It's so you can inject your own speed foam into the head. They don't want to get sued for it.

G700 is not a 790 competitor. They are completely different types of clubs. Only similarity is they both have a closed cavity in the back.

The 790s could be argued as a GI iron being the most forgiving in the "players" P lineup. They're both hollow head, minus the foam. They both have thin faces for increase ball speed. They both have some meat to them without being shovels. They're both "long" irons with their lofts.

 

I wouldn't classify them as "completely different".

Have you seen 790's? They are the size of i200. G700 are in a totally different class: larger, more offset, longer shafts, thicker topline, fatter sole.

 

790's are players irons with some help, G700 are full on SGI irons.

Titleist showed that there is a market for driving iron bodies made into a full set with the TMBs. When Ernie Els got the X-Utility Prototype before the Open that he won in 2012, he asked Cleveland or whoever the tour guy was for Callaway where the rest of the set was. So it would seem that some tour pros would be in favor of the continuation of the driving iron into the short irons.

 

I looked at the lofts for the G700 set and chuckled at how strong the lofts were (especially the "power spec" lofts), but I do accept that they are SGI irons, ultimately.

Not a bad thought. Titleist did this with 712u into similar TMB which became a whole set so you never know.

Totally agree. Prob one of the best looking SGI’s ever made. The fact that many are confused just based on looks (with no reference to size) that it may be a players iron says a lot about how well ping did aesthetically with this iron.
