Biderman in Wilmington, DE.

Always pure, beautiful facilities and always empty. I've been told they do between 7-9k rounds a year. Classic Dick Wilson design cut through the hills among the Northern DE, Southeastern PA border. I could play there every day.

In Colorado...all doable from DIA. All public access.

Bear Dance

Saddleback

Riverdale Dunes

Played Bear Dance in August on a guys trip... that is a really good golf course. Some cool holes, a lot of memorable holes, and it's a pretty golf course as well. Huge fan of that place.

The Harvester in Iowa. Underrated even as a top 50 public course. Middle of nowhere, but it is awesome.

This. 1,000,000,000x this

Pls do yourself a favor and play this when your passing through Iowa.

Harvester is very high on the list of courses I want to play

Why does Harvester have such a short season? Do they go private after July 31st or just shut it down?

They don’t shut it down until November. Every year I make my trek to Iowa the second week in August and stay and play there exclusively.

The owner of the land loves golf and tries to keep the grounds manicured to the 9’s. Honestly most days there are more employees than golfers. And the second point is he has priced the course high to keep out riff raff. He would

Rather present a perfect course to people who would appreciate it

It’s a stunning property with absolutely stunning conditions.

I'm no high-roller, but since when is $100 or so for a round high?

And there are lot's of golfers spending well above that for a round of golf, who have no appreciation for a 'perfect course'. You might even call them riff raff.

There are a lot of courses I like but the one of the better ones almost no one talks about is Bethpage Red course. Everyone wants to play the Black course but Red is a tough par 70, 6,875 yard course that is usually in great condition and provides plenty of risk / reward decisions to longer hitters.

Yes indeed, I played it alone one very cold April day when the Black was closed and had a great time, even on foot . It sure is fun. But I still hanker to go back and have a shot at the Black.

Moraine Country Club in Dayton, OH.

Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville, MI.

Sweetens Cove Golf Club in S Pittsburg, TN.

How is the new Meadowbrook? I haven't played it since the redesign

I think it's fantastic. It's quirky and fun with some really great green complexes including some templates like a punchbowl, lions mouth and biarritz along with a replica of the bathtub green that Willie Park built at Hunterscombe in England and an amazing little backboard green that's really cool and unique. It has a decidedly old school, pre-1920s feel to it that I love. They took a ton of trees out and really opened up what is a great piece of property. It's designed to be firm and fast and reward the ground game. It's very unique for the Detroit area. I think it's a huge home run.

Black is a championship course and it's a great way to measure your progress as a golfer. First time I played it, I was literally exhausted from walking the course. I'm pretty sure I saw areas on that course no one else has. Each year has been progressively better but it's still a really tough challenge. Red is also very challenging but no one gets excited when you tell them you played Bethpage and follow it up with Red.

iowans complain about the price of a round there when there are multiple options with a+ conditions at a fraction of the price. It’s not hard to grow grass and have wonderful conditions in Iowa.

When they first opened they were upper 60-70$ range and the course was a lot more full than it is now. When I go I might see 3 cars in the lot all day. And it’s perfect.

It’s 15 minutes north of prairie meadows casino/horse track. You tell me why the tee sheet is empty if it isn’t price. It’s the best thing for 200 square miles

I’ve never seen the July 31 restriction. I always stay on property in August.

Everyone who mentioned The Harvester is a genius.

The architect, Keith Foster, is responsible for other under-the-radar gems around the country. Three of my favorites in Texas are:

  • The Quarry (San Antonio)
  • The Bandit (Seguin)
  • Cypresswood Tradition (Spring)

Each year, the Monday qualifier for the Houston Open is held at the Tradition, and US Open qualifiers are often held there, too.

Some other personal favorites are:

  • Vaaler Creek (Blanco, TX)
  • Nevel Meade (Prospect, KY)
  • The Wilderness (Lake Jackson, TX)

Interesting fact about Keith Foster, he no longer does new courses. He has decided to concentrate on restoration projects at great old courses and he is one of the best. He has done amazing work at Philadelphia Cricket Club, Baltimore CC, Colonial CC, Southern Hills, Moraine CC, Orchard Lake CC and others.

$100 per round is expensive for me. The most expensive course in my area is only $50 in peak season. Also have to consider the location, rural Iowa with no major metro anywhere close and that it’s not a “destination” course, ie. Bandon, Streamsong, etc that are also in the middle of nowhere.

Agreed. My bone of contention was around the condescension of the 'riff-raff' comment and that a green fee amount is some grand arbiter for deciding who's going to blast tunes, get drunk, and leave cart tire marks.

Then don’t assume my riff raff comment was derogatory. When you’re the most expensive course in 12 zip codes you do it for a reason.

Golf course riff raff in my mind is jorts or jeans. Period
