Golf for 18 months, shot a 79

First post here.....I just needed to tell as many people as I can lol. I started golfing September of 2016 shooting 120_130+ per round, my goal was to break 100 before the end of the year which I didn’t meet, I shot an even 100 a few times but never hit 90’s that year. My goal for 2017 was to break 100 then 90, I broke 100 early in the year and then in July I shot an 86! At that point I was usually scoring mid 90’s consistently. Once I broke 90 I started hitting low 90’s to high 80’s most rounds for the rest of the year. This year my goal was to hit in the 70’s at least once and I did that yeasterday needing to birdy the last hole to score a 79!! I’m so excited, so now my goal is to get down to being a single digit handicaper by the end of the year. I play from the white tees with a total distance of 6323 yards and 70.9/130 rating and slope. I plan on mixing it up and start playing from the whites blues and blacks this year. So excited to play golf this year!!!

Phew I thought this was a slow play thread. Was going to tell you 18 months is wayyyyy too long to play a round of golf in. Especially if you shot sub 80

Thank you, last year I probably averaged 2 times a week, this year I'm hoping to average 3 times a week.

Playing twice a week and getting to that point is a really good accomplishment. Did you have practice time in as well?

For the most part my practice consisted of showing up early for my round and hitting a couple buckets of range balls to see what kind of flight to expect that day, some days I’d be hitting straight other days everything would be a fade and some days I’d be hitting draws, there were lots and lots of days where my ball striking was horrible and I didn’t know where the ball was going to go.

My home course was only shut down for about 3 weeks this winter so I’ve really been working at the range with my wedges and tons of putting more than playing rounds.

Right now my weakest part of my game is with the woods, seems like some days it’s the best and others I can’t get out of the box. Inconsistentcie kills me!!

Took me 3 years and close to 2 more month to break the 80 on a regulation par 72 golf course.

I was getting maybe 40 rounds of golf per year back then with maybe a few trips to the driving range each month.

When I do well on the golf course, I was just making it at work. When I did well at work, I did bad on the golf course.......who says golf is not a rich man's pastime ?

Haha i just try my best man, I take the safe shot when I get myself in trouble and try to make my next shot my best shot........inventing myself on the keyboard?? If so I’d at least make myself a scratch golfer instead of breaking 80 only once lol

Congrats, some people pick the game up quickly, seems like you're one of them! I played with a guy once who claimed he shot a 78 his first time golfing, I don't know if I believe him but he was an excellent athlete (former D1 hockey player), so who knows, I just wish it came that easy to me.

Was his name Kim Jong il?

I started playing golf at age 13, but did not start playing regularly until I was 46 (1998). I broke 80 on a par 72 course in 2000 after playing 2 to 3 times/week for several years. What you have accomplished is epic!

Unfortunately he was not from the hermit kingdom, but I believe he did stay at a holiday inn express the night before, so there's that.

Not out of the ordinary especially for former baseball or hockey players.

The hockey swing seems to translate especially well.

I went from a 24 to a 13 my first year with my baseball swing. But I have the typical problem of coming too hard and over the top on the downswing. It'll be difficult to unlearn decades of ingrained movement.

That is the definitely biggest thing with former baseball players is an over the top move. I still struggle with it myself.
