Callaway APEX MB RAW
Pontus ·
So I just heard from a local fitter that Callaway are making the apex mb "raw" version available for leftys 2018 in Sweden. Huge fan of the look you get with a raw finish. But since they does not come cheap and I will use them for some years (I hope so atleast). How will the raw finish/ rust affect the life cycle compared to a forged non-raw finish??

Thats interesting, so you feel like the groves stays sharper longer than non-raws? But refinish that's for looks only, I am right? If they got atleast the same life time as non-raws, Im all over these!
No idea. Weird if they were offered in europe but not the US?

This was a question that I asked in the Callaway Live Chat thread. Basically they aren't offering it in the US right now and there was more of a demand for it overseas. I really don't see how but surely we will see them at some point.

MANY moons ago I was a tech rep for a major OEM and the year I started this company stopped offering RAW wedges to consumers - you guys can figure this out. Anyways when I asked why - because it was always my preference, i was told it was because in pro shops and big box the average consumer never wanted to buy a club that was already rusted. They chose to abandon the RAW wedges instead of offer consumer education about the product anymore.
I think it comes down to consumer preference and what sells in what markets. If it was up to me all my irons and wedges would be raw.

I think it was Nike who had the blue wax "headcovers" on it's Raw Wedges? ... Maybe it was Mizuno ... I forget, but I thought that was a really, really, good idea. Prevents the pre-purchase rust and protects from dings and dents as an added bonus. I understand it's probably a costly proposition to major OEM's, but I think a guy in the market to buy Raw Wedges, doesn't have an issue paying a couple extra bucks for the post production, pre sale, waxing process.

Chrome is a clean look, but chrome will wear over time anyway.
There is nothing like the feel of a raw wedge or iron. Any plating on metal will make the head feel harder.
Raw irons are easier to work with asthetically. You can sand blast them, polish them, rust them, hand sand them, etc. You can do a rich black oxide, a rusty oil can patina, torch finish, polish to a natural silver metal finish. You cant do any of that with chrome plated finish.
Raw is best!

Best advice is to find a friend to ship you a set thats the best bet vs, trying to buy online. I'm sure there's a GolfWRX friend who would be happy to help.
On a side note, I know I would prefer the raw over chrome.

Wish I could say the same. Only new wedges this year. Too much college. Many college.
Oh well I really like my Apex MBs that are a generation old very much so don't feel bad.

Its an interesting thought. But I agree.......the answer is no. I'd say over 50% or more of the PGA tour players use raw wedges. Enough said there.

I'm living in Australia now and they have them online here. If you're struggling then I can always help out If someone wants them shipping.
I.e. Get them sent to my house and I can post them at the post office (obviously if you guys pay for the postage) if it's cheaper than ordering them off a foreign site and paying for postage.
