How many new courses this year?

Recommended Posts

Eight new ones for me this year, all in Scotland. The best among them was Crail (Balcomie), with Gleneagles (King's) a close second.

I played 104 rounds on 84 different courses in 8 states in 2017 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Arizona, Florida, California, Nevada, and Utah), compared to 81 different courses last year. Of those, 61 were first time visits, 6 more than in 2016. I've now played 431 different courses. The highlight of the year was my 400th course, Pebble Beach.

Bay Point GC Meadows, Bay Point GC Nicklaus, Regatta Bay GC, Windswept Dunes, Raven GC at Sandestin, Burnt Pine GC at Sandestin, Celebration GC, The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes, ChampionsGate CC, Falcons Fire GC, Mission Inn El Campeon, RedTail, Twin Orchard CC, Village Green of Mundelein, University Park GC, Rock Hollow GC, The Trophy Club, Battle Ground GC, Birck Boilermaker GC Kampen, Birck Boilermaker GC Ackerman, Coyote Crossing, Bartlett Hills GC, Flossmoor CC, Bloomingdale GC, Whitetail Ridge GC, Half Moon Bay Old, Half Moon Bay Ocean, Pasatiempo, Poppy Hills, Spyglass Hill, The Links at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, TPC Harding Park, Presidio, Paw Paw Lake GC, Silver Ridge GC, Leslie Park GC, University of Michigan GC, Moose Ridge, Washtenaw GC, Eagle Crest GC, Tamarack GC, Casablanca, Wolf Creek GC, Coyote Springs, Conestoga GC, Sand Hollow, Sky Mountain GC, Cardinal Creek, Oak Creek GC, Pelican Hill South, Pelican Hill North, The Crossings at Carlsbad, La Costa Champions, Aviara GC, Arrowood GC, Raven GC, Whirlwind Devils Claw, Camelback GC Ambiente, The Legacy GC, Wickenburg Ranch

In 2018, I have trips booked to Phoenix (Jan), SoCal (Feb), and Alabama (Mar). I'll head out of town on the Memorial, Independence, and Labor Day weekends. I'm thinking about traveling to central Wisconsin (Sentry World and Sand Valley) in July, and Washington state in August. I'll finish the year with trips in mid-November and mid-December. Based on previous years, I should chalk up another 50 to 60 new courses this year.

I thought it was pretty nice -- I hit the ball pretty well that day off the tee, but it seemed like it could be a pretty challenging driving course. There's a good mix of par 3s - one that's quite short, one that's a mid-iron, and a couple longer ones. It was during a really warm stretch, and they had the greens a little shaggy to avoid them burning out, so that was the only bad part. Overall, a solid track, though -- I'd happily play it again (I'd like to play with Wieskopf one, too -- I generally like his designs).

What did you think of Meadowbrook?

I loved it. I never got to play it before the redesign, but there's a really detailed thread on Golf Club Atlas, that shows before & after, and it seems like it was a huge improvement. The group I played with included the architect who did the redesign (in another foursome) and it was interesting to talk to him and a guy from the committee that oversaw the redo about some of the things they did and the challenges they had. I'm not an architecture expert, but from what I know, you can see a lot of the greatest hits in green designs (Redan, Double Plateau, Biarritz, etc.), and it's cool to see that, and to see how you can introduce elements of challenge on a hole that aren't hazards. It's 2 miles from my office, and I'd love to be able to join, but it's really the only good private option in the immediate area, and it's priced accordingly (and I think they're full, anyway).

New courses that I can remember:

Pine Valley

Merion

Oakmont

Eastlake

Cherry Hills

Calusa Pines

Streamsong Black

Already booked for 2018

Seminole - Feb

Jupiter Hills - Feb

Hammock Beach Ocean Course - Jan

Hammock Beach Conservatory - Jan

Adena Golf & CC - Jan

Gasparilla - Feb

Hawktree - May

Links of North Dakota - May

Palmetto Club - April

Cypress Point - May

Monterey Peninsula - May

Pasiatempo- May

Blue Mound - Summer

I just started my golf planning a week ago and a lot of it revolves around the projects I have kicking off around the country- courses will certainly be added in the areas of Chicago, Milwaukee, Dallas, and the states of Georgia, Nebraska and North Carolina. Should be a good year.

Where are you going to play in Nebraska?

Nebraska hinges on two things:

1) Sand Hills: it’s the one course that would make me go to Nebraska no matter what. Summer or Fall 2018.

2) I have a project we are pursuing in Lincoln for work. If the project takes me to Nebraska and I can’t get on Sand Hills, then I will pursue Dismal River and Wild Horse for sure.

Cool. Good luck. If you are in Lincoln make sure to check out Quarry Oaks. Just 20-25 miles east of Lincoln, perched up above the Platte river. My favorite course in Nebraska.

I played Quarry Oakes maybe 8 years ago. Very nice course, it kind of reminded me of Amanda Colonies in Iowa.

I just added two new courses to my year. In March I have a conference in Houston so I added the #1 and #3 ranked courses in the state of Texas:

Whispering Pines and Bluejack National.

I am so excited to play these two courses.

The season is still not quite finished for me, as I have a Florida trip in mid-December planned. If the trip goes off without a hitch, I'll finish the season with at least 103 rounds on 88 different courses. Of those, 61 will be new courses, and my total will be up to 491 courses. The highlights this year include Chambers Bay, Sand Valley (Mammoth Dunes and Sand Valley), Torrey Pines South, and (hopefully) TPC Sawgrass in three weeks.

I'll be playing St Andrew's Old Course next April, and it should be my 500th course.

Can't do it. Just not possible.

But this year I played more than two new courses (ok, just barely more) so I have a reason to start the thread!

It s the highlight of my life (yes, I lead a sad existence)! I promise to start it on time.

I played 11 new courses in 2018.

Morroco : Mazagan

Spain : Finca Cortesin, Sotogrande

Scotland : North Berwick, Turnberry Ailsa, Royal Troon, Western Gailes, Prestwick, Castle Stuart, Royal Dornoch, Nairn

It's fairly in line with my historical records (average of 10 new courses per year since 2005).
