How do you walk 18?

I have carried my bag forever, and I am more than capable to continue, but after getting a push cart I don't think I ever will carry again. It is so nice to be able to have whatever I feel like stuffing in my bag and not worrying about it, and I feel better after 18 pushing than carrying. I think I read a study a while back that compared ride, push, and carry and the push was the winner on strokes per round and was barely less calories burned than carrying, that's a win/win in my book.

I bought a pass at a local municipal course that is 2.5 miles from my home and I've been getting up every morning around 5:30 and teeing off around 6. I planned to just walk 9 in the morning for my game and for exercise...but I've actually gotten in 18 holes the last two days. I just have to be there at 9 so as long as I leave the course at 8:30 I can still get home, shower and get to work on time. I carry my Sunday bag with 10 clubs in it and it doesn't bother me at all-- even with two back surgeries I haven't had any real problems. I broke 70 this morning for the first time in a LONG time with a 32 on the back nine... it made my day and I'm thrilled that I decided to stay and play the second nine holes.

Usually ride, but going to give carrying a good try this season on a flat course. Just picked up a 3.5 carry bag, now considering eliminating unnecessary weight from the bag, and me, like using my lightest clubs, wearing my lightest slacks, 7 tees instead of a whole bag, ankle socks instead of calf socks, that sort of thing. Should have some interesting discoveries and looking forward to it. The bag's raw weight was not 3.5 pounds, it was 3 pounds 14.6 ounces, so a little over. Close enough, bag feels good over the shoulder.

I didnt read a single post in this thread. But this is how I walk 18. Drive the cart to the T box, hit, get back in the cart. Drive to ball, get out, hit, get back in. Repeat as necessary.

Carry on! :)

I'm 64 with a wimpy lower back. I walk with a pull cart. Was using some kind of click gear but the thing kept opening during a round. Left it in the back lane for a golfer to take.

I replaced it this year with a $59 ztech. What a difference in weight. The CG was very heavy. Really appreciate the lesser weight on the hills. I don't need any frills. and if it lasts two years, it will be cheaper to replace than the CG.

The wife kept her CG. She is obviously tougher than I am.

must say i'm surprised at the poll numbers

are carts free to use in the States or something...?

over here it's AUD$40 per round, to put it in perspective, green fees generally range from $40 to 80.....

It depends.

Home course: I have full membership so no cost for carts

Everyone else I play: around $20 USD for cart

You can't walk in Florida

woah...what the hell, you can't walk?

is that to maintain speed of play?

I suppose we only pay AUD$20 if we find someone to share a cart

I'm 54 and reasonably fit albeit slightly overweight. I play a 6500 yard course and always carry. I often play on four consecutive days and if I play early morning with no one in front I'm usually round in well under three hours.

I think the reason more people don't carry is cos they've never tried it and imagine it to be much more tiring than it actually is.

I'll walk (push cart) on most courses for 18 unless it is really hilly or very long between holes, then it is with a cart. This past weekend I played Pinehills in Plymouth, MA and if anyone here has walked the full 18 on the Jones course, my hats off to you. That is a hell of a workout. Several holes are separated by a good 1+ min full speed cart ride and with elevation.

I won't walk 18 if it is above 85 deg F pure sun and humid, 9 is the limit walking (I don't do well in heat). If I do carry (no push cart), I take out raingear, limit the number of balls and only 2 bottles of water to limit weight.

I have done/carried a Sunay bag for 9 holes a few times and that's fun. 3 Wood, 7 iron, PW, SW, and Putter.

I have to date walked all of my rounds this year other than a few charity scrambles.

I prefer to carry and usually do so. Slinging the Jones carry bag over my shoulder during the temperate seasons is my favorite way to go.

But if it gets too hot, I'll use my push cart, with the result that the push cart is generally used all of July and August. If it starts to get too hot, I want to load up with water and extra towels.

Carried last season as the club I was a member at had a low membership price but hefty cart fees... at the beginning of this season they stopped allowing walking prior to 6:00pm, which killed the value proposition for me. I moved my membership to a much nicer course with higher membership but cart included. As such, I started riding more.

Now I pretty much only walk on Monday's when the course is technically closed but they don't seem to mind members walking. On these days I carry a minimalist bag with 6-7 clubs... any other form of walking is just too difficult due to several long steep hills between green and tee. I CAN walk 18, but the back nine is even hillier than the front, so I usually just walk the front nine. The only reason I haven't sold my Rovic is because it's E-Wheels compatible and I'm considering giving that a try in the spring once they're actually shipping.

Started out a few years back walking with a cart (clickgear 3.0)

Last season walked/carried all season, switched for “more exercise”

Just recently went back to try cart (for fun) and realized after the round my lower back and hamstrings/glutes were way more sore after pushing. We have a couple hills but nothing outrageous.

Cart has been shelved indefinitely!
