Texsport, I'm curious if you have a mini-museum at home with all the great clubs you have in that collection? My wife omplains with just the "non-special" sticks I've collected

Luckily I'm married to a terrific woman, who allows me to have to man cave full of golf clubs, cameras, printers, guns, and exercise equipment.

I do have over flow in a storage location - why I can't always locate stuff quickly some time.

Besides that, I always tell my wife that you can never have enough golf clubs, cameras, or guns - and she always, immediately, adds her stuff to the list!

Wow what a fantastic set of Staffs - and 1-Pw to boot. That's a great find. I'm not any kind of Wilson expert but they look like the late 80's early 90's '1971-72' Dynapower Button back reissues, but without the button hole or usual stampings. The stampings on these look late 80's to me too. Probably some special grinding as well. I put my 71's against your picture and the muscle profile looks almost identical.

They're so smooth and clean looking. Really a beautiful blade. Please post more pictures!

Hultis-

The celebrated N-custom ground "Staff" irons. 1-PW. So Clean!

Very similar to those Wilson/Walter Hagen T-1399 custom ground irons for Ben Crenshaw. No "Fluid Feel" drill-thru hosel for these "Staffs" either.

"According to the seller they used to belong to a PGA Tour player, can't remember the name though." ?

Unfortunately, Wilson Golf closed access to their Custom Department, and those celebrated custom club records in 3 ring binders, after the 2014 Centennial season.

It has been speculated that Robert Mendralla Jr has these 3 ring binders due to his fathers 57 years of service to Wilson, but again, Wilson does not mention it.

If one had to make an educated guess-

These N-3880 custom series Staff irons were done between 1987 and 1989. It is likely a custom club supervised and/or ground by Robert Mendralla Sr (RIP)

Wilson Golf made 3,000 limited edition sets of the celebrated 1971 Wilson Staff "Buttonback" Dynapower irons in 1986. (In '93 Wilson made remakes of '69 and '71s)

In 1987, The new "Staff" iron stamping with the "Fluid Feel" drill-thru hosel was offered.

The "W/S" shield logo made an appearance then. The gold "W/S" shield logo stamp was also featured in the 1988 Staff "Gooseneck" model.

The "W/S" shield logo was not present on the LH Staff model, but is on a limited number of Staff Gooseneck irons.

Freddie-

These are younger than your Staff Tour Blade "B L" custom grinds for Langer, but it is quite possible to ask your Wilson contact about them.

1-PW?...Really?

Goodness.

That would be 2016 US Senior Open Champion Gene Sauers, who won at Scioto CC in Columbus, OH...

*Flash*The same Gene Sauers who lost the 2014 US Senior Open to Colin Montgomerie in a 3 hole playoff at Oak Hill GC in Edmond, OK

Wrote the update as today the USGA announced that all of it's 2018 and future Open Championships will be decided in a 2-hole playoff.*

*Television $$$$$$$$ wins.

Found an old email conversation with the guy I bought the from. The original owner was Gene Sauers.

I'll post some more pictures later today.

Gene Sauers .. thats great owning one of his sets. A great player, multiple PGA tour winner. I have a few WB Texan drivers that were his..

What a great set they would make! Well... someone had to say it.

Freddie-

"Anybody know what model Wilson Staff iron Freddie Couples played around the year 1985?"

Will try to find out through channels about the mysterious Wilson Staff custom set done for Fred Couples...

Wait a minute.....

Don't you already have an '85 set of Staff Tour Blade irons 1-PW done by Robert Mendralla Sr for Masters Champion Bernhard Langer?

Oh, you'd like to compare them....

ok....

PS- Have seen enough....

Wilson didn't offer a single LH set of FG Tour 100 Forged blade irons in 2014...

...will just have to make my own....

Those are stunning Tim. My late Grandfather payed those beginning in 1973 or which ever year they came out until 1 year before he passed in 2008. His sons as well as myself , my brother and Farher used to make fun of the fact that he never changed his irons after all those years. Guy knew what he was doing. I am a Staff man at heart

Thanks to all for your responses.

Rex235 in particular, thank you for the detailed information about the custom shop, and what may have become of their records. Per your interest in additional photos, I have added a few to this post. As you can see from the photos, the top line is very thin. Additionally, the leading edge seems to be a good bit more beveled than a standard set.

Nice to see the other examples of Wilson's custom work through the years. FreddieC, that Langer set is awfully nice looking. I am curious to hear how you managed to find them.

Very nice acquisition!
