Overspeed Training

Has anyone done any overspeed training with their kids? My son is 10 and wondering if it is worth it or even wise at this point.

At one point, we borrowed one of those USKG Swing Speed Trainers from someone. We weren't very diligent about it. I am planning on making my own by finding a used club at Goodwill for less than $5 and cutting it instead of spending $30.

I can't remember, but does anyone know if that is just a plastic golf ball on the end of the USKG swing speed trainer?

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

Was looking at this but couldn't figure out if this is a weighted club (like orange whip), or is it a lightweight aid, like lighter than a normal club?

It was definitely very light. The shaft was a little whippy also. What I can't remember is if the ball was just plastic (I think it is) or if it was an actual golf ball empty "shell" (perhaps made of urethane for example).

Mine is doing the Drive 400 and is in week 3.

How is he liking it?

Haven’t noticed a huge difference yet. He has picked up 7 mph in club head speed, but I think it is more due to overall growth. Right now he is just doing the soft tissue, stretch, and speed routine every other day. The thing I am impressed with most right now is the balance he is gaining. Everything you do to one side of the body you do to the other side. So in the swing routines you swing left and right handed. It started as a hour and a half workout. Once he learned the videos it has whittled down to 45 minutes. He likes the soft tissue because it is like a full body massage.

Because of school I haven’t even attempted to introduce the muscle building routine to him which is done every other day not on the speed days. I haven’t even read it yet. Plan on introducing this over Christmas break.

Found a Tour-X Size 2 Driver at Goodwill last night for $3. Length was 34" from where the ferrule meets the head to the end of the grip. Based upon the USKG RS-51 swing speed trainer, the length with a plastic golf ball at the end should be between 33-34" inches. I'll get a pic up when I have completed the project. All said and done (perhaps some super glue included) it should be less than $10. For my kid's age range (7-9), these types of swing trainers seem like a good idea. I'll be following this thread for the older kids and how they fare on those more advanced speed/strength programs.

We have one from US kids. It's not a plastic ball on the end, hard outer shell. It is not weighted either. The point of the training aid is help show where the speed of the swing matters. If you swing it right, you should hear the whooshing sound before the impact point. We have a 57 inch... but my 7 year old uses it too, she is in 51 inch clubs.

Thanks on the hard outer shell information. For now, I have my choice between drilling a hole in a plastic golf ball or drilling a hole in one of those foam practice balls. I think I am going to try to the foam ball. I've got some threading dies from a tap kit I use when working on old cars. I'm going to thread the end of the shaft (mostly just to rough it up) and screw it into an undersized hole in the foam practice ball.

I was at Sea Island about a year ago and the highly reccomended the super speed golf system. I know some folks whose kids use the program and they have gotten good results.

https://superspeedgolf.com

Crossfield is doing a series right now on the perfect drive and just did an episode on swing speed working with a long drive coach. He was using the super speed set and was getting a little bit more SS just messing around in an hour or so. Obviously you have to train for a while with them to get repetitive results, and he touches on that in the video.

FWIW, Madison likes it and uses it with some of her juniors. Like anything, the child will only get out of it what they put into it and and if they are unable to discipline themselves and focus on the routine, then no, it’s not worth it.

Cheers?

A few updated pics of my sub-$10 swing speed trainer. So far, I've spent $3 on a driver, 10 minutes on using my tap tools. Gotta swing by the $ store and pick up some cheap super glue. Just need to drill an undersized hole in a foam practice ball, put on some super glue and screw it in.

If I'm looking at Super Speed system for my 10 year old, should I go with the All Star version (listed to age 11) or the junior version (12 to 15 y/o)?

Have measured swing speed lately, but I do believe Drive 400 is working. He is in week 5 of the program. Played a 244 yard par 4 this evening. No wind and what the little there was, was a cross wind. Around 62 degrees and a little moist. He hits his drive over the green about 270. Have a couple of lessons coming up and will have his coach measure his speed.

Shaved the driver face, huh? Just kidding! Your testimonial is making me want to spend money... damn you!!!

The Drive 400 is $25.00. Even if it doesn’t give you what you are looking for out of it, you get a great stretching and soft tissue workout. It is worth the $25.00.

I like the concept. I just turned 52, was in horrible shape a year ago. I sit behind a desk half the day, drive the other half. Just thinking about getting in shape got me 5 mph the first month (mostly core strength), some heavy club training got a few more. In early SS process now, just had elbow surgery 5 months ago, already back close to 115. I'm NOT looking for major SS, just to get in shape......Funny how things happen......The funny part is I'm a battered boy. Every time I count how many bones I've broken, I forget one, Army Ranger here with a double malfunction chute, landed in a tree from 1200'. I have THREE things that end in "itis"........I'm F'ing lucky I can get out bed in the morning, much less cry about hitting the golf ball farther........"Jump higher, run faster, shoot straighter, hit it farther".....Isn't that what EVERY boy wants to do?......LOL

Drive400 says it can be used for youth....but do they give an actual youth age number? My kid is 7, so this seems like a nice tool/program to look for when he is a bit older (10? 12?).

I am not an expert by any means.

This is a great presentation by experts.

7-9 is a speed window.

Ah yes, I am familiar with the speed window concept. I think I was lookign at this Drive400 program and saying to myself "my kid will never do such a program at this age". I'm pretty sure I'll keep him active in some other sports (basketball, badminton, baseball, bowling, etc...) and continue to work on his swing speed with some overspeed training. The stretching could be a good thing to add in (or perhaps some yoga).

Thanks for the information.

Personally, I wouldn't do it at 7.

The more and more my son does the Drive 400 the better and better it gets. The program itself has a soft tissue workout which is awesome. A soft tissue workout is extremely important for golfers. It really helps with joints, agility, maneuverability, reduces soft tissue restrictions that can p[prohibit you from swinging properly, as well as reduce the chances of injury. My daughters college team does soft tissue workouts every other day, they work. The stretch program is very good as well. It works the areas of the body that you really need to engage to increase swing speed. The swing program itself not only works on speed, but it works developing BALANCE and engaging the proper muscles to develop a powerful swing and increase club head speed. For these reasons alone I would invest the $25.00 into Rob's program. His coach today at his lesson asked what he was doing because he could see a definite improvement in distance.

  • 3 months later...

Broke down and purchased the Super Speeds about a week and a half ago. So far really liking it better than the Drive 400. While the Drive 400 was great, it took too much time out of the day for a junior golfer. He would spend 30 minutes just on stretching and rolling out muscles. SS program takes about 15-20 minutes start to finish.

After stretching I measure Swing Speed on the Voice Caddie every single session. After the SS program I measure the swing speed again. He is 3-4 mph faster after the training session than before it. I give him 3 swings before the session and take the best then another 3 swings after the session and take the best. Ball speed is more important, but we are using SoftCore range balls that I know don't correlate to the distance of the Pro V he is now using. After a month I will give you updated results on the mph increases.

Hey Heavy,

Thanks for sharing. I have been waiting to pull the trigger on this. Looks like you have cost me some more money...again!!! HA!! I emailed Superspeed awhile back to ask if I should get the junior set or the regular. They recommended the Junior set. Is that what you bought?

Thanks again

They recommended the Adult set. He is already swinging adult driver not cut down and was at 90mph at the time.
