Taylormade P790 Irons

If these are hollow and cast like the T-MB then I am not interested.

But, if there is some filling inside that reduces vibration then I am IF they are low offset and bounce like the PXG 0311X irons, which are fantastic feeling and forgiving.

Will be interested in 6-pw since PXG X is only available thru the 5.

Ok, ok. I did get a chance to hit 'em, 4 and 8. Lot of guys are going to love these as long iron replacements/driving irons. People that like cf16s type irons are gonna want to give these a try in the full set as well ;)

 

so if they are doing a full set of irons, are the pictures of the UDIs different to these? Did the 4 say UDI? The pics TM put out clearly say UDI but I can't image they have that on an 8 iron lol

From what I was told, the full set will be released in the fall with the highest iron being a 3 (they don't say udi), the udi variants are functionally identical but they have the udi branding and will come later, available in lower lofts (1, 2)

These 790's looks sweet. Could easily see them going in a lot of bags as the long irons, must like the current UDI's/T-MB's. Will be interesting to see all the different combo set that will be out there with the different models. Hopefully they'll have the same lofts throughout the 730-750-770-790's so you can easily do this unlike how Titleist's are typically all different.

It has been a long, long time since I've had any interest in a Taylormade iron. But they really knocked it out of the park with the 700 series. I look forward to seeing the full set of these.

I'm just repeating what I heard from the rep. He didn't mention a one iron though, idk why I said that

Went to a demo day today and hit several irons. TM M2 I didn't like, M1 wasn't much better. Then the rep pulls out a 790 7 iron and hands it to me. One swing and i am in love! Rep says they will retail in the $1200 range, quite a bit over my budget but wow I really want a set of these irons

I think we are starting to actually feel the price increases in the equipment industry and they are starting to set the new baseline. Kind of like when drivers went from $400 to $500 OTR. I'm sure it is just me, but I've really noticed the pricing changes over the last few years for irons as a category from almost every manufacturer. That's life though!

Now...what metal are they forged out of?

"Forged" is a highly overused term these days compared to the days of blade irons, so caution must be used when using that term.

But if the hosel is soft forged metal then that is a big plus along with the backside.

They're a little more chunky than I'd normally play, but they're not super thick. Similar to apex/z565 iirc

 

Edit: maybe a little slimmer than the apex, less offset too, even in the longer irons

Now...what metal are they forged out of?

I suspect that the front face/sole will be a cast since the sole slot requires a very strong hard metal to flex/reflex continually. The back/hosel will be welded onto the front piece......so partially "forged".

Even the PXG 0311X made from very soft 8620 carbon steel has an ultra thin face welded onto the body.
