Golfing in Bali

Planning on a trip to Bali in March with my wife and in-laws. I will be the only one playing so I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I am still deciding on where to stay but I have been looking at the Samaya Villas Resort or the Pan Pacific at the Nirwana Bali Golf Club. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

I was in Bali a couple of years ago and - I think - I played every golf course on the island (all 3 of them). Where you play should really be dictated by where you stay, as traveling on the island is not trivial (the roads are terrible). I'd rank the clubs as: (1) Nirwana; (2) Handara Kosaido; (3) Bali Golf & Country Club.

Nirwana was the best. By far. So much so that I consider making the 30 hour trip back to Bali for no reason but to play there again. In my opinion, this is one of the best golfing experiences in the world. A few of the holes rival any in the world for view/design/awestruck factor.

Handara Kosaido is a pretty well laid out, well designed golf course. Its big issue is that it's a million miles from where you're probably staying. Actually, it's probably only 50 miles, but a 6 hour drive. If I was staying at that resort, I would play the golf course and be pretty happy with it. But it's not worth the trip.

Bali Golf & Country Club is in Nusa Dua, and relatively convenient if your resort is down there. It's a pretty good resort course. A couple of fun holes. It's good for a vacation golf fix, but isn't anything to write home about.

Anyone been to Bali recently? Any hints or tips on where to stay and where to play golf?

I'm going to Jakarta. Bali is a small island, they have fewer golf courses than in Jakarta. If you want to play golf, Jakarta is a pretty good place for visitors.

Agree on the traffic, but disagree on the course. Ria Bintan (near Singapore) is better IMHO. I have only played Nirwana and thought it was pretty good, but can think of better in Asia.

Late reply but FYI. Caddy is mandatory to play any courses in the country and caddy tip are acceptable at about Usd$15(18holes) on current exchange rate / about 200.000Rupiah. It's good rate for all around courses in the country.

Uh. Ria Bintan is not on Bali.

Sadly, I believe Nirwana is NLE...but it was the best on the island.
