Titleist's new "AVX" golf balls, with premium urethane covers

Recommended Posts

i think it is interesting that soo many people are telling titleist that their pricing is so far off. yes there are a ton of decent options out there. i have not played a prov that i didnt find on the course in years because of price. but you know what. i find a lot of provs. so people are buying them. Until they stop the price will stay where it is at.

Again, i dont buy provs, they are just too expensive. but, i tell you what. It really is the best ball. there are others that are close but they are not as good (in my opinion) and i think that is just a fact that Titleist knows so they dont need to adjust to lesser competition. i bought some vice pro plus, not as good. Snell balls, not as good. etc etc etc.

All of these other balls are close. but they all lack in one area or another. they are typically not as fast off the driver and lose spin around the greens. off the driver it is not enough to make a difference but when you get to the half swing wedge shot that you want to sit. they just dont as well.

i wish that i could play the prov1x but i just cant, or wont buy them at the price point they set. so, i settle for something else. Generally i am ok with that but every time i find a prov1x that is in really good condition i always think. man, this is a great ball.

one last thing is that i really like colored balls as i can track them better.

Titleist is not the best ball anymore. Haven't been for a few years. They make a great ball but so does Srixon, Taylormade, and Callaway. Sorry but Titleist isn't the best anymore and sales reflect that.

You may be right, i am not going to argue with you on that because i honestly dont know sales numbers. I have played every ball out there. and i for one can say the TPX ball is not as good from my position. i play the Cally ball and really like it. it is close enough..

The only best ball is the one that fits your game. It's no different in clubs. There's no "best" set of irons for golfers. All of the top companies make good stuff nowadays so it comes down to aesthetics and performance for your specific swing. MGS did a great interview with Dean Snell you should check it out. He breaks it down better then anyone I've ever heard.

The biggest mistake these equipment manufacturers made after the Pro V1 was released was that they tried to make a ball that was equal to the Pro V1 and market it that way. That’s why so many manufacturers just burnt through names of balls hoping one would get some traction. No one started taking any market share from Titleist until they started producing balls and MARKETING them as a better ball than the Pro V1.

This is coming straight from the mouth of a major oem golf ball technician.

I keep hearing folks complain about the price, and yes I wish they were cheaper. But there are weekend players that pay for and play ProV every weekend, myself included. Why wouldn't they pay for and play a Titleist tour quality ball that better suits their game. That's why it's the same price point, and that's why if people like them they will sell just like the Prov does. They aren't the #1 ball by a large margin for no reason.

The reason they're #1 is largely down to marketing and advertising. Titleist spend far and away the most money on ball advertising and it's not even close.

As for paying for and playing a Pro V1 every weekend, that's up to you. A lot of club players want the prestige of playing the Pro V. However savvy golfers know there are far better / better value options available at all price points that perform equally well, if not better, than any Titleist product.

This is a little bit of a desperation move by Titleist as their Q2 numbers weren't good. I'm guessing this year overall won't be a good year for them...not that it is great for many parts of the golf market. Other than loyal Titleist fans, I don't see this doing that well. I think they only market they have for this golf ball is their own market. I don't see them grabbing the market that buys TM, Callaway, Snell, Srixon, Bridgestone, etc. golf balls.

This is typical Titleist though, trying to get people to pay more for a product that is no better then anything else out there.

Maybe they spend alot of money on marketing because they have a lot of money and they make a lot of money selling golf balls. The other brands aren't interested in selling product. That has to be the reason. Nothing else. Here's a novel idea. Perhaps the reason why people buy them is because they work for them.

its a ksig with titleist branding

Mystery solved Sherlock!

I've played the ksig, guess there's no need to try the avx! Z-Star for the win!

Not sure if this has been mentioned:

When Bridgestone released the B330RX (S); it pretty much eliminated the Mid-Market Price of the NXT Tour (S) ... my take is that Titleist will be discontinuing the NXT Tour (S) brand; since it was suppose to be a Pro-V1 Light. This new AVX is just an 'ametuer' version of the Pro-V1 with some improvements / differences.

Basically to compete with the B330 RX(S) - but with a higher price tag - as Titleist is known to do

They are trying to make a "go straight" version of the ProV1. Soft and good around the greens, but built for length and I bet it has a much higher MOI than the V1.

It will probably be a much better ball for 95% of us than the ProV1, but given the identical price, and availability of other similar balls (E5 for example) I wonder if it will stick at all.

I won't buy it simply because it costs more than the Chrome Soft, and I don't see how it could possibly do any more.

is this Titleists response to the Volvic XT ball?

No... that isn't urethane. This may be extremely similar, but with a higher price and a urethane cover.

Correct, but it is similar enough in concept to make me think of it. I am not sure how well this will fair. It does not really interest me that much.

Yeah... at 39.99 I'd consider giving it a go. At 29-35 it could be my new ball... I have been saying I'd love a urethane supersoft... I don't need spin on irons that I get with chrome soft. I hit it so high I can stop anything on the green with a scoring club.

I want some bite 50 in. This looks like the ball id design for my game... except the price.

I wonder what the compression is for this ball. Is it in the 100 range? or is it more similar to the Taylormade (a) ball??

Year old stock, clearanced at years end is the best buy in golf. Almost all of our guys buy their years worth of balls over winter when shops want to clear the old stock. $50 balls for $25 a dozen. You can't beat it.

I'm pretty sure it will sale once you hit the AVX. It's the best ball I have ever hit. It is very straight and very long. I work for Titleist. I got my hands a couple balls to test.

Sounds like a Game Changer.

I'm betting it will not be the same price as the Pro V1, if it comes to retail. If I'm wrong, I don't see why anyone would buy it unless it's a ProV1 replacement.

Just read through the entire thread, and it seems like people are getting unnecessarily hung up on the price point.

Remember — this is just a trail run. Price points can change (and most likely will). They can recover some $$$ on AVX R&D by selling at ProV1/x prices because they know people will want to try the new product.

Why would it make sense for Titleist want to transfer ProV1/x sales to AVX by keeping at the same price point? Very unlikely they would want to compete with themselves. This is just a trial roll-out price of a new product. Nothing more.

Personally, I hate the AVX name, but I think it's a fantastic play at the $39.99 price point. At $39.99, they aren't competing with themselves (assuming they ditch the NXT, which is the worst ball in the history of mankind), and can pull direct market share from CS/x and ZStar/x. It's win/win from my perspective. They can make a claim to ball fitting, and grab some middle-market share.

It will be interesting to see how long they last if Titleist keeps them at this price point if they release them. IMO they will have to bring some significant benefit for playing them to your golf game for consumers to purchase them when there are other good low compression golf balls on the market at a lower cost. People may buy a few dozen to try them out, but if the cost/benefit isn't there people won't continue to buy them. Unless Titleist is aiming at a small niche market I just don't think these will last long term at the price point they are looking at.

3 piece urethane ball for the same price as a Pro V... that doesn't make any sense. Mine as well just replace the dimple pattern on the ProV and call it the ProV17

Exactly. Makes little sense if this ball is at the same price point as the ProV1.

If the price is for the trial, and they are judged demand on that subset... I wonder it it makes it to mass distribution and the price drop that (should) come with that.

People are acting like everyone who would want this ball is already paying for ProV1s. The cost is no issue, but I don't play ProV1 on principle alone... they aren't worth it to me. There has always been an option on the market that is as good (no different to me at least) for about 10 bucks less per box. This year that ball is the Z-Star and Chrome Soft. In the past it was RZN Black, Maxfli U/4, and the FG Tour X.

I love the idea of a "straighter, longer, softer" type ball, but with urethane. Like Volvik XT, or a Callaway Supersoft, but with hop and stop from inside 50 yards. If it comes in below 40 bucks a dozen my hang-up would be gone.

Mine too. I think that is the competition for the AVX.

I play either a ProV1X or a 330RX. Looks like I'm a candidate for the new ball. Fortunately I usually get more than one round out of a golf ball, so I don't mind spending $$ for a better ball.

Both of you guys have no logic behind your opinions. Since when is the dimple pattern the only technology differentiating one ball from another? And furthermore, why does the fact that they are meant for different golfers dictate price points? Creating separation between swing speeds and core compression towards a goal of performance for a specific target demographic is no different than selling the existing ProV1 and ProV1x at the same price? They're different balls.

I'm not defending Titleist specifically but someone needs to defend common sense here because for some reason any Titleist news seems to bring the most absurd, emotional and irrational statements out of everyone on this site. Bridgestone has been doing exactly this for 10+ years but all of the sudden it's the most ridiculous idea you've ever heard of?? Come on.

I assume this is their play to maybe try and market themselves as "best soft urethane ball that still spins like a ProV", but with more distance. Problem is that the Chrome Soft and B330RXS are already insanely soft... and already spin as much as a ProV. Not to mention the ball would still need to conform to the rules of golf and much like driver heads, balls are already pretty much maxed out as far as distance goes.

Basically just trying to grab some market share in the soft, yet spinny ball category and spin it off like it's the next best thing in golf.

RXS spins as much as a ProV1? Do you know this? I'm genuinely curious. I played both of these balls this year and thought the ProV1 had more spin. B330S to me seems to spin about as good as a ProV1.

Apologies for the off topic post :-)
