Titleist C16 Concept Driver Review vs. 915 D4

Well it finally came in the mail yesterday evening and I took it to the range first thing this morning. I went to a Titleist Thursday at TPC Tampa (very well run) on the first C16 day and hit both the irons and driver. As a scratch player who prefers a smaller looking blade iron I didn't much like the look of the irons but they felt amazing. As for the driver, that is a whole different story. To give some more background of myself I am a scratch player who plays in a couple tournaments every now and then. My average swing speed is around 107-109 and I am a very, very high spin player. My gamer before this was the Titleist 915 D4 which I put head to head today with the C16. Here is my review:

First Look:

At first glance, it is a very good looking driver to me. The sole is mostly silver with some black and grey. The weight bolt is clearly present toward the back of the sole. The C16 still uses the same SureFit hosel adapter that the 9 series drivers use. (Ignore the plastic film on the sole of the C16 near the face).

The crown is different from recent Titleist drivers. It is a satin-ish grey color with a black, red, and white C16 alignment icon and red and white accents around the crown. They parted with the normal black crown and arrow alignment icon.

Shape and Feel:

The C16 is 445cc (5cc smaller than the D4). Although they are similar in size, their shapes are different. The C16 is slightly shallower and longer than the deep faced D4. It seems to be a happy medium between the D3 and D4. The feel of the C16 is really unlike anything else. The first time I hit it I just started laughing because it felt so good. The head absorbs the impact so well but still gives you excellent feedback. The sound is a deeper punch in the gut sound compared to the D4's more high pitched little child screaming sound. Even on mishits the C16 maintains a consistent sound and feel through the ball.

Performance:

The only reason why I played the D4 was just because I was consistently hitting the most fairways with it. I didn't much like the sound, the feel was different, it wasn't even the longest, and even though it is a "low-spin" head, I still spun it in the 3000's (The Titleist fitter was perplexed at my numbers with it when being fitted at the TT). On Trackman with the D4, I was around the 3000's in spin like I said and carrying it an average of 250-260 with a total around 270-275. With the first hit with the C16 that had me laughing, spin was 2500 carrying 275 finishing at 294. This was also with my own Tour AD-DI 6x from my D4. After a few more hits I concluded that it was not a fluke because the numbers were consistently longer and better. And this was not some sporting good store launch monitor this was Trackman.

I was pleasantly surprised by the results from this driver. Since the irons are a bigger iron for a mid-handicapper I was expecting the driver to be more of a variation of the D2. But this is a lot more of a low-spin fairway destroyer. My launch was a little high with my DI 6 so I went for the Tour Ad-GT 6x. And on that note just to solve all of the confusion, THERE ARE NO SHAFT UP CHARGES. That goes for irons and driver. The stock shaft is a proprietary Kuro Kage constant weight shaft. I was not a fan of this because it plays at 45.5" and it can't be cut down since it's constant weight, and considering that I am 5' 7" I didn't want a driver that long.

One of the most important parts of this driver is the weight bolt on the sole. If you are familiar with the Nike Flex drivers, then you will be vaguely familiar with this. The difference is that instead of changing the CG for backspin, you can change it for side spin. The driver comes with a pouch that includes a wrench and a Draw/Fade 10g bolt. The Neutral Bolt will already be in the head. This step in fitting is very important. It can make a much bigger difference then you might think.

Conclusion:

To put it simply, if you have the money, get it. This is coming from someone who has literally hit every driver out there; this is the best driver in the world. $1000 is a lot of money to spend on a driver I know and it is hard to justify. However, this is the only driver I've ever hit that I could guarantee to improve your driving numbers. Thanks for reading!

Nice write up ping man ! What a club! Looks and sounds amazing! So you can get any shaft at no up charge or do they have a hand full to choose from?

If you go on Titleist's website and look at their custom shaft options you can pick any of those for no upcharge. The HZRDUS Black is already available and Yellow is on it's way.

Pingman4life, since your review is so good on C16, why are you selling them?

I just moved and couldn't afford to have that much money tied up in one driver

hmmm get this driver or wait and see if this design will be the 917 release coming soon

The titleist rep I spoke with said this is an independent driver and won't affect any forthcoming drivers but we'll see

Found this review really exciting until I saw the price - lol. Appreciate the write up though.

Now a couple of months later and with the new 917 making it's tour debut, do you still feel this way about the C16 driver?

I think Titleist completely ripped people off...unless you think getting something a year in advance is worth double!

917 looks exactly like the C, other than colors

I was super excited by this driver at first. I love the crown color and the rarity as well. I have recently switched to Titleist irons so I thought it would be awesome to game a cool Titleist driver as well. I have looked at many on Ebay but they are still too high at this point. Oh boy. Then I see pics of the upcoming 917. What in the world???? There are obvious design characteristics from the c16. At first I thought the c16 tech would show up in their Japan only line. The VG line has been solid. No,they took the C16 design and used it for the upcoming 917. I will say this,if you bought a c16 to sell for profit (many on Ebay are $1300 still in the plastic?) then you had better dump it quick. Once the 917 hits the stores the c16 owners will see a crazy drop in interest from anyone. i do not buy any golf club to keep in a box in my closet. Upside is the c16 will probably be available at less than half the original price. i think its a very cool looking club but I will never understand Titleist on this one.

Agree with the comments about the C16 being devalued by the 917 release.

I actually messaged the OP about his views now and he was kind enough to give his current insights which I thin are worth sharing.

I encouraged him to post up but in a nutshell he still thinks the C16 is a fantastic driver. He is a high spin player who spun his D4 over 4000 rpm whereas the C16 was low 3000 rpm. However he couldn't justify the price (or depreciation I'm guessnig) so he's now playing an XR16 Sub Zero with a Black Tie and that's working well.

Hopefully he doesn't mind me quoting our conversation ;)

The 917 is similar to the C16 certainly, but the materials are different with the C16 being more high end. Is the difference noticeable? Probably not to the common man, but only time will tell. Agree that the C16 will depreciate regardless.

As for D4 versus C16...I played the D4 for about a year and a half and the C16 for the past month or so. For me the biggest difference has been forgiveness. Mishits on the C16 do not experience the same loss in distance nor travel as far offline. I honestly think that the D4 is longer when hit on the screws, but I have not got on a monitor recently and frankly have not been swinging the driver well of late.
