Bought a sleeve of new CS and CSX, played them yesterday. About 55 kinda wet, little wind here and there. Played by myself, 2 balls per hole, so could give both a test run.

I liked both the previous model CS and then started playing the CSX....so comparing to those, these are a step up:

New CSX is very nice, feels good of wedges and putters, solid off driver. Putts very well, though I never didn't like last years model putting. Both stop very well, can back them up, easier to chip with (I did lots of chipping Sunday)

I will say, didn't have my B game yesterday, more like C- and these balls are pretty long. I found myself at places on my home course where I was usually at when playing B+/A- so they're 'forgiving' I guess, but clearly longer.

I get the impression if I had the clubhead speed, the CSX would be my ball, but I found for me the CS is going in the bag for the year.....what to do with the 4 doz CS17 and 2 doz CSX17 I have.

LOL. THIS is why I never buy more than a dozen or so at a time no matter how inexpensive or how much I love the ball.

Thanks for the review. :good: I'm looking forward to trying the new CS/CSX fairly soon.

I have a swing speed of 105-110 and love the new CS. I am also a high spin player. I did not like the previous version of CS, as it just didn't get out there on my drives. This has been fixed. This is a much better ball in my opinion.

high spin irons, right? like to hear your thoughts on this ball's performance with your driver? you are in the same SS as me, I found the 18 CS to be as long as any premium ball but I found it to launch a tad higher than I like, whcih is why I am keen to try the 18 CSX and compare. If its lower, that would be a winner for me. The rest of the game, the 18 CS flat performs - driver is just "meh" for me.

According to Callaway, club head speed doen't matter with the 2018 line. Only difference is the CSX spins more.

When did this start happening. Historically the X ball in each line of golf balls was the lower spin version. I think the new ProV1X spins more than the ProV1 too.

Not true. Surely you don't think the ball manufacturers got together and agreed on this, do you ?

For a few iterations at least the V1 spun more than the V1x. Now ? Don't know. V1x was a distance version because it spun less.

As for club head speed, Titleist has said for a while now that it didn't matter, at least V1 vs. V1x-wise.

Lol no I wasn’t implying that at all. I was saying that for the past several seasons, if I wanted the lower spinning ball out of the premium ball market, regardless of brand, I would opt for the X version. Now it seems to be changing. Interestingly enough, it varies now from irons to driver as well which is interesting. More than anything, it stresses the importance of trying them out for yourself.

So from what I understand the CS18 will spin less off of driver than the CSX18, but the CSX18 may have a better ball speed than the CS18 at these swing speeds because of compression. Personally lower spin helps me more than a mph or two of ball speed. I was hitting drives that would end up in my usual spots with the new CS18 whereas they were 10-15 yds short of that with the previous version. Irons i still don't know, they seem to be a little longer than my gamer ProV1x, I say this because I flew two greens during my round. I was and am still scratching my head on this one. 195 yd pin and flew with my 6i. The other was a 130 yd pin flew with my 50°. Both were back pins so I would say 5ish yards longer so far from minimal testing. I would assume this comes from less spin on the irons than the ProV1x.

On a side note: I really enjoy the way the CS18 feels. It's not as springy as the previous version. This really helps me control the speed of my putts and touch shots around the green. I've got a tee time for Dark Horse in Auburn, CA this weekend. I will report back after another round. So far this ball is a winner. I love softer balls, because I'm old school and played HS golf with Tour Balatas and Professional 90s. I've just felt the new softer balls couldn't keep up off of the driver, I'm hoping the new CS18 will. Early signs ae good. I'm not asking for it to be longer than ProV1x, just in the same area. And if my irons shots go a little further its a win win. Just my 2 cents after minimal testing so take it for what it's worth.

My testing on a launch monitor with a 7-iron revealed that the CS18 spun about the same as the ProV1 and the CSX18 spun about 500rpm more. The distance gains over the ProV1were a result of ball speed, not lower spin.

A more apples to apples comparison would probably look like this, at least from an iron/wedge spin perspective. The X ball for Titleist and Callaway is meant to provide more spin.

Maybe that's how the results would look like. For simplicity sake, keeping the firmer "X" balls in one test bracket and softer balls in a separate bracket would keep things from becoming confusing (like Titleist did on the launch of the 2017 Pro V1/Pro V1x line).

a little over 40 holes in with the new ball and man I cant seem to find the difference others are seeing. Could just be my ball striking is not good enough right now but even with Driver which I have hit fairly well the old ball plays almost identical to the new ball. It does feel slightly softer, and I can tell it's a little lower spinning. Perhaps once I get on some firmer/faster fairways I'll see the difference.

I recall when the previous ball came out to replace the original Chrome Soft seeing an immediate difference off of the driver and long clubs, Haven't seen it yet with this one though.

Everything I have tested has been Chrome Soft (non-x) and it doesnt sound as if the X is leaving anything on the table this year unless you're chasing spin. A little miffed i'm not seeing the results others have.

I am with you. I have played 2 rounds with them and just not seeing any real differences. Its wet here in GA and there is not much roll so maybe I would see a difference in the hot summer. I did spin a few back today on pitch shots but I can do that with any ball. Woods for sure no real difference. I hit a few today off the tee and then I hit a CS17 right next to it. Both good strikes. Hit a couple of 7 irons into par threes with both balls. Not more than a yard or two and I definitely can count that against my strikes. I still have about 3 dozen or the 17 balls and I am not worried about upgrading at all. Glad I only grabbed a sleeve of the 18s and didn't dive in too deep. Still have around 12 dozen of various other 17 balls so no amazing gains for me to invest for 18.

One review that I read suggested the past versions of the CS ball due to its softness was lacking in ball speed. The 2018 CS shows an improvement in ball speed but there is still a diminishing return if swing speed is high. Teeuplo did a review of several balls and is very high on the 2018 CS. His results were good but his distance with the 2018 CS wasn’t much different for the other balls he’s tested. Here’s a breakdown I did against the TP5 with Teeuplo’s data.

The weather has been terrible in Houston for the past two months, so I’m looking forward to play soon. I have several golf balls I’ve been testing out but I just bought 2 dozen 2017 Chrome Softs at $30. I’m interested about how they compare against the 2018 version . If the difference isn’t noticeable I’m going to stock up on the 2017 at the lower price. I’d love to hear more about those of you who have compared both side by side.

If you watch the videos on Cally's website, I think it was Hocknell who pointed out the X would differentiate itself more at swing speeds of 105+
