I believe someone up above provided the USGA web site link for the Jr. Am.

How it works....There's a bunch of sites across the U.S. where 2-day (2 rounds) qualifying tournaments are held. You have to have a registered USGA handicap of 6.4 or less. The medalist (or is it the top 2?) from each qualifier gets to go to the Jr. Am. (if they have one in every state and take the top 2, that makes it about a 100, sounds about right). I think in case he can't go, they take the next lowest scorer, etc. At the Jr. Am main event, I believe they have 36 holes of stroke play from which they make a 'cut'...those making the cut get into the Match play bracket, which I think are 64 players. There's also a number of players from prior year(s) that are exempt from qualifying. I guess they fit the exempt guys in on the stroke play side.

Last Year's Jr. Am => TOP RETURNING PLAYERS – Quarterfinalists from 2007 are fully exempt from having to qualify for the 2008 championship as well as anyone who has advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur or qualified for a U.S. Open, provided they still meet the age restrictions, etc. Those exempt and entered (3) are Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, N.C.; Anthony Paolucci of Dallas, Texas; and Cory Whitsett of Houston, Texas. McGowan not only was a quarterfinalist but also qualified for match play at the 2006 U.S. Amateur.

http://www.usjunioram.org/news/fact-sheet.html

THE 2008 SCHEDULE – Following 36 holes of stroke play (July 21-22), the field will be trimmed to the lowest 64 scorers, who will advance to match play. From there, the schedule is as follows:

  • July 23 (Wednesday) – First round, match play
  • July 24 (Thursday) – Second and third rounds, match play
  • July 25 (Friday) – Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, match play
  • July 26 (Saturday) – Final round, match play (36 holes)

How does the whole qualifying system work for the Junior Am?

I am doing it this year. This is how it works:

You play 36 holes on the set qualifying day.

A certain number of people go based on how many are qualifying.

Then there is a 2 day (18 holes each day) qualifier for match play at the US Junior Am. site.

So basically the local qualifiers are qualifiers for the qualifier lol. If that makes sense.

so the season just officially started in oregon, so right now i technically don't have a handicap due to the fact i haven't played 10 rounds of 18 yet, but my handicap was 0.9 at the end of the season last year, so if i don't have 10 scores in by the time i need to apply, will it use my handicap from last year, or do i need to play 10 rounds?

thanks

Your handicap doesn't continue over?

well, at first it didn't because last year they put my first name as my last name, so when they fixed my name this year, my scores didn't carry over immediately, but today, it was back.
