How long have you been playing golf and $ spent estimate so far?

I have been playing golf approximately twenty-five years. How much spent on playing? I can't or won't even venture a guess. When I knew my annual cost of the game it was when CC & golf-related expenses were deductible on the corporate tax form. When that stopped, I quit looking at costs. As for what I might spend the money on, Aston Martin DB 11 sounds good. :) :beach:

Started in 2015, played a few games then stopped. Started again early 2017, again played a few games then stopped until Nov 2017 when my Dad started getting back into it. My 1st set was $100 off our local auction site, they were terrible and probably the wrong size for be but I wasn't fussed as I was a beginner. Green fee wise, probably less than $1000.

Then my Dad bought me a new set of Callaway's with me having to promise to play more often. I've played more over the last 2 months than I ever have.

Curiosity question about how long you have been playing golf and the money spent so far total in your golf life total as it's going to be a guess, or how much do you spend per year on average?

Finally, what might you have bought with that money on instead, depending on how long you've been playing? A smartphone, a new car, a new house, your own island?

One can NOT equate the money spent on golf Vs. buying something else.

I've been playing this crazy game for 25 years, I could be living very comfortable right now if I didn't use the money spent for golf!!!!!, but I would not change anything!!!!, golf has opened many doors and gave me so many life and business opportunities, not to mention the amazing friendships that have been forged through this game that otherwise wouldn't have been possible...

Since I was 2 years old.

Dad/parents paid for clubs/green fees/tournament fees until I was about 21-22. Got a country club membership at my high school's home course once I graduated. Would take classes at a local community college in the AM, then go out and play 18 in the afternoon. 36 on days I didn't have class.

Once I moved out of my parents house, I had a hard time adjusting to real life. Rent, car payments, etc. So my golfing declined to under 10 rounds a year. But the past 3 years I've gotten a much nicer paying job, and a rejuvenated interest in the sport. No idea how much I've spent, but I usually play Saturday & Sunday every weekend from March-October. 4-5 times a month in the winter months. Usually just do whatever is cheapest on GolfNow. I don't like spending more than $40 for a round of golf.

In NZD...

Been hacking consistently for say 5 years now. Member for 3 years, so that's about $1.2k pa. Before that let's say $30 every 2 weeks or so on average in green fees so that's about $5k.

First set of clubs were $1.5k which I've since sold for $800 to fund a new set for $4.5k (rounded up cos I've bought 2 putters since) so that's $5,200.

Balls are $100 every quarter for the last 3 years (before that I pretty much used second hand balls, usually found in hazards until I lost them so cost IMO was negligible) so $1,200.

Lessons probably in the vicinity of $600.

I've left out tees and gloves cos I don't actually remember and clothes since I can wear them everywhere and they're not golf specific. So total in 5 years I've spent about $12k.

Why on earth did I just undertake this exercise :-(

I didn't get real serious till 4 years ago, in that time I've bought 2 new drivers. Upgraded an 15 year old set of irons, 5 new wedges, new putter. Regriped everything at lest twice. Built a driving range in the garage, visit a Dome or Simulator once a week. Gone from a 28 to a 17hcp. It's like I'm reliving my youth except I'm not chasing girls, I'm chasing golf balls.

Played 78 rounds last year, and after all the side games I'm .75s ahead. :fan_1:

I did keep track of that......

How much I've spent don't care :swoon:

I can only attest to the last 3 years, I've started playing in 15-20+ tournaments throughout the year in state and local amateur events. I've been keeping a spreadsheet to track money spent on entry fees+expenses and winnings.

2015-2017: In terms of money spent to enter tournaments and related expenses = approx $9500-$10,000. That doesn't include my monthly dues for the club I'm a member at to practice and play on the regular. On the flip side I've made approx $8400 in cash and credit from the same time period. So if over three years of tournament play the net is $1500-$1600 in the hole I think I've done pretty well.

this will be my 5th full year. Including yearly membership of 2200, 2 sets of clubs (new and used), used Ezgo RXV, $1000 worth of lessons at Golftec, no travel to speak of*, about $18,000.

A few extra thoughts: * if someone is an avid golfer and the travel to golf, they would include this as a golf expense. If you otherwise just travel with family and while you are there just happen to have a round of golf, you would not call this a golf expense, but vacation.

If I just do a little math over the course of one year: Let's say it is $3000 a year, and I do another 70 rounds or so, ( I still work full time) assuming that for every round I do 1 hour at the range, that works out to $8.57 an hour. That is pretty cheap entertainment considering.

Now the retired guy across the street did twice as many as this, so he is golfing for under $5 an hour. That is less than the cost of going to the movies.

Last thought, how many years does golf add to your life? How much is this worth?

Been playing for 50-years and really have no clue, except it's allot. A few years ago I pulled all my Edwin Watts receipts for about an 18-month period, $10K. Sounds stupid when looking at them, but whatever, this is what I do, play golf 5 days a week. Worked many years and am now retired, so I have time others don't.

Lets see, new equipment, eBay equipment, course membership, visiting local courses fees, traveling green fees, motels, food, could never put it all together. But, I do not have a boat, nor a pool, my wife and I like to play golf.

I have been playing a long time and wouldn't want to put a figure to it. Basically 1% to 12% of my day job income depending on how well the current year and previous years were. During my college years it wasn't much and the past few it has pushed that 12% mark.

If I wanted to look at something where I spent the most amount of money and wonder what could have been done with that money instead it would be taxes.

I first started playing in 1968 so it would be impossible to even come up with a ballpark guess on the money I’ve invested in this passion. But other than guns and reloading it’s my only selfish hobby. Other diversions like ATV’s and horses are family activities.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my (large) golf related stash for what I told her I paid for it.

Since I was 7 or 8, about 40+ years and all things considered haven't spent that much. My family was members of the local club until I went to college, and I was a member at a club for about 18 months a few years ago. I worked at courses during and briefly after college, so most of my golf then was free. I have a young son now, so I rarely play, and when I do, it's usually just 9 holes with him. I buy new irons about once a decade and a driver or FW about twice a decade.

I started playing regularly in the summer of 1964, late grade school. (I was first golfer in my immediate family.) Have continued to play except for about three stretched when I just couldn't get much in.

How much money? I haven't got any idea.

What else could I have bought with the money? Doesn't apply to me. I set aside discretionary money to use for golf; it's not like we went hungry so I could play.

This is the first 'feel bad' thread I've come across...

Playing for 10 years. Spent $150,000 on CC membership and my wife left me for the head pro; she's got the Bentley and a 3 h/c, I'm living in a cold water flat and can't break 90 at the local muni.

No one's going to admit they spent $100k playing bogey golf for 20 years - it sounds weird and complicates divorce settlements (unless you live in Myrtle Beach, in which case golfers are automatically awarded greens fees and custody of the cart girl).
