Trip to New Orleans—March 12-15–Wanna play?

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

My wife has corporate meetings in New Orleans March 12-15. As a school teacher, I am on spring break that week and will be traveling with her.

I’m going to golf all day on Tuesday and Wednesday. So, my questions are twofold:

1. Anyone want to join me?

2. Any course recommendations? I’m playing English Turn on Tuesday—probably twice that day.

On Wednesday, does anyone have any recommendations? I don’t want to spend more than $100.

We are staying at the Marriot on Canal street and was hoping to not drive a ton.

Options:

Bayou Oaks—price might be too much—the South course

TPC—is it worth it

Beau Chene—further drive across the Lake—is it a pain to get there?

Audubon—short executive course

Joseph Bartholomew—I know nothing about it

Lakewood—I know nothing.

Stone bridge—looks reasonably priced

Thanks!

John

New Orleans resident here and Bayou Oaks South member. I would play with you but I’ll probably be working every day that week. English Turn is one of my favorite courses in the state. Has a ton of character and has been in great shape but haven’t played it since they started getting all this rain. Bayou Oaks will be in great condition, their greens are always some of the best around. However, if you’ve never played TPC that is where I would play. It should be in really good shape considering it’s only a month and a half away from the tourney. As far as some of the other courses I wouldn’t bother with any of them besides Lakewood. Also, it would be worth calling out to Money Hill to see if they would let you play.

Thank you so much everyone.

I’ve made two tee times at English Turn on Tuesday. 8:06 and 1:15.

If things change for anyone, feel free to shoot me a message.

I’m torn between playing Audubon, Bayou Oaks South, and TPC. I guess I’ll just go by price and convenience.

Money Hills looks awesome. I’m not sure I want to drive that far. But, boy the website sure made that place look awesome.

Thanks again!

I'm also a teacher and headed to Palm Springs early on that week. Thought about heading to New Orleans for the second weekend. If you were still going to be there I'd be booking a hotel room!

That’s funny! The second weekend we are headed to Jacksonville to visit my parents. We are probably going to play Queens Harbor and maybe Marsh Creek.

We are having our floor replaced due to water damage and have to be out of the house for 12 days. So, just traveling around!

English Turn will be great. They probably have the smallest greens you will ever play so I hope you’re very precise with your irons. As far as Audubon, TPC, or Bayou Oaks goes you’re looking at very different experiences. If you’re looking for a serious round of golf then forget about Audubon. It’s basically a par 3 course with a couple short par 4s and par 5s thrown in there. It’s fun, you can play in about two hours but it’s not a real test of golf. It’ll definitely be the cheapest by a wide margin though. TPC and BO might be very expensive since you aren’t a LA resident. You will have a great time at all 3 though.

Money Hill is a hike but it’s by far the most scenic course around.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just wrapped up golfing in NO.

Played 36 yesterday at English Turn. The greens were good but had a top dressing on them. The greens are easily half the size of my home course.

I was the first tee time out and played in 2.5 hours. I then played another 18 with an older couple and we played in 3.5 hours. There were more players out.

It was windy and chilly but not terrible. It warmed up some. English Turn is nice but it is evident that there has been a lot of rain. There were a lot of soft areas and the rough was very patchy. Nonetheless, to play 36 for only 44 bucks, it felt like a great deal. They have an awesome range, btw. I wish I had bought a yardage book because I made a lot of course management mistakes. I think I would play it better if I had another go at it. I was also fighting my swing all day. 81 followed by a train wreck 88.

Today, I played TPC. I found this to be a much easier course than English Turn. The greens were in good shape but were not running as fast as English Turn. The rough was down and very manageable. I bought a yardage book and it made a huge difference. What you see is what you get—there weren’t a lot of surprises and this I made fewer course management mistake. The weather was fantastic as well—a little wind and fun warmed up to about 65.

Again, I was the first off at 7:30 and played in 3 hours. It was cart path only since they are getting ready for the Zurich. Shot a 75. So, played a little more like myself. I would play better if I just took my driver out of my bag. I’m swinging that club so poorly.

I went in and asked to play again and the replay rate was only 40 bucks. Shot a 39 but then the round grinded to a halt after the 11th. After a 20 minute wait on 12, my patience was gone. It took 35 minutes to play that hole. So, I replayed it one more time and called it a day. Drove back in, bought a couple gifts and went back to my hotel.

It’s time for a drink.

Here are some pictures from English Turn:

Another hole I probably screwed up:

I’ll add more pictures when I get home and have access to better internet service.
