Taylormade Project A

What do people think of these balls? The Walmarts (blech) around here carry them for $30/dz. Seems like a good deal. Right now, I like the DT Trusoft. But for only $8 more per dozen, I'm thinking of checking these out if they're better.

Anyone know what SS they target? How soft feeling are they? What would they compare to in the Titleist line? Would you put them above the NXT Tour (or Tour S), which are about the same price?

The Walmart version is probably an older model. Most Walmart premium balls are prior gens they can no longer send to the big golf stores.

If you want a great cheap tour ball, Dicks has Maxfli U/6 Soft for 2 for $35. if you have a coupon even better. 24 balls vs 12 and just as good if not better.

Select your ball from the green backward, there is a difference in today's Urethane vs Surlyn covered balls, they can't perform the same around the green.

What puts it so low?

For me, I thought it had the most driver side spin. And just generally didn't like the feel as much as the others. I generally haven't gotten along with any TM balls though so.

I find that the 2016 version had far less driver spin than the original, and the feel was much improved.

I'd still pick the Q-Star Tour over it, however I still have a few A's in my bag that I'll grab if I lose one in the woods or the drink and I always say "oh yeah, I forgot this was decent" after a few shots.

At $30/dozen, there's no value for me (having played the ball and the competition). At sub-$25, I might consider it.

Not saying it is a bad ball in any way, the 4 I ranked are my top 4 at this price point.

Walmart has the old version. No wonder the price point.

Old version is not a bad ball. Higher ball flight and higher spin than the newer one in my experience. I found it actually worked better for my game.

I hated the old version off the tee with my driver and irons. It felt so hard. But that was just me. I like the soft golf balls. No question about the spin. The ball really spins back on full wedge shot. Around the green spin is also amazing.

I also used to play the DT Tru Soft and the Nxt Tour S. The spin on the Project A does not compare these two imo based on my observations. The two feels softer though. I never played the new Project A, so I am referring to the older version.

Anybody compared distance of Project A vs TP5 or TP5X ?

I found a TP5 in the rough and used it till it was all scuffed. Based on my short time playing the TP5, it was way better than the older version Project A imo. Felt better for me off all the clubs. I am not sure if I was just imagining things but it was straighter as well. It was so good for me I wanted to buy a box but the price stopped me.

I have no experience with the new version of the Project A though.

Anybody compared distance of Project A vs TP5 or TP5X ?

Interesting question. I wasn't a huge fan of the Project a until I, after a long hiatus of playing the TP5x and MTB for a while, teed up a Project a earlier this week and really, really enjoyed playing it. Hit the longest drive of my life and was very pleased with it off the irons. Go figure. I'm thinking I was playing the newer version I hear mentioned here. (assuming there's a difference). But...I'll be picking up more of these - they are my son's favorite ball to compete with anyway. In terms of "distance" between this and the TPs? I have found the TP5x to offer consistent long driver distance.

I really like(ed) the Project A, especially the yellow version.

But I did notice this year that everytime I played one of these it felt like it wasn't going anywhere. Seemed like well struck drives werent finishing anywhere near where I expected them to be (home course, lots of rounds, have a pretty good idea where shots should end up).

I didn't notice this on the previous version. So despite really liking the feel, I probably won't play it anymore.

I committed to Project A's for the 2017 season and was happy. Old version had too much driver spin for me (ss 90), but love the new version. Get great feel on putts and chips. Softer feel than ProV for me, not quite as much bite.

Haven't played the TP5, but now you guys have me curious.

Are the yellows the old or new version? I have them. Not worth 35. But, a good 25 ball with a DSG coupon.

Vice pro plus is a much better ball at a better price.
