As for the areas best public courses, I think everyone likes Annbriar. it is actually in Illinois, maybe 20 minutes from Busch Stadium. Another good public (again, in Illinois) is Gateway National. It is all bent grass. Others on the Missouri side that are solid options are Pevely Farms (Eureka, MO) and Aberdeen Golf Club (Eureka). I like Tapawingo, but have heard the conditioning isn't the best.

others will chime in as well. most courses here are zoysia grass. in may it will prob still be somewhat dormant, but courses should be in good shape. i will second what exgolfpro said about Annbriar. Other courses in the top tier in town would be Missouri Bluffs and I like Far Oaks as well on the Illinois side of the river. Spencer T Olin is also nice in the Alton area. I thought Tapawingo has cut back on upkeep and condition a couple months ago were not up to what I had expected from them.

If you're staying downtown go to Gateway. Short drive across the river and the bent grass should be nice in May. I agree with Annbriar being great but it's much farther.

will do gateway for sure, how about a public to play after ballgame Tuesday (noon start)

I would do gateway after the game, as that will be the closest to ball park and save time. Far Oaks was mentioned before, really good value if the course is in good shape. They had some issues this year with the Super, and the course got away for a bit. Should be better next year though. Missouri Bluffs is overpriced and a death march, Annbriar is really good Aberdeen could be good at that time. Top tier Annbriar and Gateway, a decent gap between them and then Far Oaks, Pevely, Tapawingo, Sto

newolf, Bluffs group then a massive drop off after that.

Phenomenal, play it if you can. Bellerive, Old Warson, St. Louis and Boone Valley are the top courses in the area by a wide margin.

Having lived in west St Louis area for few years, if you have a chance to get on Old Warson, do it. I love that course. It's about 20 minutes drive from Busch Stadium on I-64, an easy drive. As others mentioned, Gateway is closest to Busch Stadium, about 4-5 miles away, a fun public course. Stonewolf and Far Oaks are in Fairview Heights, Ill. About 20 minutes drive.

I'd suggest a 36 hole day and play Aberdeen and Pevely in the same day. They are close to each other and both worthy of playing.

Good choice, it's a fun course, I like the west course. I used to play often with their head pro, Ryan Roy before he moved there for that job.

Resurrecting an older thread, but amongst the good courses listed above, are there any that are decently walkable?. I’m really enjoying walking when I can. In this brutal summer heat, it’s hard to walk if it’s very hilly or its miles between holes. Thanks

Not much public-wise. You can walk Aberdeen and Gateway, Aberdeen being the easiest walk probably. Gateway has a couple short walks between holes. Problem is, no one else is going to be walking there, and you may not even be allowed to at any peak time.

I am going to be heading down to the St. Louis area in a few weeks. I am hoping to play Annbriar and Gateway National. I saw that there are some good rates for those two courses on a site called BirdieBug. Has anyone used them before?

Gateway has the same prices on their website. There are usually 2 pre pay specials each day.

In response to the walking question above, Aberdeen is the best option. The Quarry at Crystal Springs isn’t bad either but has some longer walks between holes and one big uphill climb after 10 but otherwise very flat.

Guys I'm military and will be home on leave in Central Illinois and St. Louis is a short drive away. I will be home sometime around Aug 18 through Sept 14.

1- I won't have anyone to play with and would love to join up with some fellow golfers in the area

2- Does anyone know of any military programs to play at private courses such as Bellerive or Old Warson?
