But let's not fall into the trap of thinking that because a course is controversial, that makes it a great course.

Can you name a great course with Putt Putt greens?

But lets not fall into the trap of thinking that because a course we have never played has so called putt putt greens panned by some, that it makes it a bad course.

Oakmont.

Fair enough.

Bad example imo. Oakmonts greens are hard but not ridiculous. I've seen worse and I'd be surprised if Black's greens resembled Oakmonts at all.

First hole greens ^^

Par3 17th^^

There are holes where’s there strategy and you got to use the ground game and some imagination but for most part it’s just goofy. The par4 14th should be blown up. The 13th-15th stretch is really really goofy.

This is true. As I've said a few times before in various places, I think there is value in making something different even if the cost is upsetting some golfers. There are too many generic courses out there, especially in Florida.

Bad and different > Average and boring

Love the photos, I get many wont care for it. Puts a putter in hands where on most courses you are chipping (I may still be chipping:). Im booked for March. Cant wait, looks like so much fun, playing the red twice and black twice. Not a fan of the Blue. As one who remains optimistic about the Black, Ill give it a review when I get back.

One of my closest friends just played there and loved it. Said it was a ton of fun as long as you can leave the Scorecard in your pocket. Someone whose opinion I trust more than most. Hopefully I'll get to play it end of month.

BTW he said a few times people in his group chipped off the greens on some of the larger ones when far away from the hole. That is definitely not something you see every day.

I'll be back a 3rd time next week. Hate the putting but don't know why I am looking forward to going back. I chipped on the 14th last time. My caddie told me Gil Hanse wants a re-do on 14th green.

It's definitely growing on me.

For those that have experience, how does this compare to Old MacDonald? From the comments, it sounds very similar with exception to the H green.

"I'll play the Red and Blue again in a minute. But never the Black. The Red and Blue are eminently playable great designs with very strong green complexes. The Black is playable (almost super easy) until you get to those putt-putt designed greens. Old MacDonald at Bandon Dunes has huge greens but they are playable and somewhat reasonable. Black's are just silly and have extremely limited options for pin placements."

Played the black yesterday. Regarding the greens they were fast, smooth and overall in immaculate shape. Putting was easy if you ended up with a reasonable breaking putt. However, I have to agree that about 1/4 of the greens were dumb. The ones that really stood out were 9, 1 and 14. 9 is a bowl and while it looks cool it is pointless. I had a 13 foot putt and had to hit it 12 feet left with enough speed to pass the hole by 20 feet to rise a mound in a quarter circle back down to try and get it within 10 feet. Hole 14 was easy for me out of luck. Wind was strong out of the back and drove the green to within 4 feet and made eagle. (Side note, got three hole in ones but that was my first eagle on a par 4). However, both playing partners four putted because it appeared they buried several elephants in shallow graves on the green. Hole one is a short par 5 but the green is huge with several large mounts. Plus you should never have to putt over a sprinkler head if your on the green.

Pace of play was good, never had to wait on the group ahead. Overall condition was great, but there were several holes where the tee shot was a little blind or confusing on where you would want to hit it. This is easily fixed with course knowledge.

I did have a two issues with the resort itself.

One was with the young lady at the turn. We had a 15 minute discussion on simple math. Using her calculator, she added up a Pepsi $3, a bag of peanuts $3 and a snickers bar $3 for a total of $18. I told her that her math was off and she doubled and then tripled checked her math on her calculator. Each time the total was $18. It is hard to believe that she couldn’t do simple math or use a calculator correctly. Kind of makes me think she was trying to rip me off.

The other issue I had was regarding the caddies. I did not use one but they tried to force one on me a few times. On the other hand, all of he rangers on the course were very polite and went out of their way to help players enjoy their round.

If my buddies wanted to play it, I would play it again. However, I’d pick blue every time. I would rather play Grand Cypress new over the black.

Just got back from three days at Streamsong. Played Blue, Red, and Black. Our group walked 85 holes. Prior to going the group was a little worried about the Black course round. We fortunately play the eleven hole loop at the Black after our first 18on the Blue. Our group was made up of 5 to scratch. The overall consensus was the Red was probably the best with the Black being right there with it. Don’t let any reviews worry you. All three courses were in great condition with probably the best quality green surfaces.

Would recommend BVT for your dinning...great bar and menu.

I have played Oakmont and while the greens are very difficult they are not putt putt.

  • 2 weeks later...

Played the black and red today and have to say I thought the Black was a better course and more enjoyable. I didn’t have a single put I would say was ridiculous. They were actually very tame considering this thread. I thought the course was open to scoring well if you are aware of where the pins were and played the the correct area. 14 is a good hole imo but I did eagle it. Lol. 15 is also a goo day hole. Really. 13-15 was one of the better stretches. There wasn’t a single over three putt in our entire group. I really don’t understand what all the complaints are about other than it’s different from what people are used to.

Question - has anyone had difficulty getting a tee time after 2:00pm? Apparently, they don’t accept tee times after 2:00pm and it’s “walk-up” only. I’m getting there on a Thursday’s after 2 and am hoping to be able to get on one of the courses. Playing 36 that Friday and Saturday, will have to “walk-up” for the second 18 each day.

Yes they wouldnt give me a second tee time ether and I teed off at 8 two days in a row. Worked out fine though when we got done they got us right out. Pace of play was not great but we did barely get 36 in both days.

As far as the Black course goes I really enjoyed it. I don't think alot of the criticism is fair. I actually think it's misunderstood and it's the resorts fault for not having the starter explain on the first tee. I've heard a lot of complaints that the greens are way too big and unfair and there is alot of 4 putts etc. The course is designed with the green surrounds being the same grass and height as the greens themselves. This was done to encourage the ground game with shots into the greens. The normal Bermuda gets too sticky during much of the season.

You will see inside the green surface an outline of green dots. That is the actual green. If you are outside the dots your not on the green and are free to use any club you want. I don't think they do a good job of explaining this at all. Once on the actual green the contours are not ridiculous and you end up with alot of makable putts from my experience.

From what everyone is saying it almost sounds like the greens are similar to the castle course in St. Andrews? I’ve not played the black yet, but played the red and the blue a few years ago and loved the red. Would love to go back

I would not compare it to the Castle course at all. I do not like the Castle course at all other than the views. Those greens r goofy. The Black doesnt really remind me of anything I've played around the greens again the way they have the same grass from the greens on the surrounds and cut it the same height is very unique and seems to be polarizing and confusing to people.

So are we talking about a stupid layout or are we talking about tough greens? I love tough greens to be honest... playing on flat large resort greens has done nothing for my putting over the years. I get that some people like it however not me. I love the challenge of fast undulating greens. I play a course called Trestle Creek just west of Edmonton Alberta and it has some seriously tough greens... the course is ok but its the greens that keep me coming back. I seriously think that Streamsong had this in mind when the courses were built... to be different or to a degree better than other resort courses. I hope to get a round in there with my son this Feb while on vacation. To each their own I guess and if I get there I will definitely update a post on this thread with my experience. Cheers!!

Played right at 2 PM last week. We played the last hole in darkness. 17 was barely light and had hard time seeing the shots.

Does Streamsong offer twilight rates?

They don't. As mentioned above, they don't even have tee times later in the afternoon, unless you a replaying or a walk up. But it is still full price or replay rate, which i think is half off.

They also have a 6 or 12 hope loop on Red/Blue and an 11 hope loop on Black

We are playing at 9am on Saturday so depending on when we finish our round, we will either go for a full replay or once of the above mentioned loops.
