Morning Drive...What Happened?

Bailey is pretty bad...she doesn't strike me as someone who has too many thoughts going on upstairs aside from what dress she will wear for the next show...At least Lauren seems like a fun and cool girl who actually has some golf skills. I like Paige...I know she stumbles on her words a lot and certainly can't hit a darn thing in the simulator but I think she does make some really good points and at least has some insight. They all have some credentials actually. Gary was a golf pro, Rhymer on tour, Paige mini tours and some LPGA events, Damron, Trevor, etc. The only ones who don't are Damon and Bailey and it shows. Remember a few years ago when Damon was always trying to get tips from pros they hosted and made every question about how to fix his swing? lol

Driver: Sim2 with Ventus Blue 6x

58*: New Level Golf SPN Forged M Grind
Putter: Toulon San Diego

Their speed golf attempt on the simulator this morning was hilariously bad.

YEP...RDD seriously? Not to get too "inside baseball", but it seems to me like perhaps the problem is they have producer(s) who are just plain incompetent. During the end of that fiasco this morning trying to speed golf the par 5, cringe worthy to be sure. All it needed was a Ron Burgundy voice over.

The look on Lauren Thompson's face as the show faded to black said it all (she was pissed as the little British guy upstaged her and closed out the show).

The station has come a loooong way from the insightful and knowledgeable gravitas of Peter Kessler to what we just witnessed.

Wonder what format the PGA Channel will use?

Yep....seriously. Ball has to get in the hole. And producers are incredibly good. Until I was on the show I had no idea how much goes into it.

Morning Drive has no business being on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings, when there are usually no tournaments going on. You can only fill so much time in a week talking about what's going on in the pro tour.

Kinda going off on a tangent here, but I long for the "good ole days" of Golf Channel when a good share of their programming opposite of live golf coverage was instruction-based. Comcast/NBC have tried too hard to make Golf Channel "mainstream" like ESPN or Fox Sports, when golf is still a niche sport that is really viewed by only a certain segment of the sporting population. Its ridiculous that Golf Channel actually spends prime-time viewing hours on golf movies.

If you're not showing live golf, most hardcore golf fans would appreciate more instruction based programming with established players, coaches, etc. Many players and coaches would gladly do it...especially lesser known or younger pros trying to gain exposure. In the old days of the Golf Channel, Golf Channel Academy used to be a call-in show with players and teachers....the Tiger/Butch Harmon episode can be found on YouTube and is thoroughly entertaining still years later.

The Skill Code with Cameron McCormick is a good start. They need more of that type of programming, and less of programs like Morning Drive, especially on non-tournament days.

RDD...since you have insight, what is going on there? How has it gotten so far off from what it was? Arnold would turn over in his grave if he saw the current product there. So much better when he was around...and it’s really not even close.

I respectfully disagree on all counts. MD is meant to be a show where we can cover any aspect of golf, notjust live golf, instruction etc. Also, Mr Palmer was a big fan ofGokf Channel.

Of course he was a fan...I’m more talking about what it’s become.

It was supposed to be...

Is that something known for certain or speculation?

If it was supposed to be bad I wouldn’t think they would have put up the time they were trying to beat.

Confirmed. I hit the third shot. We knew we couldn’t break the record so we didn’t treat it very seriously.

See the first post...and many of the ones after. It’s become a weird combination of serious/complete mess. I’m not saying this stuff for the sake of ripping on the show, I want to see golf (and golf on TV) succeed. But, since the NBC/Comcast purchase, the personalities have changed and the show has veered into caricature of ESPN.

I know it was, Robert. I wasn't bashing it. Hell, I defended the show earlier in the thread. I watch you guys nearly every morning.

What I said earlier... "They deserve a break. I can't imagine how hard it is to fill two hours every morning about to talk about golf. It can't be easy. There's only so much content to draw from."

Got it. And you’re right. 2 hours of golf content a day is a lot and it takes whole team to fill it. That’s why we mix up Recaps, instruction, travel, weather etc. It keeps us on our toes.

Dude- I really like you, but take a step back and think about Charles Howell III......the nicest, most sincere "pro's pro" there is. He gave a good grown up segment, and then agreed to participate in the "hit the net" game.....if I am his agent, I am on the phone with mgmnt. pissed. The "shats & giggles" routine is NOT in keeping with my client's well crafted professional image/demeanor.

Take a look at Lauren Thompson's facial expression the last 20 seconds....clearly the shtick wasn't planned. She is giving the "side eye" for certain. What would a lucid Arnie circa 2000 say about that?

Dude-you’re so far off base. Charles is a good friend and I know he loved it and so did LT. Any segment where we can be spontaneous and unscripted is welcome by everyone in studio. Charles was aware of everything before all segments started.

O.K.- I am obviously speculating about CHIII (my favorite PERSON on tour). Not speculating about LT.

I agree. I think that it’s cool that he’s on here. Who knows, maybe some of the concerns and ideas expressed here will get back to those in charge.
