Hi... was on the road last week, so wasn't able to answer some of your questions... The reason for the TPU formula on the MTB RED is due to the performance required.. the main focus of this ball was to create a low driver spin, but add spin to the mid irons or approach shots to the greens... to do this, we needed to add a spin layer inside the ball, and make the urethane cover thicker. The cast urethane cover is great to cast thin, but the issue with cast is that the thicker it gets, to slower in ball speed it gets... so when more spin is needed, thicker urethane is used, and TPU covers are faster in speed.. so end result is you get the spin needed, and do not lose speed....the second added benefit is that this cover technology allows yellow to made much easier, so covers both white and yellow models....both covers will be very durable and testing has shown that the desired performance was achieved... if unsure which model is for you, we do recommend trying the test pack, which is same price and has 2 sleeves of each model to allow a good test period...

Test Pack ordered. Can't wait to put these through their paces. I'm guessing Black will beat Red for me, but it will be fun looking for real world differences between the two.

Thanks so much, as usual, for helping out us laymen with the tutorial on ball design. I find this stuff fascinating and I know a lot of others do too.

Just a thought. This topic should be merged to the main Snell ball one.

Why? There are hundreds of Titleist threads. Big threads are unwieldy.

I was hoping this Red would have 360 dimples! What do you do to the dimple patterns for holding the line in the wind better?

Dean, i just wanta say, i had called your cust service twice in the last two days, one to order my Snell poker chips and to change my 6 dozen of blacks to 5 doz blacks and 1 doz reds....wow what customer service, i actually called and someone answered, no menus to go through, and both the women i spoke to were exceptional, wish remembered their names to commend them...cant wait for my blacks and reds to come...anxious to hit them

I would be interested to hear from Dean regarding MTB Black having the Cast Urethane cover and the MTB Red having the Thermoplastic Urethane. Is the use case performance wise going away from cast with the improved TPU formulas? Supposedly, TM/Titleist still use cast with everyone else (bridgestone/callaway/srixon) using TPU.

My understanding is that only TM, Titliest and Snell used the premium cast urethane covers and that all others used the TPU. Adding the TPU option allows for improved spin and color options. And the TPU apparently had improved a great deal on the recent past. Can't wait to try the trial pack when it arrives.

i do believe he knew the public wanted a yellow ball, it was easier to color a ball if it was TPU, as opposed to Cast...anyone correct me if i am wrong

Excited for the new ball!

I don't know if Dean will read this, but is there any reason we don't get the same discounts/deals as the guys in the U.S do?

Hello... the distributors we use to sell the balls run their regions with their separate plans.. the discounts we have on the balls here in the US are primarily due to reducing the year end inventory, and prepare for the launch of the new balls that are coming soon. As you can imagine, we carry quite a bit more inventory than the distributors. Most of them planned their business to liquidate what they had, and are also getting ready for the new golf balls... So volume in the US is the primary reason why you see these discounts... margins for the US are easier to do this versus margins in the other regions as well... hope this helps...

Where in Canada can I buy these?

this is correct.. the performance required on the TP RED (higher spin) calls for a thicker urethane cover, with is also easier to pigment into a yellow cover that was requested..

It only became a favorite after being marked down to $20-something a dozen.

Exactly. Just like a few years back the Lethal all of a sudden became "great" when TM was clearing them out in bulk packs of 20/50/144 balls at around $2/ball brand new on their website but had trouble selling them at their retail price point. The Penta TP5 and Lethal practice balls can still be purchased in bulk for under $15-18/dozen new on Ebay. Surprised more people aren't jumping on those deals as both the Penta TP5/Lethal balls were really good before they were heavily discounted by TM.

Ordered a sampler. My son and I will enjoy trying the two new balls. I'm guessing the MTB Black will be very good with my game. He's a little guy so the Red might suit him really well, we'll see. I noticed he is having some trouble getting approaches to stop. I think that softer Black will really cover some real estate off the tee... And, I like giving some business to the entrepreneur. Gotta love that.
