Big Moss Outdoor Target & Putting Green ?

Recommended Posts

Thanks to a recommendation from Browns71213, I checked out Golfgearbox.com , and discovered that they offer a Big Moss outdoor green in 2 sizes, a 6 x 12@ $599, and a 6 x 15 @ $699. They claim it stimps at 12 and can receive short pitch shots. This would be a great addition to our home/business landscape project coming up in the spring...If I can slip it by the goalie : mslobstah :) They even offer larger custom version @ X x12ft. Has anyone here seen one of these, better yet, tried one ? There is nothing at BigMoss.com about them at all. I assume they are flat greens without the usual incline at the hole. Thanks for any and all imput !

Larry

EDIT : Big Moss does have them at their site.

I've got a Big Moss Commander putting green, which is built for outdoor use (although I have mine inside). If it is made out of the same material, it looks as if it would be able to weather well. It putts very nicely. Might be worth calling Big Moss to see if it is the same composition of material.

I would think on an install that's as large as your contemplating, you would be well served to do a bit of prep work to make sure the ground won't have any really tooky breaks, and you probably would want it to drain well. As far as accepting chips, I have no experience but I don't think it's going to be quite as receptive as an actual green, though perhaps with a sand foundation it may get close . But it would still be a lot better and far more entertaining than than just having grass!

If you get it, be sure to post pictures.

I just called and talked to Tony at Big Moss. They are flat, and they have about 1/4 inch padding. He said the putting is just like their other products, and chipping / pitching aspect is OK, but not like you would find with infill green$$. A custom 12 x 15 would run about $800, with additional $350 for shipping it here to Maine. He recommended getting a landscaper to help prep the area properly, and that might run another $600 or so, and I have a golf buddy in the business. All told, I could be up and running for under 2K...I can put up with some pitching issues as a trade off for not spending 6K on the green...which would render it a nonstarter per the goalie ! He also said that the almost golf balls will react more realistically, but I'm afraid that using them would affect my touch.

If "almost golf balls" means the plastic practice ball they toss in with the order, then in my opinion it's not worth using. It will not give you the same feedback as an ordinary ball, and I suspect you would end up having a different tempo than you would if you practiced with real balls.

Having said that, having a maintenance - free chipping area you can hit to that will react within a magnitude of a real green would be great. You could dial in your direction and carry distances for sure, then adjust for any differences in spin and roll.

I say do it. Post pictures.

I will most definitely post pics if I do it, but it wont be until April at the earliest and that depends on what the wife agrees to. I'm retired, but she is a pretty successful fine artist, and our home biz is a gallery. She absolutely hates waiting around in the gallery for customers to stop in, and frequently asks me to watch it for her. This is my IN to add it to a fairly large landscaping project that we already have planned. " Sure honey, I'll watch the place this afternoon" as I reach for my Anser and a wedge ! :) We employ a very laid back approach to sales anyway...usually we just let them look around by themselves while we busy ourselves doing other tasks. She may think a putting green is a bridge too far, but she did allow me to set up my Net Return out back, so there is hope.

I also got an email from Dave at Golfgearbox with a slightly higher quote. Two things of interest:

First, he offered that other than crushed stone, you can separately purchase 3 different solid sub bases : Syn Lawn, ProPutt, and Ultra Base, a sister company of Tour Links. I don't know the prices, but I imagine they aren't cheap, but you can swap out different turfs if you want to upgrade.

Here is a video he sent me reviewing all three :

Secondly, The bulk turf they sell is the Commander Turf, same as the Big Moss pre-fab greens

EDIT: fixed broken link
