Triangle NC group

Recommended Posts

My regular playing buddies aren't much for golf trips. I am hoping to find some folks here that either have an existing group I can join or start a group. Not major trips, just weekend golf trips and the like. Let me know.

Patrick,
I play with a group of 10 or so all around the Raleigh/Pinehurst area. We range in age from 20's to 60's and handicaps from single digits to above 20. We do an annual 4 day event in Myrtle Beach and play several rounds throughout the year on weekends. We all play CGA and some other tours as well. If you are still looking, let me know.

Randy

Yep, have played with a lot of the am tours in the Raleigh area, CGA is probably the largest. I think there are usually around 80 - 100 golfers in most events, especially the individual events. The four ball events are held on Monday's so they are usually a bit smaller, but not much. They play from Wilmington to Winston Salem, and have almost all areas covered rather well. Events are reasonable, like $60 to $70 per tournament, prizes are pro shop gift certificates, and they are like most other tournaments....slow. They did make the individual tournaments 3 somes, so it does play a bit quicker, but when you have that many golfers on one course in a tournament, it is a 5 hour thing at the least.
They do a championship tournament at Pinehurst, one day for winners of individual events and one for winners of four ball events. This year I got to play both days and it was pretty fun, but cold and wet.
Hope to meet up with you soon.
Randy

I'm a CGA eClub member as of this year. Working on posting enough rounds for a handicap. I usually shoot in the 90s, would I be comfortable at the CGA individual tournaments?

I ended up playing with Randy a couple of times. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good fit. There were some guys playing in the group that fibbed a bit on their hdcp's and took the $$ every time. A bunch of supposed 25 caps shooting mid 80's.

I played 2 CGA events last year and had a great time. As long as you familiarize yourself with the rules, you will be fine. Post up if you decide to sign up for one. I am playing the one at Dormie Club in May.

I played in one 4 ball last year at lonnie pole which we won then injured my wrist and was out for 9 months. Was thinking of doing the 4 ball at the Governors Club course in next couple months. I just moved up to Wake Forest area last year from down near pinehurst and also looking for some people up this way to play.

Planning on playing Lonnie Poole 7/10 and Wildwood Green 7/17

Nice. I've played in both of those events before and I'm eyeing them up again this year.

As far as your earlier question about being a 90s shooter and feeling comfortable in those events ---- absolutely. There's an A flight and a B flight and the CGA tries to pair people together that have similar handicaps. So if you're a 16 handicap they aren't going to pair you with a 3 handicap. You'll be paired with guys in the 14-18 handicap range.

Check out the scores from the tournaments to get an idea of what to expect. They were at Whispering Pines last weekend and 10 of the 15 players in the B flight posted scores of 90+. Last year at Lonnie Poole there were scores of 100+. As long as you're up to speed on rules and tournament etiquette (keeping another player's card, order of play and what not) you'll be fine. The CGA does a great job with their tournaments. I would play in every one if I could. Good luck!

I played the event at dormie a couple of weeks ago. Course was playing pretty tough with the wind but still had a great time. CGA did a fantastic job(except for allowing the scores of two 20 hdcp players that posted a 75 gross, 57 net)

Oh man I've played all over the Pinehurst area and Dormie is by far my favorite track in the area by far! Did you love it?

Hey all, wanted to comment on here and see if anything ever came of this. I am in Raleigh and belong to wildwood. Would love to join a group this year. I do like playing all over the area in addition to playing my home course.

Don’t have a handicap but signing up for this year. Shoot high 80’s with the occasional low 80’s round when my driver is finding grass and not trees :)

Nothing really came from this. I did play with one of the groups mentioned in this thread a couple of times and, as another person eluded to, the ones winning the $ all had their "career" rounds that day. ;)

I mostly just play at Heritage and Hasentree when I get out.
