New SM7's

I'm definitely in the camp who wants a raw option, but I don't see much of an issue with not having one available at retail as long as there is a finish such as the black that's so easy to strip. I've done it twice now on two separate sets of wedges, a set of Mack Daddy's and a set of Vokey's, and it couldn't be much simpler. I'm no handyman either, believe me, so if I can do it anyone can.

It’s still not raw and will not rust. I have a 60° raw Vokey and a 56 and 52 that were black but I stripped with CLR. And while they looked the same for a little bit, the 60° has rusted considerably while the other two have not over the last four months.

That's not true. They're all made from cast 8620 carbon steel. Once you strip the finish, they're just as raw as ones sold without a finish to begin with.

What makes them more or less susceptible to rust is the way the surface was prepped. When folks strip the black oxide, most are doing it in a way that leaves the wedges with a relatively smooth surface treatment which makes it harder for them to start rusting. If you hit the wedge with some sandpaper afterwards to give it the same satin finish as the real raw heads, they'll rust the same.

Good to know. I’m going to sandpaper the sh!t out of them today. Thanks!

Well the sm6 black is a QPQ process not black oxide, and it's a different animal to strip. QPQ gets into the metal and oxide is just surface.

I'm shocked at what some golfers will spend money on...$250 per wedge...gheesh?!

They can be had for much less. I just got 3 SM6 Raw for $175 a piece. Is it more than standard? Yes, but I don't have mess with stripping them.

Tell me why guys strip them? Look, feel, spin? Do they wear better groove wise and can they be reconditioned...err...new grooves? Do you practice with "range" set?

Living in California where it's sunny 90% of the year, it literally is just the glare from the chrome finish. Seriously blinding. And as much as I love the black finish, it never lasts very long and is pretty ugly after a few months.

Wow, you fellas are demanding...I, for one, have been extremely happy with the SM6. I have a stock, tour chrome 54 and 60 in the M-grind. Both are the best wedges I've ever owned, especially the 60. The M grind is literally perfect for me. My only request is that they don't change much. I've previously had the M-grind SM5s, and before that, the M-grind SM4 TVDs (got them used).

What I want to see is more stock options in the lower-lofted wedges; the F-grind just doesn't work for me. I've had to play a Glide 50 for two years now because I won't pay a bunch of stupid money for a custom grind or a TVD kind of deal.

The timing is great, I got the SM5s and SM6s just as they were coming to retail and I'll be ready for SM7s in the Spring. I hope that Uncle Bob keeps me happy.

I'd just like a raw v and low bounce k grind available. Release upcharged raws on vokey.com and it's all stock grind/bounce options.

Could like this a 1000 times if possible. the low bounce K grind option.

I think what would REALLY be worth the extra dollars if on wedge works they give us the opportunity to TRULY customize a wedge. For instance, I play the K grind and when I am here or up in Jackson Hole or Castle Pines the low bounce option is great. Sand and rough are conducive to having a little less bounce on the club. Firm, tight lights all over the course...BUT...for the US Mid Am in Atlanta I know the rough going to be deep and the sand is going to be fluffier so I would like a K grind with a little more bounce NOT 12 deg. Thankfully found a friend that has a 2014 prototype 58 K grind with 10deg bounce which is perfect. So let us pick the amount of bounce we want. It's our money, let us experiment. let us fail or succeed. Don't assume we all fit into the same mold. o

A low bounce K would be perfect for me and Links in Scotland...

you are from Houston I see and I find M with 8 degrees bounce a little too little for there...

Raw?

Won't be the tour 'raw' finish that is available through Wedge Works, but rather more of an 'antique bronze' look, similar to the Cleveland RTX 3's. Supposed to wear much better (read: more evenly) than the current jet black models. Obviously, put them in white vinegar overnight and you get the tour 'raw' finish. :)

I agree, same as mine. Their finish is great, it has a nice patina to it over time!

Correct. I should’ve clarified that I meant general retail announcement and release vs. Tour seeding that will begin in Vegas.

I'm seeing a lot of love for the SM4s. I also haven't been as crazy about the newer models as I was for the 4s. But it will be interesting to see the changes made in the 7s and a raw finish would be a huge hit with the so-called "better" golfer. I personally would love it if they would give different shaft options for no uncharge like Mizuno does. Certainly would help the bank account...

The new SM7 will be released to the PGA Tour and debuted at the Shriners, beginning of November. I saw a loft/bounce chart from my sales rep, but no pictures. There is an addition of a "D" grind that looked to fit in just below the K... so no in order of effective bounce for the 58 & 60º they are L, M, S, "D", K. Three finishes like before, Tour Chrome, Jet Black (same raw finish like SM6), and a new grey finish that replaces the Steel Grey that looks VERY MUCH like a RAW finish but will not rust.

IMHO, there's a lot of players and GolfWRX's that want a pure raw finish for an abundance of reasons. #1 because the tour pros use them, #2 because some of use realized the glare benefit, #3 because we can't get them ;) #4 because some of us prefer the look. In all seriousness, if Titleist offered a pure raw finish to the masses, they would end up with mass inventory at the end of the life cycle because Titleist sells 99% of its wedges to the average consumer, not us. The consumer wants to use their clubs until they are forced to replace them and want their wear and appearance to never change from day 1.
