Best Cleveland iron set ever made? Opinions please

So many great Cleveland irons. Always dirt cheap on the resale market. The best Cleveland irons have always been as good (if not better) than the other OEM's. They just don't get any street cred.

Loved the TA2/CG2's. Great players cavity backs.

Been playing the CG7 Tours for about six years and can't find any reason to switch. As good as anything out there IMHO.

If I had the funds, I would love to get some CG7 Tour Concepts, the CG16 P Stamps, or the 588 TC's. Such great players irons.

... I am surprised, but certainly not shocked, that nobody has mentioned the 588TT's. Imo they were the best combination of playability, forgiveness and feel in a players iron. At least until the release of the P790's. The top line is a little thicker than I like but they check every box in a players iron. Easy to control trajectory and knockdowns were as easy as any iron I have played. If you have the skill, they can be worked both ways. A nice high ball flight with no ballooning. And the feel is surprisingly good for a thin faced iron. And the beveled sole looks thick, but the surface area is the same as most others in this category and turf interaction is excellent. That said, they are hard to find.

Driver:       TM Qi10 ... Ventus Velocore Red 5R
Fairway:    Cobra Aerojet 3/5 ... Kai'li Blue 60R
Hybrids:    Ping G430 22* ... Alta CB Black 70r

Irons:         Titleist T200 '23 5-Pw ... Steelfiber i95r
Wedges:    Vokey 50*/54*/58* ... Steelfiber i95r

I always wanted to hit the 588 TTs, but could never find a set to try out. That's why I couldn't mention them. But, I agree. It is a bit surprising.

They certainly looked pretty good (in photos).

I think Morgan1819 is on to something ^^. The 588 TTs just looked a little bit "GI-ier" than the CG7 or CG16 Tours. I think at the time, most of the Cleveland users in that segment of the market probably gravitated towards the 588 CB's or another OEM, honestly.

This is all why I covet the 588 TCs as much as I do. I wish they would have released that model.

... I wanted to buy a set of 588TT's for my son and could only find a new set on Ebay with DGR300's at 1/2" short. But once I re-shafted and played a round with them before giving them to hm, I just kept 'em to play with my Fly Z+ early in the season or after a long lay off due to injury. (I gave him a set of RBZ Tours) I found they performed almost identical to my Coba's but did not feel quite as sweet or look as nice at address but were most definitely more forgiving, especially the long irons. Imo they are firmly in the forgiving players category but can see where some might put them in the GI category. And ironically, I looked for a set of 588 TC's for quite awhile before finding the TT's.

Had a Raw set of 588P's in Highschool. Those were some of my favorite clubs ever. If they had conforming grooves I'd still be gaming a set.

Had a set of CG4 Tours that i regret getting rid of. Absolutely loved them.Ended up giving them to a co worker after I had the thought that it was time to get fit into a proper set of irons vs off the rack. Juiced monitors and haywire specs led to a couple years of terrible golf. I have since moved on but i learned my lesson to get a reputable fitter vs some kid at a big box store.

Keep having the thought that one day I will swipe those CG4's back when we are at a customer tournament...

Good to see my old thread revived! I've always played cleveland wedges. I've never had a set of their irons. I've hit the 588 cb's and they are awesome. I've heard from a few people that the 588mbs are even better and as easy or maybe even a bit easier to hit. There's something about Cleveland irons/wedges that just make them playable for me. Much like Ping, I can grab just about any iron in from their present or past and hit them reasonably well even the mb or player versions.

My Cleveland wish list in order:

1: 588TC

2: 588TT

3: 588 cb/mb combo

4: cg1/cg2 cmm

Agree. As amazing as the 588CB's are, the 588TT offer a more playable choice for the majority of golfers, especially on less than perfect, softer turf conditions most of us play.

...

Woods/Fairways:  Callaway with Mitsubishi shafts

Irons:  Srixon with Dynamic Gold shafts

588 precision cb/mb. Endo forged. Rogers last design. Ive owned three sets and still have a cb and mb set "in the closet". If i didnt suffer from chronic ho disease it would be pretty hard not to choose those. Ive played more irons than id like to admit, but the mp14 and 588 are the two best feeling clubs ive hit.
