GTT2: what is your understanding of a proper golf swing?

If you're even chasing a "golf swing" -- as if there's this "entity" out there known as a "golf swing" that people can acquire like a television -- you're already lost.

...

To me, it's not complicated. It's just time consuming.

i like this, but it doesn't really answer the question.

Any swing that allows you to hit the ball with consistent path, face, strike, and speed. So many different pieces that match up to create various tendencies. It's a big puzzle.

i like this too, but it doesn't really answer the question with any specificity.

in the simplest terms that you can muster, how do we get from here:

rory-top.png

to here:

rory-impact.png

full view:

rory.jpg

a fun slider for rory's swing:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3yw7ty

obviously, i know i don't have rory's flexibility, strength, speed, or bank account. all that's a given. i'm just looking to understand how it can be done. i know you're supposed to keep your head behind the ball and maintain secondary tilt/spine angle... but how does the club "get there" on a downward arc bottoming out past the ball with a shallow path with the hands leading*? wouldn't you end up hitting behind the ball or just at it and the ground at the same time?

in essence, in layman's terms, how do you move that arc forward?

This has always been a major issue for me, especially with driver. So much so that I've just given up. Whenever I actively try to keep my head behind the ball in an attempt to increase my launch angle, 99.9% of the time I'm finishing so off balance it's ridiculous. I know you're supposed to hit up on it, but I've never managed a swing feeling that's given me any consistent results.

I guess it might be a matter of perspective, but to me (strictly speaking of my good drives/shots) it's almost always seemed like I have a low/mid traj.

Anyway, I hit it better when I don't think about it.

You're not in that position at the top, so it doesn't matter if somebody comes in here with a dead nuts perfect explanation of how he goes from the top to impact. It probably won't mean diddly in regards to your game.

no, i know that. i'm talking in general, as a holistic concept. just using rory as a model, cause siegel posted a pretty picture.

in your mind, using small words for my benefit, how is the golf swing supposed to work?

if there's a youtube out there you'd recommend, i'd be happy to watch it.

"How do you move the arc forward" is a different question from "what is your understanding of a proper golf swing"?

FTR, I bought Adam Young's video series The Strike Plan this winter. Basically the entire thing is about moving the arc around, how the pros shallow out, where the bottom of the swing should be, etc etc.

But, if you want to connect where the arc bottoms out with a "proper" golf swing. . .there's several factors, but, the bottom of the arc is strongly related to where the front shoulder is in space. The front shoulder is strongly connected to where your center of gravity is. And, your center of gravity moves as your weight goes from back foot at the top to front foot at the bottom.

And you're not going to move it forward if you don't move it back first, and THAT, sonny, is from books and teachers and the dirt.

Swing back, then swing through.

I don't really know how to answer.

I've read countless books, and articles. I've watched tons of golf swings, from awful to incredible. I've hit tons of golf balls. All that, and it's still a fraction of what any decent teacher has consumed in their research. Not to mention all the hours of lessons they've given, putting that research to work. And yet learning proficiency in golf is still difficult.

If you're looking for a simple answer, I don't think there is one. The answers lie in your journey to thing #400, as City would say.

If I thought about the golf swing as much as you guys I'd be frozen. I literally try to not to think about any more than 1 thought out there. And that thought is, "what am I eating after I'm done playing?"

i bought some foot spray. it's totally messed me up.

every ball mark: toeside. every divot: starts behind (bad side of) the line.

this is on 1/2 - 3/4 shots.

progressively worse on fuller swings.

hence, me asking in here.

i'll look at the strike plan, thanks mark.

Eagle

Film yourself down the line then on the side. ..slow mo.

You should be able to pick apart your own swing.

Could be simply over the top.. coming too flat, etc.

City, what'd you think of the video? We talked about the Practice Manual, which is sitting on my book shelf mostly unread. I liked his ideas, but not the delivery in the book.

Oh, yeah, lots of good ideas, Except instead of just setting up a stationary camera and writing his own copy like he did for the book, he brought in a team of scribes, led by William Goldman to draw up a treatment. They had a finished document, but they brought in Rian Johnson as a consultant to "punch up the script" and make it more relatable to millennials.

Spielberg directed the videos, and they're noteworthy because it's the first time he's worked with Roger Deakins as Cinematographer since Schindler's List.

Industrial Light and Magic put the finishing touches on the graphics. Some say Adam Young should have gotten a nod for Best Actor in a Leading Role, but it's up for an Oscar in Original Screenplay and Production Design, so it's got that going for it. Which is nice.

Ok, seriously. . .I got it when I was home sick for 2 or 3 days in January and I was jonesing for some golf geekery. I think they're great ideas and I'll probably revisit the videos in the future. I already feel like getting examples on video of ball strikes and graphic demonstrations of the concepts was pretty helpful.

I mean, it's a couple hours of video about basically how to hit a ball with a descending blow before the low point. It's probably one of the most important ideas in golf, so I think it's worth it to be schooled in it. He provides examples of drills that I think are beneficial.

The sunken space. The updside down.

It is for me. Less thinking means better swinging.

Are you trying to kick the ball? That might explain part of the problem. Weirdo.

This is going to get into me vs. the world territory, but for something like hitting it near the toe, my remedy is "try to hit it off the heel". If you think you're hitting the center of the face and you're hitting the toe, then trying to hit with the heel should get you to the center of the face. This is my conception of the Adam Young philosophy.

Someone else will tell you "stand closer to the ball". This the "robot" philosophy of golf.

Someone else will tell you, "oh, this part of your body is here at this point in the swing, and it should be in this other place." That's the most traditional form of golf help. And, I don't poo-poo it. I just think it's overdone.

I guarantee if you can swing a club that COMPLETELY MISSES the ball outside the ball that you can move your impact position from the toe to the center just through trying.

Adam Young might prescribe two drills for work on this. . .

1) Take a normal address position and TRY to hit the ball with the toe, with the heel, and with the center. Just TRY to move your impact position around. It's not easy. We have a lot of ingrained stuff, but you can do it.

2) Take ABNORMAL address positions and try to hit the ball with the center of the face. Line up with the heel at the ball. Line up with the toe at the ball. Sole the club a foot behind the ball. Hover the club a foot over the ball. Now, swing and try to hit the center of the face.

this started out with simple pitches and chips. remedy there was to line up the hosel with the ball. boom, center contact.

not brave enough to do it on 1/2 - 3/4 shots.

funny story, i actually already have access to 'the strike plan.'

amazing what this winter has done to me.

The Young philosophy could also be smarmily summarized as: "if you hit it terribly, just stop hitting it terribly."

Ill probably get the video though to check it out. I like things that are more athletic and less complicated rather than thinking about positions. Golf is the only sport Ive ever played where I thought about technique. Not all on teams, but Ive played a lot of football, basketball, baseball, and hockey when younger and never much worried about technique.
