For me it's a 48/52/56. For years I didn't know better and followed the crowd and my setup was 48/56/60 but as my game got better in the last couple of years, I my 100y approach shots were killing me because I had to choke down on my 48. I got sick of it and got a 52 and kicked out my 60 to make room. I don't miss my 60 as I can simply open the face of my 56 or even my 52 if the lie is tight.

Played a similar setup for a long time. It works great for me. Just moved to a new setup (46-54-60) but it functions the same as 46-52-58.

Played with 46, 50, 54, 58 for about three seasons, but found I had too many options, and too much overlap in the yardage matrix for partial swings.

I replaced my X20T PW and CG.14 G, S and L with Callaway MD3 48* and 54*, and MD-PM 60* (see below). This had really simplified my short game.

This leaves about a 16-yd gap between 9i and 48* PW, but I know it's there. I can choke down on 9i to shave yardage, or hood the PW for a bit of extra yardage.

I've been using 46* - 52* - 58* for the past couple of years and I really dig it. It's brought my confidence up greatly after landing some good shots that required me to use my imagination. The traditional 52/56/60 approach has been fine for me in the past and I understand exactly why it works but I'm reminded of the stories of players in the past using a 56 and doing whatever the hell they wanted with it. I love that simplified way of wedge play.

That being said, I did pick up a PM 64* for the special shots where I don't have much room and need something to go high and stop quickly. Why not? I had the room.

So really the same as I have set up but the 56 rather than the 58

I used to play set PW at 46, 52 and 58. I rarely play a full set and had space in the bag, so one day in the golf shop I was intrigued by the PM 64 and bought it more out of curiosity than anything. Ended up loving it and rarlely used my 58 around the greens after that, just 52 or the 64. My 58 had a V grind that I was never a big fan of for many shots around the green. Ended up playing PW, 52, 64 in my half set most of last year and played just fine. Shot even par twice with this setup, which is my personal record on that particular course. I can hit soft shots with the 52, but still that gap was on a few occasions just slightly to big to be ideal.

This year, I'm going to give the new MD4 X grind a try in a 60, so hopefully I will go PW, 52, 60 for my half set and drop in the 64 for those few occasions I want to push a cart instead of carry my Sunday bag. I really don't think I will miss a something in between. I know what my 52 can do for me. We'll see...

I was thinking about ditching my pw and go 9 iron (42), sm6 48 (47), sm6 52 and 58. I wonder what the gap will be...

I got 9 iron (41) - 46SM6

If you are comfortable taking a bit off the 9 iron there will be no gapping issues here. I find choking up just a bit takes around 5 yards off the 9 iron.

I played PW, 52, 58 for years. And loved it. If you're comfortable hitting 3/4 shots with the 52 it's no big deal.

A year or so ago I decided to try 52-56-60 and drop the 3 iron.

Best decision I made. Don't hit very many shots with 3 iron, but there are a number of shots I can play with the 56.

I prefer options for short game vs the 3 iron.

I've played 46/52/58 for probably the last 5 seasons. Prior to that I had played 46/54/60. With the 52/58 set up I was playing each wedge more evenly depending upon the amount of run out I was looking for on chips. I even incorporated the PW into that as well, but I was never as consistent with this set-up as I remember being with my 54/60. I only used the 60 for flops and bunker shots, so it didn't see a huge amount of use. I used the 54 for everything else and got very good with it due to the versatility of the DSG grind from Cleveland. The 52/58 are Nike SV+ with a bog standard grind and I have never had the same versatility with those that I had with my Cleveland.

It's time for new wedges and I'm not sure how I'm going to approach it. I had been toying with going to a 50/56 combo mostly for the full shot distance gapping as I'm getting older and losing swing speed. The 56 would get the bulk of the work around the green. Maybe time to consider adding a specialty lob wedge to the mix as I've got room for it as I'm playing less than a full set.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

  • 3 weeks later...

the funny thing is that I would love to try the 46 52 58 setup but I really don't need anything at the top end of my bag so really whats the point, I could try a 5 wood I guess for longer higher shots into greens possibly

I play this setup. I'm a total feel guy inside 100y and more comfortable working the 3 instead of 4 wedges.

46 52 58 is good for me better than 46 50 54 58 or 48 52 56 60

64 may be an option for specials courses or conditions , rarely in north of France

I’ve gone old J day route. My set pw is bent strong to 44 and my vokey is 48. Then I’ve added 54 58. The 48 is very versatile and provides better full & 3/4 gapping in a crucial area of the bag.

Personally I can make due with 56-60, 55-59 etc for chipping/pitching and make it work. But I need a wedge at 48-50* cause I see that yardage all the time.

9i: 155

P: 142

48: 128

This set-up was a great move for me allowing me to dump 1of 4 wedges (including PW), opens slot for driving iron in my case, or whatever you may choose...a hybrid, 5 wood, etc

i think that if i was going to pull a club it would be the 4 irons. That is the club that i hit the least. i like hitting 3 irons on short par 4s and holes i need placement. then i can carry 46, 50, 56, 60 wedges.

I've thought about it, but it'd make 13 clubs for me. I have no need for anything on the long end of the bag...I don't trust fairway woods, so I plug my driver-3i gap with a 2h. In all of 2017, I can't think of one instance where I've really needed something between the driver and hybrid. So for me, it makes more sense to have more wedges.
