Why a #9 Could Work For You...

The flow neck on my #9 helps me keep my weight forward, hands forward, and hands moving toward the target. Ie, no decelerating.

(Because if I don't, the result is not so good.)

Plus, it looks killer.

I always felt the same; when I have the flow neck I feel like I can keep the putter (or my hands as you say) very low which gives me a lot of confidence.

I bought a spider tour; I've been putting with a center shafted mallet for about two years. I definitely consider myself a feel player, I am thinking of going back to a number 9 as I feel very comfortable with one in my hand.

I'm a mechanical player outside of putting. With putting, it's see target, roll ball there. I also a have a CS mallet and I rotate between the two for fun. There is no appreciable benefit to either.

The #9 is more of a pull the head through the ball kind of stroke while the CS is more of a let the weight of the head drop into the ball kind of stroke. I know that's not super technical, but that's how it feels. I'm a big trackman fan, but never been on a SAM (sp?) putting lab to see what I'm actually doing.

Exactly. For me, feeling where the toe allows me to pull through the ball. FB putters almost make it feel like you are a small vertical arc...something that impacts my speed control.

Totally agree with this. I play my CS as if I'm playing Skeeball with my right (low) hand. Hence, vertical arc (pendulum) feel.

Lemme ask you this... when you play with the #9, do you ever feel like you're hitting a "draw" with it? Ie, I feel like I'm flatter with my stroke, and swinging out while closing the club head. It almost puts a different kind of roll on it if you will.

I have always thought that way, which is why the #9 style appeals to me visually. However, in practice, the "draw" stroke doesn't work because I have to consciously turn the club over, which is a weird feeling to me.

I'm curious if this style is still working well for you? I've been considering switching to this style but have read mixed reviews on it.

Still in the bag! I have never putted better, either. My speed control is better with this style than any other I've had. I work on line and impact every practice session. I still miss (not a tour player), but those misses are almost never bad misses.

Funny finding this thread - I just gravitated back to my #9. I putted great with my SC Newport M1 last year, but for some reason this year I just flat out pulled a lot of shorter putts. What I find with the #9 is that I can prevent that by playing the ball a bit toward the toe on those 3-5 footers.

I still love my Scotty's though, so thinking of ordering a Newport 3.

Had a great story with the #9. Had some putting issues leading up to a club tournament I try to attend in EdgeWood up in Lake Tahoe for those who are familiar with the Celebrity tournament that they show during the summer. Was intending to go with what I had. Upon arriving and checking in on our first day, we intended on utilizing their practice facilities. Low and behold, they had the Odyssey #9 there at their pro shop. Never tried it before but had previously used the 8802 so familiar with the design. Long story short, ended buying the putter that day and went on to win the 2 day event. Funniest story making its way after the event was the fact that I bought the putter the day before. On a side note, I purchased it because it came with an awesome poker chip as a ball marker. One thing I noticed about the #9 was the release that I was putting with due to the toe hang. Got me really firing at the hole almost like firing a slap shot in hockey. I went ahead and sold the darn thing not too long after the tournament and ended settling on a face balance putter which fit me better. Interesting take away is that our natural putting stroke either tells us to go with more or less toe hang or a face balanced putter. Always difficult to manufacture a putting stroke to fit a putter. One thing I can say is to definitely figure out your swing arc with your putter to fit with the toe hang of the putter or no no toe hang at all. There is a perfect fit out there, you just have to find it.

Come to think of it. Every time I walk in a golf store I pick up a Ping Shea H putter for some reason. I've always thought of them as very hard to hit putter and only for a select few due to the strong arc designation. But I've always rolled them extremely well but never really chalked it up to anything. I think its time for me to pull the trigger.

Strange question to those of you using the #9/8802 style.

Do any of you use left hand low when putting? I dont recall seeing anyone use that putter with that grip.

Just out of curiosity.

I putt left hand low. And I have been for around a decade. I don't lift the left shoulder as much when I use it. I do overlap my left pinkie and ring finger over my right hand. Both thumbs on the top.

Always Loved th #9 from a style perspective but never putter well, too strong an arch needed. More a slight arch guy.

Phil goes claw grip with it.

8802 style user here.

I use regular grip for longer putts (say 15ft plus) and claw for shorter.
