I tried it, but im more comfortable with 46,50,54,58... distance gapping wasnt as much a problem as was lack a of pitching and chipping options.. the more lofts do help with distance gapping too and spin control but too many times with 52,58 i wish i had a 54 or 56 for medium length chips or pitches with some green to cover.

Played a similar setup for a long time. It works great for me. Just moved to a new setup (46-54-60) but it functions the same as 46-52-58.

Yes that's the setup I used last season and it was the best gapping decision I've made. I learned to hit all the shots with the 58 which made me a better wedge player.

In true WRX fashion I've added a 50, 56, 60, 64 this offseason for options to go along with the 52 and 58. No idea what setup I'll go with. But the backup bag will surely be well stocked.

I've been doing that for years. I tried 4 wedges and it doesn't mix with me. Wedge play is my strength and I struggled. Too many options in my opinion. 3 wedges just makes it all simpler.

46-54 thats quite the gap, I assume you are quite good at controlling your PW.

I was just thinking that half swings with the 46/52/58 would gap well with the full shorts

Have used the 46-52-58 set up since 2006. Use to play the 48-52-56-60 but then put in a hybrid so something had to give. I have no problems with gapping, I can stretch the 58 to 100yds when needed or also hit soft 52's 95-100yds all the way up to 120, just depends on what I'm feeling. As stated above, I think to many wedges can be overkill, not to mention the different types of shots you can learn to hit with fewer clubs.

I think it would take some getting used to thats for sure but it could work for me. im not sure what club I would add to the top of my bag though, possibly a 3 hybrid for long approach shots or a high launching 5 wood

46-52-60 here and no issues. I don't hit full shots with the lob wedge anyways, so gapping is not a problem from 52-60. From 90-100, I'm not hitting a full lob wedge, I'm hitting a 10 o'clock backswing 52 and it will flight with plenty of trajectory and bite for almost any pin. I find it much easier to control distance with less loft than with a lob wedge in that 80-115 range.

I don't understand how gapping issues can be a problem for some. Anyone that employs a 9 o'clock / 10 o'clock / Full swing method of pitching should have plenty of overlap in distances with a 3 wedge setup that will give you a variety of flight options for any shot. My 52 is my go-to pitching machine, but I have options with the 46 and 60 depending on the shot and conditions.

I've contemplated this setup many times. My main reason is that around the greens I go with my lob wedge if I need height, and my sand wedge if I want to bump and run. The gap wedge is the least used club in my bag because of my sand and lob wedge comfort. However, I can't just take my gap wedge out as I won't have a 115-120 club. It sucks, but no one said golf was fair.

I played 46-52-58 setup for years, and really liked it when it came to around the greens. I would normally just do everything with my 58 and was quiet happy with that, took a lot of the guess work and overthinking out of it for me.

But I just switched to 46-50-54-58 this year and I like it for any full shot. Still mainly use the 58 around the greens, but I had always struggled with distance with the 3 wedge setup on full shots. I find myself reaching for my 54 a lot more than I would reach for my 3 iron throughout a round.

i played this exact set up for a long time. then i have tried to adjust all my club gap to spread out my iron set. What i really really want is a 8 iron set from 20 degrees to 49 degrees in the pitching wedge. then 54 and 60 degree wedges. that opens a slot for something else.

I've used 46/53/60 for the past 2 years...worked fantastic. covers 120/105/80. Thought about carrying four wedges but if you get comfortable with the 85% shots of each, you really don't want to mess it up by adding a 4th wedge, which would require adjusting at least 1 if not more of the other wedges.

the hardest thing was finding out what bounces I needed. Took buying about 20 wedges but I now know! haha.

Took the plunge on this setup yesterday. Going from 46/50/54/58 to 46/52/58.

I use the 58 for most of shots 60-70yrds in unless its a bump and run so the 50/54 we only really covering a set distance. I started hitting a knock down PW last season that really took away the need for the 50 as well.

This is my favorite wedge setup. I like playing a matching PW first and foremost and I find 2 wedges to work well for me. More than that gets somewhat confusing. The 52 works from any tight lies plus some fuller shots from the fairway. I find the 58* alot easier to hit than a 60, and with that much loft you have plenty of versatility from thicker grass, sand, less green to work with etc.

Seems like most with this 46/52/58ish setup are using their lob wedge from the 60-80 yard range.

While I can be effective from that range with the 60, I find the 52 to be much more consistent.

So much easier to mishit the 60 in my opinion. With the 52 I can get more of the clubface on the ball and find that distance control is better.

On the soft bent-grass greens I play, stopping the ball quickly is not a problem.

Am I an outlier or do others take a similar approach (no pun intended)?

EDIT: I have found on golf trips in the south, playing on firm/quick bermuda greens, I can really struggle to stop it using the 52 from this range and pull the 60 more often. So I can understand if you are used to playing these type of greens and think I'm nuts.

I am going back this direction myself, I don't play much anymore and when I do it's with family from tees more forward than I should be playing and I hit alot more wedges than long irons. Not playing much also makes the partial wedges tougher to dial in.
