Edel SLS-01 Fitting today...review/results.

To sum it up...it was pretty freaking cool. I will cut right to the chase and tell you that when Edel says these clubs are 'custom' fit...it's not a joke.

I hit irons with 85 gram/r flex shafts all the way up to 110 gram/X flex shafts. I hit heads with head weights from 260 grams all the way up to 278 grams.

I hitirons at 37", 37.5", and 38" long.

These irons will be made for MY swing. In fact, if you want to know what the 'next big thing' could be in equipment...it is the detailed fitting ability of the Edel SLS01 irons.

So...if I jump around a bit...stay with me...it was a pretty thorough and exhaustive fitting. The Edel Rep was awesome...lives in Austin, grew up in Corpus, and you can tell he loves the game.

First thing...there are 3 shafts with 3 different profiles and 3 different flexes. He cautioned me not to even worry about the shaft weights/profiles/etc. as they do not match up to graphite or steel shafts. The Paderson shafts are interesting. They are NOT smooth, in fact, I made a joke that they are 'ribbed for her pleasure'...each shaft has a different 'pattern' on it. Not sure exactly of the significance of this, but it was interesting and was NOT visible to the eye.

Anyway, the shafts come in 85, 95, and 110 grams, R, S, and X Flex, and Short Iron profile, mid iron profile, and long iron profile. How they fit into the clubs depends on your swing and what you're looking to achieve in terms of contact and ball flight.

The clubheads are something I've long wanted in a club. They are VERY compact from heel to toe. Something that is a little intimidating at first, but I got over that very quickly. There is ZERO offset...I LOVED that. The topline is kind of thickish...let me put it this way...if an MP14's topline is Taylor Swift's leg size...then this would be a fit crossfit chick...beautiful, thick without being off-putting. You could not see any of the back side of the iron at address, and the club framed the ball beautifully. There is a little weight port in the back the they use to adjust ball flight, swing weight, all kinds of variables...and YES, it makes a huge difference in what you see. Here's where things get a big weird. The feel and sound of the club varied tremendously based on how he set it up. Some shots...felt like I hit a dead on center shot with a forged blade...sometimes, it felt freakishly harsh despite getting a 'good result'. All I can say is...when the clubs were set up properly FOR ME...wow...felt as good as any forged iron I've ever hit.

So...I did not ask about every club he gave me, as I did not want to overthink stuff. He DID tell me, 'do not worry about swingweight'...he would ask how things felt...heavy, light, how was contact, feel good, sound good, etc.

I warmed up and was working primarily with my 7 and 8 iron (38" and 37.5" clubs). I was REALLY hitting the ball well and felt confident.

The first shots I hit with the Edel irons...I was just off center and HEEL side...I NEVER miss to the heel. He just smiled, handed me another club, and then the contact shifted a bit to dead freaking center of the club face.

I hit all manner of set ups...ranging from an 85 gram regular flex shaft up to the 110 gram X Flex and all points in between.

Once he 'dialed me in'...it became sort of like having an eye exam at the doctor's office. I'd hit 3 shots, then he'd hand me another club and ask "is this better or worse"...then we'd repeat and he'd mix in different club setups until he found what I was hitting with the most consistency.

I will say this...if you want to hit the ball STRAIGHT...these clubs are right up your alley. I hit several shots side by side with my clubs and the Edel's flew MUCH straighter. Trajectory of the Edel 5-PW were higher than my existing irons (X18's/Rifle 6.0), but covered the same distances....BUT they were not the towering short irons like I hit with the Cobra SL irons or the experimental clubs from the GEA....Edel's ability to 'control' trajectory is legit.

Finally, he asked me to hit some pitches in the 30-70 yard range with the PW, GW, and SW....and THIS is where I really fell in love. The clubs he set up for me felt AWESOME. I was able to flight shots, and hit them with great control...hell, it almost looked like I knew what I was doing. The ball flight was not TOWERING high like the other SL Clubs I've experimented with, but he spin was noticeably higher.

So...in the end, here are the specs he ordered up for me. LI =Long Iron Profile (higher ball flight), MI= Mid Iron Profile and SI= Short Iron Profile.

5i-pw- 37.5", 95s, 64*, midsize 58, 12g274 head

5i-LI

6i-LI

7i-LI

8i-MI

9i-MI

PW-SI

GW (SI), SW(SI) optional. All same specs as above.

I was surprised at the 95 gram shaft, but as he explained, the Paderson shafts for the SLS irons are different and that the 95 will play more like a 115 gram shaft and the S is on the 'stronger end' of stiff.

One last thing...going through the fitting with him...anyone buying a set of Edel SL Irons used...is IMO, crazy unless they know what they NEED and what they're getting. He did say that Edel will change stuff out for people, but I'm sure that is not free. If you buy these...you're really making a commitment.

Me...I'm in. I was impressed with the feel/sound/appearance by a big margin...but the RESULTS were amazing for me as well. I just hit quality shot after shot and straight as a laser repeatedly.

I've already spoken with the Rep, and will be ordering clubs in February 2018 in time for a March birthday...and I cannot wait for it.

Any questions about this by all means fire away. I will do my best to answer what I can.

Thanks for the info.... your comments echo other reviews I've read on the Edel SL fitting. I'd be really interested in giving these a try in the future. I'm all in on SL and love my Sterlings... but would love to mess with shaft profiles and try something without offset.

Very cool experience.

Never done a fitting but I have 3 edel wedges I picked up lightly used that I love.

I hit a couple of the Edel Rep's wedges...and while they were not set up for me...I did like them as well...first though...irons.

He did tell me that if I want an SL LW, they would MAKE one for me...literally...make it by finding the sole grind I want and then grinding the weight down to be set up as an SL iron. Pretty freaking cool.

Osnola,

Great to hear about Edel's fitting process!

This is a link David Edel did with Golf Science Lab, he offers a lot of information that most will probably not understand. Some of it seems simple and obvious on the surface but he's truly offering up some advanced information!

I am very interested in this - Just not quite sure when I can get there.

Did you try the 3 and 4 iron? If so what were your results-

To me the benefit to single length is more consistency in the long irons.

I like the description of the looks of these - I currently play Hogan Ft. Worth blades which are compact with a thin top line- I could get over a thicker top line but I really like how compact they are - really makes me focus on the shot.

Sounds almost exactly like my set up! Congrats.

Thanks.

As an aside...I am very much interested in y'alls grips. I will probably give y'all a call tomorrow. I have questions about the durability of them, care, and longevity.

Sure thing. Where in Texas are you?

Corpus Christi...I want to get the Come and Take it head cover and I need a putter grip.

Have you gotten out for many rounds yet with your irons? What do you think? Did you come from standard length irons or from another set of SL irons?

I've had mixed results with fitters...it sounds like you had a great experience...can you tell me the fitters name/business name? Thanks
