M3 and M4 are junk

SomedayScratch

Recommended Posts

Anyone had the chance to hit the M3 and M4 demos? I did last week, and I do not like them at all. They look and feel cheap and don't feel good off the face. Switched back to my G30 and gained 15 yards and accuracy. Also tried out the G400 and hit that really well. I think the G400, M1, and M2 are superior clubs.

Anyone else get a chance to hit them? Thoughts?

EDIT: Sorry, "Junk" might have been a little aggressive lol, I just think they are way overhyped... The purpose of this post was to get your thoughts about the M3 and M4, my apologies if I offended anyone by calling them junk... Some seem offended. I used the term junk because they just feel cheap and weird to me. Maybe its the color scheme, maybe its how they feel at impact. Not sure. Just something doesn't seem right with these clubs.

Agree. I like my 2016 M2, 2017 M1, and 2017 M2 much better. I wouldn't say they are junk, but they are certainly not any better. Same with Rogue. Keeping my Epic.

Cant remember less hype for a TM metalwood release other than the initial fascination with twist face (which I do think is a good idea). Hit the M3 and it certainly isnt knocking my 2017 M1 out of the bag

I would disagree in that I think the "Twist Face" tech is going to be a disaster for TM. I was skeptical when I went just recently for a driver fitting using Trackman III. I tried both M3 & 4 and literally hated both in terms of performance, feel ,sound and looks. I think the face tech is just going to be confusing for a lot buyers. JMHO.

I hit both, and found them to be a lot better than any TM drivers from the last 5 years or so. Neither is kicking my Epic SZ out of the bag, but they'd be solid options if I was in the market. Different strokes, I guess. I thought the M1/M2 performed and felt terrible.

Edit to add: I was able to hit them with basically the same shaft that I currently play in my driver (110 MSI Rogue instead of the 125 MSI version, but very similar profile), so that probably helped. If you hit it with a stock shaft that isn't a good fit for you, you may have less than impressive results.

Similar to BForrester, I'm on about a 4-6 year cycle on woods. I still game an R11S from 2011/12. That being said, got fitted for the 2017 M2 last year and just didn't see the kind of numbers that would convince me to upgrade just yet. However, I got fitted for an M4 last weekend and I'm definitely a big fan. My miss is low heel and I play a cut, and my misses were holding their line better than with my gamer. Sound is a little more muted than my gamer, and I was really liking my dispersion with it (also am moving from a 60ish gram stiff shaft to a heavier 70ish gram x-stiff).

All in all, I don't discount people's dislikes (whether it be simply the club or some TM bias), but at the end of the day most love/hate of the top OEMs' offerings is completely subjective or solely dependent on the person swinging the club. Lastly, I find it a bit funny when people are surprised that an OEM's newest driver offering (be it TM, Cally, whoever) doesn't easily out-perform the same OEM's drivers of only a year or two ago. The margin for "innovation" in the driver/woods sector has been practically pushed to the limit (in terms of COR, CG, head size, etc.) for some years now, with the future of innovation being primarily in materials or some slight tweaks to engineering (not trying to discount Jail Break, or any of the other significant improvements). If I had purchased a 2016 or 2017 M1/M2 or an Epic/Rogue from this year or last, I would hope that driver would at least make it 2-3 years (if not longer) before I saw some legitimate distance/spin/dispersion gains or my money would be better spent "leasing" clubs (not a plug for TM's "Upgrade" Program as I think its still not worth it, IMO).

I wouldn’t stress the issue of these new drivers all that much since the M5 and M6 will be out in soon!

There are several things in this that made me laugh. The title is click bait and it worked so congrats. I've been on this site for 10 years now and it is always the same with each release cycle. One guys junk is another's treasure. To answer the first question, yes plenty have hit them. There have been posts about these drivers for months. TaylorMade had to send a cease and desist to members to keep them from posting pictures. So yes, guys have hit them. As for your findings, that's what they are. Yours. Were you fit for your PING? Did you just grab a M3 off the shelf and swing it with the stock config? 15 yards could be made for when properly fit.

I've seen them and hit them. I would not say they look cheap, sound cheap, etc. The stock shafts? Maybe, I'll give you that. Overall I love the way they look coming from a 2016 M2, the look similar and I like the grey verses the white. I didn't jump at the 2017 models but will test these for sure.

With today’s technology there are no drivers that are consistently 15 yards different in distance from each other if they are properly fit for you.

With the correct shaft, the correct model, and the correct loft, they will all be within a few yards of each other on your best hits.

Im surprised on a website like this that people actually still think there are wild distance differences in the big name manufacturers offerings.

It's the Indian not the arrow.

Right... since I can hit a G30, G400, M2 really well... its my fault I can't hit the M3 well :)

It sure isn't the clubs fault, so take from that what you'd like.

Perhaps you two just aren't a match for each other. Did you hit the M3 w/ the same shaft as the others?

Some clubs just aren't a good fit. Try as hard as you want, you may not get it to work as well as others.

Plus, I'll throw out the whole TM tipping their driver shafts an inch theory. That would make a difference too.

I wouldn't call them junk, but I don't feel any great urgency to buy one right now. Maybe I'll try one next year for about $150. I'm more intrigued by the Ping G400 Max as well as the Cobra F8+.

This is why a fitting is a must especially if u can get outside. For several months I hit all the new stuff both indoors and out. For me the rogue was good indoors but in real conditions it performed horribly n hated the feel, felt cheap. The Cobras and m3/m4 were solid and steady performers in both and same for the ping. Mizuno was mid pack indoors but blew them all away outdoors.

No offense taken OP.

I think the Ping drivers are the ugliest most hideous sounding drivers I’ve ever hit. Simply Grotesque in all ways.

If someone gave me one for free I wouldn’t use it.

“Each to his own” as I Like to say..... We are lucky to live in a time where there are plenty of good drivers out there to choose from.
