely no feel despite the good performance. The hM3 you were looking at is the successor to the Matrix Infra and if it's anything like the other M3 line, it's going to feel really stiff to flex but give good performance. Lastly, if you can find one, and they are out there somewhere, get a Miyazaki C.Kua 105x or Fujikura 904HB. Doesn't get any better than those when it comes to smoothness and performance.

Can totally relate on buying several graphite shafts for my driving iron collection in recent years. Balance point always is off and I haven't found one that I've liked let alone loved. The minor gains in height/distance were negated by two way misses because the club felt funky each time.

I think those who grew up successfully hitting heavy X steel long irons, its a tougher transition to find something in graphite with similar feel. I dunno

Since then I've temporarily quit my graphite driving iron binge experiments and will stick to steel. I think a PX LZ 6.5 has potential in a driving iron.

I haven't hit the LZ. If the HB6 didn't work, I had a DG AMT X100 on deck. Also wanted to try the Nunchuck Xi and GDI DI-95.

Very informative, thanks! It's definitely been a journey trying to find a graphite shaft(only tried hybrid so far) that has the balance and weight I'm comfortable with. It's been an annoying trial and error with the cobra because I have to pull out the adapter each time just to try it as I've been unable to find any extra utility adapters.
