Mizuno Irons Naming/Model History

I've stayed away from Mizuno irons solely based on confusing nomenclature. I'm interested in trying out a set, but don't really know where to start. I've got this timeline for reference http://stores.mizuno...ns-timeline.php but it stops at 2011.

I'm looking for a set of players' CB's that might cost $270 or less used that has conforming grooves. Looking at MP 30, 52, 53, 57, 60, 62, 63. What are the differences in these?...other than manufacture year and visual differences.

Looking at all the MP model numbers makes me want to tear my hair out. Help.

Note: I played Cleveland TA3 Form Forged irons up until last year when I bought a set of J40 CB and was switching between them.

The CBs are:
MP50 series, with 53 and 54 being the best and 59 also liked
MX series, with 20/23/25 being almost identical in size, shape and performance.
JPX series - the forged 800, 825 and 850 (Pro versions) would interest you.
The H4 and H5 may be of interest as well.

I don't know which have conforming grooves - there are Mizuno experts who can tell you.

Most people would start with the MP53/54 in this kind of head for best feel and relative forgiveness, and just about everybody likes those. Some would advocate the JPX800 Pro and it is often preferred over the 825 Pro. Plenty of threads about the 850 Pro - some like it a lot, others don't.

Truthfully, the performance differences in terms of forgiveness is pretty minimal within the MP line. There are 3 basic sub models:

Blade MP 30, 33, 60, 64, 67

Cavety / Pocket Cavety : MP 52, 53, 54, 57

Ti: 58, 59 15

The pocket Cavety models offer the most forgivness but IMO it is mainly a visual confidence boost with a little extra launch thrown in.

I'd skip the Ti models because they don't feel as good as the straight carbon steel models.

In terms of performance / value I would pick the 52, 53 and the 57 which are probably the least well liked of the range (personally I didn't find anything negative about them).

The one characteristic of the older blades MP 60 and earlier is the long irons are smaller proportionally than the short irons, real blade fanatics considered Mizuno wedges a bit big, but It does make the long irons pretty intimidating to look down on. I don't think any of the MP range will offer more performance than your Bridgestones.

There is also a hollow model the H4 which was only available as a full set in the USA, the MP H5

The MX 300 is probably the smallest of the more GI improvement line.

I totally agree the naming convention makes no sense whatsoever.

I would not consider the MP 30, 60 and 64 blades. These are cavity backs.

Blades are MP 32, 33, 37, 67, 68, 69, 4

Demanding cavity backs are MP 30, 62, 63, 64

Easier to hit cavity backs are MP 60, 57, 52, 53, 54

Don't get fooled by "easier to hit". These clubs are still for better ball strikers only.

I'll make it easy for you. Take a look at the 53's and the 63's. Decide which one you like better. Then go after a used set of whichever you decide on. They are both great irons. The 53's are more forgiving with a bit more cavity. The 63's have less cavity and are more like a blade. You should be able to find both of them in your price range.

Well that's a bummer. I was hoping all this hype about buttery mizunos would be real.

Absolutely. Never have hit pure mb blades for an extensive time, but then again I prefer the look of the clean cavity backs over pure muscle backs.

Used is what I'm thinking. I don't think I'll ever buy new irons ever again. Why buy one new set when you can buy three decent used sets for the same price?

Thanks for the great information all, looks like it is coming down to aesthetics. Off to Classifieds/Ebay!

Go and get fitted..All MPs are More or less similar with few differences: clubhead size, feel and forgiveness..whichever you feel comfortable with go with that..regardless of MP line

I got bit by the Mizuno "bug" when I stumbled upon a fantastic Craig's list deal on a set of MP-32's. I was playing cast TM RBZ irons and instantly loved the look of the Mizunos. Then struck a few clean shots at the range understood the "feel" aspect. I struggled with the long irons, so I got MP-53 4, 5 & 6 irons. These are drastically different than my MP-32's; much more forgiving. Now, I am in love with the MP-53's and trying to decide between MP-53 & MP-63 7-PW. I personally noticed a big difference between the 32's and the 53's. Like different level of club entirely.

I'm not as good a player as most on this forum, but I concur with the question and have to say- This is the monster that's been created- Not unlike everything in America, we want to sell you something newer and better. Ever wonder why there's a new car model and sub model every year with different included options etc ?? Oh, and just try to compare- Forget about it-

The concept is actually simple-

1. Confuse the buyer

2. Give them no history re previous similar models

3. Make them believe the newest is obviously better...and the one you HAVE to have.

It's tried and true American Marketing-- You have to get the newest and best !!!

EVER HEARD THIS ?? It's the Indian and not the arrow ??

Anything else is a crock.

BTW- I'm playing GI Mizuno JPX-EZ Forged- The newest best model if course.....and, what's more important- Get fitted- The longer or shorter the club gets, the lie angle obviously changes and no.... This is not some kinda scientific mumbo Jumbo machine or PGA only highly skilled crap ???

Doubt I'll move off them within 5 years ??

If you liked the TA3 then make your life simple and less stressed by find a good clean set of MP62 irons. Then, go forth and play.

At the bottom of: http://golf.mizunoeurope.com/irons/ there is a timeline.

And as far as I can tell, comparable models are lined up vertically, so you can see the progression and beginning/ends of product lines in the market.

That's messed up, at least MP-52s are listed twice (once as a blade, which they're not).

This is my thought on the categories with question marks on clubs I'm not sure of.

Blades: 37, 33, 67, 68, 69, 4, 18

Slight cavity blades: 32, 5

Player's Cavity Backs: 62, 63, 64, 18SC?

In between: 60?, 15

"Slightly easier": 57, 58, 59, JPX 900 Tour?

In between: 25, 18MMC?

"Easier cavity backs": 52, 53, 54

"Game improvement MPs": MP Fli-Hi, H4, H5, 18MMC Fli-Hi?

Game improvement: JPX 800/825 Pro, 850 and 900 Forged

More game improvement: EZ Forged

Even more game improvement: JPX 800/825/850/900 Hot Metal

Super game improvement: EZ

Swing DNA: 91/4/3/6/6
Woods: ST 180 or MP-650 - Irons: MP-H5 / MP-53 / MP-4, KBS Tour S - 50º: MP-T5 / 55º: FG Tour PMP  / 60º: RTX ZipCore - Mizuno Bettinardi BC-4

It's not purely down to forgiveness, but material too, hence 59>15>18mmc.

You could be correct, I haven't even seen the 18 MMC yet. Material alone would put the 15s in that same continuum but I remember Mizuno came out with the 5s to be in between 4s and 64s, the 15 to sit in between 64s and 59s and the 25s in between 59s and 54s.
