Scotty Cameron Select Newport (2012) — Custom Length?

Ducky

Recommended Posts

Howdy everyone,

I'm interested in purchasing a Scotty Cameron Select Newport (2012) but I require it in a custom length (37"). Due to this, I have some concerns (which I haven't been able to find the answers to by using Google and visiting the official Scotty Cameron website).

Are the following lengths/weights correct?

33" (320g head weight, 40g weight inserts, 360g total head weight)

34" (320g head weight, 30g weight inserts, 350g total head weight)

35" (320g head weight, 20g weight inserts, 340g total head weight)

If so, that means that for each additional 1" in length, 10g less total head weight is required. Therefore — ideally — a length of 37" would require a 320g total head weight.

However, since the head weight is 320g without weight inserts, I'm guessing the lowest achievable total head weight is 330g (320g height weight, 10g weight inserts).

If all of the above is correct, which would be the best way of achieving a 37" length with 330g total head weight?

1) Place a custom order (which I'm assuming would attract an additional cost on top of the $470 AUD RRP)?

2) Purchase a 35" length with 340g total height weight, replace the 20g weight inserts with 10g weight inserts, and install a 2" shaft extension (or re-shaft)?

As you'll note, I'm quite confused about the whole process. Hopefully, the Scotty Cameron experts here at GolfWRX can help me out. Thanks!

define "best". if cheapest, that would be for someone who knows AUS prices to determine. or your level of OCDness, in having to have the work done by scshop. in the end, it would be basically the same putter, except for small stuff like authentic sc weights and shaft or extended shaft, custom band or one that does not match actual length, etc. but before going thru all that, are you certain that weight (and length) will work for you?

ok....

the head weight is not set it stone. this is not something that is required at all. the way a putter feels or plays is up to you, not anyone else. just because scotty cameron says it's supposed to be a certain weight doesn't mean you have to do that.

note, however, the older model camerons had different weights. the new pistolero grip is so heavy that cameron felt he had to make the head weights heavier to match....he also could be giving in to the marketing pressure, as the current trend is for heavier putter heads. if you really want to go down to 320, you can get one of the old select (2010) models, which had a lower stock weight (without the weight inserts) than the new 2012 select models. or you could just get any OTR cameron putter from before the interchangeable weight lineup. as long as they don't say anything on them about the weight, those are 330g or below (one gun blue newport i had spec'd out at 322g).

if you absolutely must follow scotty cameron and get a new cameron, i would contact scotty's shop and see what they can do, if anything. if they can't do anyhting, you might contact one of the other people on here who do mods, like lamont or slighter, to see what they suggest.

I appreciate the responses, thanks!

I contacted the Scotty Cameron custom shop via email and received this response:
We do not sell the putters direct from the Custom Shop. We do additional work on putters shipped into us. The putters are sold through Titleist dealers. The longest Titleist can produce a putters is 35.5 inches. You would need to purchase the standard putter, and then ship it into the Custom Shop to be re-shafted. The standard 35 inch putter with 10 gram weight has a 350 gram headweight. The head weight would be the same at 37 inches, it would just feel heavier. We would recommend getting the lighter 2x5 gram weights installed if you ship it in as well.
That doesn't seem like a very good solution (at least from a cost and time perspective), in my opinion. I guess the best approach is going to be purchasing an off-the-rack putter and re-shaft it myself (or alternatively, purchase another brand of putter which better accommodates its customers).

What he said^

And if you're truly set on Cameron, I believe the Mil-Spec's were offered in a 36", 320g head if you really want 320. With the trend towards heavier putter heads, you should be able to find a really nice looking one for a reasonable price.

Well, I went ahead and purchased a Scotty Cameron Select Newport (2012) in 35.5". However, in hindsight I regret doing so, as I suspect that 35.5" will not be long enough and after contacting the Scotty Cameron custom shop (again) with the following question...
Sending the putter to the Custom Shop from Australia for re-shafting would be quite expensive due to postage. I have club assembly experience, so I feel comfortable re-shafting the putter myself, I just need to know what type of shaft the Scotty Cameron Select Newport (2012) uses. Is it simply a stepless .355 taper tip shaft? Any tip trimming?
I received the following answer...
Unfortunately the tip size is information that is not available to us. It is proprietary information as the shafts are made by True Temper specifically for Scotty Cameron, and are not available for individual sale. The putter can be shipped into us for a re-shaft.
Seriously? They can't even measure the tip size on one of the shafts? Clearly, it's not satisfactory that I have spent $340 on one of their putters, I also need to be fleeced on a re-shaft.

Do any GolfWRX members know which shaft would be a satisfactory replacement (even if it's not the exact same shaft that the Scotty Cameron custom shop use)? Thanks in advance.

Why didn't you do the research prior to the purchase? They do not like other people working on their putters, right or wrong that's just how it is... I'm just happy they will allow custom lengths now not in 1" increments. I've sold a lot of PING putters this year because of their attitude towards custom stuff, it sucks I agree. The shaft is just a regular putter shaft though.

i beleive if you order it through the dealer in your country you can request a custom weight at a minimal charge if any at all... they do this all the time and it gets a circle H sticker for heavy... adjust the weights from Titleist and they ship out to you or the shop you buy it at.. then have the shop remove the grip extend the shaft 2 inches and put the grip back on... that should make the weight where you want it and the length and should cost much more.. but i am not sure if that applies outside of the US.

Sorry, that doesn't work.. you need to have the weight reduced as it gets longer.. and from what i know 5g weights are the lowest weights...

The 2012 heads weigh 330 grams without weights, so you are 10 grams light in your list.

Well, I did do my research and knew I would have to re-shaft the putter. However, I didn't realise that the Scotty Cameron custom shop would be so secretive about — what I considered to be — a minor issue. I understand why they wouldn't want other businesses (or people) working on their putters, but I'd hoped they would be a bit more considerate of their customers who require a putter with a longer length than 35.5" (considering this is the maximum length through Titleist but isn't an issue through other companies such as Ping). Regardless, I have ordered a True Temper stepless taper tip .355 putter shaft. Thank you for the suggestion.

I realise this. I didn't bother to update the original post with the correct head weights, as it was mentioned in post #4 (where I quote the reply from the Scotty Cameron custom shop).

Copy that; I can't see what is quoted in Post 4 because the font looks about size 2 on my computer screen.
