So I guess the only question now is if and when we might see the P-790 2-iron as a Retail offering? We have seen the 2-iron in pics so we know for sure it is out there, (see pic below), but I am now wondering if it will be a 'Tour issue only' club and therefore not made available for Retail...Really hope to see it at Retail! :swoon:

Anyone have more info on the (missing) P790 2-iron?.. :dntknw:

the 790s are very interesting, plus a whole lot better looking cosmetically than the screw collection PXG, awful visual at address long irons AP3, Callaway Epic Pros ugly cavity. Like they mentioned the COR (dead feeling sorry I mean "soft") killing TPE. Love it when all the PXG cultists claim everyone is copying their design (TM had foam filled decades before PXG was even thought about, PXG looks strangely like the S55s...how did that happen, advertise as a forging when only the body is forged...the face is formed, not forged, guess would be ok if you hit the ball with they back of the club, and then lastly and most impressive priced these clubs higher than any real premium forging). Looking forward to trying these as the AP3 (demo only), PXG (yes owned a set so not a picture critic..brother or cousin have them now with no feedback), Callaway Epic Pros look almost as bad as PXG in the bag..i200 (sad attempt at thin face technology) all lack anything that could be mistaken for feel, although all have 1-2 club advantage over regular clubs due to jacked up lofts. Will try the Mizuno MMC, but Mizunos no scrap liberal use of lead weights has always been a deal breaker.

The 790s have a reasonable price even with graphite, where the others (save ping) are a joke.

Love the look and the concept.

Serious question--wouldn't the foam "wear out" or lose it's physical spring after time or weather or lots of strikes? The foam shown in the Shields review looked kind of delicate almost.

Not a TM fan by any means, and actually dislike them for several reasons, but have to admit, those look fantastic. Would love to check those out. Wish the gapping was a little closer in the shorter irons, though. Most people don't need distance in their short irons, at least for those looking at this, one would think.

It certainly is going to be an interesting Fall this year. So much new technology coming out. Pro I know said his shop stopped carrying TM due to how many times they change product. Shop actually loses money trying to sell the stuff where in 6 mos its outdated. You buy these irons in September and then by March they have a new model of the same club. He said he'll let the Golf Galaxy's of the world sell TM. I'd try these clubs out but probably stay true to Titleist or Mizuno.

For now, consider a 'mix and match' of P-790's with the 'cosmetically closer' P-730 blades...(The chrome insert strip in the P790 cavity pays homage to the chrome finish on the 730's)..

To my eye, the 750/770 irons actually have very different cosmetics then the 730/790 irons. Though supposedly part of the same P-Family, these and look like an entirely different TM design scheme when compared to the newer 730/790 clubs.

However, who knows, there could even be a 'more closely matching' P-760 or 780 (non-hollow) CB still to come... :o...(Keep in mind, this is Taylormade we're talking about here)...Something in-between the 730 and 790 within that design scheme is certainly not out of the question and very desirable from a combo set perspective...

Unless the P-790 2-iron is actually 17*, (as I am expecting), rather than the more typical 18* loft..

At 17* it would be a true driving iron, and well-deserving of the UDI stamp that has been seen on the toe of Tour Player P-790 2-irons. (You may even think of it as a 1-and-a-half iron). I also suspect that it will offer a different stock shaft than the P-790 iron set. Now that actually makes very good sense to me, in fact, so much so, that my 'gut' is now telling me the 2-iron UDI will be offered to Retail due to the popularity of the original UDI #1 (16*) and #2 (18*) clubs. (Of course, with the P-790 2-iron at 17* there really is no need for another UDI 16* 1-iron, so perhaps just the single 17* loft will be offered this time around).. :) .

Seems TM has decided to make the UDI a separate announcement from the P-790 irons...(maybe it will make its debut around Christmas time). I think I might even be willing to bet on that!...

Went to a demo day today and hit several irons. TM M2 I didn't like, M1 wasn't much better. Then the rep pulls out a 790 7 iron and hands it to me. One swing and i am in love! Rep says they will retail in the $1200 range, quite a bit over my budget but wow I really want a set of these irons

Did you hit the 770? If so, can you compare 770 to 790?

People complaining or constantly bringing up the lofts clearly don't understand that these irons launch high.

They're strong lofted to counteract this.

It's not that hard to grasp.

It's a Players-Distance Iron. The 7 will launch as high as a 7 but likely go as far as your 6. It's called product development.

And they aren't even that strong lofted...

Before you've had to typically choose if you wanted a Players Iron (thin top line, sleek design, punishing on mis-hits, traditional lofts) or if you wanted a forgiving distance iron (thick top line, bulky, cumbersome, very forgiving, strong lofts). These appear (with limited reviews so far) to be all of the pros of each category, with little to no cons that I can see.

They're essentially PXG 0311's (without the gawdy screws) at a price point we can all get behind - what isn't to love about that?

Meh, the discussion has gotten stale from both sides. At this point, I just go with the flow. When I see a 45* or 43* pw, I see a 50* or 48* wedge as the next club and remember all the great shots I've hit with both of those lofts. If they go through your preferred window, all is good.

I can't wait to give the 3 iron a try and possibly a 2 UDI. I like what TM has done with their iron setup and love the look of the 790 as well as the 730s. I'm glad I already have my 750s so I don't try those blades. I've learned to love not working hard to hit blades like the p730s. I kind of like that the 3 UDI is 19 so it acts like a 2 iron with the possiblity of having a 17* 2 UDI. TM good job. Love what you've done from the p790 through p730s.

My thoughts exactly. They need to release the new UDI 2-iron.

I'm still waiting for the 46/48 degree milled grind wedges as well.

I've watched three reviews on YouTube with Trackman data and all three gents had an unusually low peak height with these irons. Rick Shiels hit one anomaly with the 4 iron that went high but he called it a misread. Maybe they didn't need to make these irons strong lofted since they're not flying as high.
