TP5 or ProV1?

It seems like our customers are buying more TaylorMade TP5 dozens than Titleist ProV1s. Is anybody else noticing the shift as well? Which ball do you prefer?

That's a tough call. They are both great balls. Overall I believe I'm edging towards the TP5.

Tp5x for me from the ProVx

TP5x..... I choose this ball over all the othe premium balls for one simple reason. I lose fewer of them. Distance, spin, feel off the putter - all are important to me... but I can't explain why I lose fewer of these and therefore shoot better scores. Before the scratch crowd judges, I am a 9 HC.

Been playing the Chrome Soft for 10 months now and, after seeing a cut in half lopsided Chrome Soft, recently began testing other balls. Got a sleeve of ProV1x, TP5x, Chrome Soft X. None of them seemed any better than the regular Chrome Soft.

 

About a month ago while in a PGATSS the TM rep was there late in the day and gave me a couple of sleeves of the TP5 so I began playing them.

 

Excellent ball. Flies very well, stops with a foot on the green off a well struck iron and chips and putts very consistently.

 

Not quite ready to commit but it's probably down to the TP5 and the Chrome Soft.

The 5x is excellent. I have gamed the ProV1 a couple times and didn't dig it much. The ProV1x might be a different story, I don't like paying in that upper range for a dozen, with my game.

I know TMAG categorizes the 5 and 5x to both have "highest" wedge spin, but does the 5 have more greenside spin?

I have played both the TP5/TP5X and I feel the most comfortable with the TP5. Seemed most like an improved version of the TPX from last year.

I don't have empirical data to support my findings, but my observation was that the TP5 spun a little more than the TP5x around the greens when I did extensive testing early in the spring. The difference wasn't much, but the little touch shots were easier to control. Ultimately, one of the reasons I chose the TP5 was that I preferred the softer feel on those kind of shots and off the putter.

I was a long time Prov1x user but switched over to the TP5 and haven't looked back...

Rick Shiels did a test between the 2017 ProV1x and TP5. From 100yd 56* out, the TP5 registered at 11,500rpms, and the ProV1x was at 10,000 rpms. I played a dozen TP5s and loved them. I found a 2017 Prov1 and played great with it, so I just bought a dozen of them to see how I really like them

TP5 Hands Down with no question. My only gripe about the TP5 is that the cover just seems to get scuffed too easily. I'm not hitting cart paths or rocks or anything of the sort. I am assuming my wedges are just scuffing the ball up but, after a round of 9 holes on a par 3 course, the ball should still be good and have plenty of life.

In terms of ProV1s, I think it's well documented that I'll never buy them, ever. However, I am not opposed to gaming one if I find it or am given a sleeve from and event. I don't care for the feel and didn't think that they beat TP5 in any category minus the dexterity of the cover.

I played the V1X until the 2017 version came out. Now I play the the TP5 exclusively. It is a great ball.

I tried the TP5X. It was a great ball performance wise, but the durability just wasn't there. As others have said, they tend to scuff easily. The OCD in me just can't be havin' that.

Played Pro V1x for the last 10 years or so..... switched this past spring/summer to TP5X. I'm not going back... I have 3 new boxes of 2015 Pro V1x's in my garage collecting dust. I need to get rid of them.

The TP5x is the first ball I've put into play in a really long time where I noticed an immediate improvement. Perhaps since the first Pro V1. That said, the TP5x is the best wind ball I've ever played. If playing into a "1 club" wind, I would say the TP5x is only 1/2 club. I kept airmailing greens with these when I first put them into play. I even had my lofts checked on my irons because they were going so far. However, a fitting showed I was still getting optimal spin. In super firm conditions, I might switch to a TP5 because I do feel that it spins a bit more on approach shots and around the greens.

 

As a side note, I've told 3-4 other people at my club to try the TP5 or TP5x and all have made the switch.

Agreed. I've tried both. I have to give the nod to the TP5. Even though I use a DT TruSoft, I have a BUNCH of TP5s. They are a remarkably consistent ball.

Tried the new 17 Pro v 1 and have played the TP5 quite a bit this year. They’re both great balls but I like the TP5 better overall. B

I prefer this year's TP5 over both Titleist models. In my area Srixon and Callaway have definitely hurt V1/TP sales on price alone. Chrome Soft £30...TP £40 and V1s £43....

I really think TP5 is the best ball I've played.

 

I do not really like TP5x - while it is longer, I feel like it's just not good for distance control with too many iron shots carrying too far.

No, they're not the same ball. They are much better than the Penta.

Asked our pro shop about this and they've turned over 3 orders of the TM TP5 / TP5X and haven't turned over the Titleist balls yet in the same time period.

Played as a single the other day and played two balls. Tested the 2017 pro v1x and TP5x side by side. I preferred the TP5x in almost all tests I put them through that day. Now I’m a Chrome Soft X user and I don’t believe I’ll switch from it, but my next test will be the CSX versus the TP5 and we’ll see how that goes and I’ll make my decision if I’ll be switching.
