Same wedge finish, different light!

Wow, that finish looks much darker in that light. Thanks for posting.

How does the overall size of the SM7 compare to the SM6? I've read somewhere that the 7s are a little larger overall... maybe even closer to the 5s than the 6s. What are your thoughts?

Half the clubs, twice the fun!

the only time I’ve ever seen glare is opening up the face at the end of our season here in ny. I could definitely deal with it. They real question is why no raw or oil can available. Super disappointed about that.

Vokey has no incentive to offer Raw as a standard option during releases. They sell through Wedgeworks for a higher price and people continue to flock there and buy them. They can maximize profits by selling special order Raw wedges because "that's what the pros play"

Genius marketing. Crappy consumer relations since that's what everyone has been screaming for year after year.

You’ll never see a retail raw wedge because the average consumer sees a rusted wedge as a bad thing,

^^^This! The "average" golfer won't want rust, they won't understand that it's not a bad thing and the "average" golfer is the majority here. We WRXer's who like the raw wedge finish make up a small percentage of the millions of people who play golf each year.

Titleist is wise to only offer them through wedge works. This way they can still offer this finish to those who are looking for it, and they do make more money...smart business decision.

I would not have a problem with this but I’m LH and the only raw wedges offered are m grinds and 54-60 degree. Take my money please. Oh I can’t get what I want anyways. Ok thanks but no thanks.

I don't want rust. I want the best feel possible from a cast wedge!

I totally understand, but coming from someone who has Raw wedges, they will rust....FAST. My current set I got back in July and didn't play a whole lot with and they are already rusty. Now I like that, I love how they look and feel, but most people won't understand why a 6 month old wedge has rust spots. This affect is magnified if you play in Florida or other southern Coastal areas because of the soil they have there.

Ok guys. I am late to the party. So there is a way to get the SM6's to have a rust or "raw" looking finish? Is this only obtainable with the black wedge? And how is it done or what is the process? Thanks!

How is it the highest bounce but "advertised" as 4* ? Ie, playable vs measured... what's the difference? I understand the shape of the sole and grind affects playable bounce, but how does it go from 4* which is very low to being measured as the highest?

Fair question, anyone?

I'm not a wedge expert by any means and I don't know the math to support what I'm saying, but my understanding is that "effective" bounce basically equates to how the actual measured bounce (meaning the angle of the grind from the leading edge to the "highest" point of the sole) interacts with the width of the sole. So if you took a K grind style wedge and an L grind style wedge and designed them to both have measured bounce of 5*, the K grind would still play like it had a lot more bounce than the L grind because of all the trailing edge/heel/toe relief ground into the L grind. The way that I think about it is there is literally more sole to bounce on the ground with the K grind than the L grind, which makes sense if you just look at the two of them side by side.

My understanding is that the bounce numbers that Vokey calls out on wedges is the effective bounce - so the mix of the measured bounce mixed with the width of the sole. I first read about this when I bought a V-Grind, which I read at the time had the highest measured bounce of all of the Vokey wedges, even though it only played to an effective bounce of 10 (in the 60 degree option). The reason for this is that the measured bounce is very "short" if you will, as everything on the sole past about 25% back from the leading edge is cut away. So there's quick bounce there to resist initial digging, but shortly thereafter, there's nothing. As a result, I found that wedge to dig quite a bit for me, which was not at all what I expected. I have since learned that I play much better with fuller grinds like the F and K. I just recently swapped out my K grind 60 for an S grind, which feels more to me like an F grind, but offers a little trailing edge relief to help me hit flop shots.

There's probably tremendous gaps of knowledge in what I'm reporting, but I think it's generally headed the right direction. At the end of the day, it just comes down to trying all of them and figuring out which suits you best. Just look at the wide variety of grinds in play on the PGA tour...obviously there's no such thing as one size fits all with a wedge grind.

Here are my initial thoughts on the wedges I got today.

They look absolutely amazing. They are a smaller, more compact shape than the SM6 and a little less long in the blade length as well. And a little less tall.

I had my builder spec them to me and went with the Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Onyx X100 in gap and S400 in sand and lob. D4 in the gap and D6 in the sand and lob.

I ended up getting the following set of three:

F grind 50-12

S grind 54-10

D grind 58-12

I have a relatively steep angle of attack and I benefit from higher bounce in my wedges.

I took them to my local municipal course and was hitting off newer mats with the usual crappy range balls. I have to say I was very impressed. I have been playing a mixed bag of wedges and these ones just felt really good. Full shots off the gap wedge was solid and felt good off the face. I could change the trajectory of the ball flight and they felt good.

I hit shots to flags at 74 y, 121 y and back to 50 y. I think the fact that they are brand new and with super fresh grooves really were a big contributing factor, but they had some good bite and spin back even though the range has been freshly rained on. I started with the S 54-10 and worked shots from less than 100 yds. Went to the D 58-12 and was still hitting all kinds of shots to the 74 yard flag. Tried going at the 121 yard flag with the F 50-12 and it was good.

I probably hit about a large bucket of balls and hit other clubs as well. Went to the short game green and hit some short little chips with the D 58-12 and it felt good.

That is the end of the review so far, I have a round tomorrow and will have them in play.

Thanks for reading!

Congrats on the new wedges. They look really good :-) Curious as to why you went with the S grind in 10 degrees for your 54 considering your 50 and 58 are higher bounce.

I am just used to the bounce interaction it. I have a M grind in a SM6 that is 54-08 and I bent it weak 1º too.

You’ll never see a retail raw wedge because the average consumer sees a rusted wedge as a bad thing,

When I was no0b I Thought this. I was like ew, why would i want thing ugly looking rust bucket. Then I got raw wedges for the hell of hit... let them rust... then I became a believer.

I'll be dipping these pups in some CLR. Just not sure if once the finish is removed off that grey-ish color if it'll still reflect sun. Swear my old chrome'd MD2's almost turned me blind. Even my satin Cobra's which weren't chrome'd still could reflect decent sunlight if the angles were right. Really want a dark finish that's as raw/bland as possible..
