(yes, I used the search function and most everything is from 4-5 years ago. Just looking for more current opinion)

Heading to OBX with my wife and son in May and staying near Nag's Head golf Links. Will probably only play one round and would like to stay within 30 mins of where I am staying. Any thoughts on Nags Head Golf Links or other area courses? Thanks.

You've got two options within 30 min. Nags Head Golf Links and Seascape. Currituck Club and The Pointe are farther than 30 minutes.

Nags Head and Seascape are fairly similar. Nags head will be better conditioned and there are a couple of holes on the sound. They're both very short target golf courses and can be extremely frustrating if you're not hitting it well, although seascape has a little more room if I'm remembering correctly. They're both fine. I'd probably pick Nags Head since you're staying right there. I think seascape is 15 miles away or so at mp 4-ish

We go in the summer and try to play as early as possible because the courses get so crowded, but that's surely less of an issue in May.

Thanks. If I were to include within 45 mins or so which courses would you recommend?

Currituck Club is the best course. It's every bit of 45 minutes from Nags Head though.

I'd pick The Pointe, Duckwoods, Currituck Club, and Kilmarlic ALL over Nags Head Golf Links.

But it really just depends on how much time/$$ you want to spend. Currituck Club and NHGL are probably the most expensive. Kilmarlic is probably the best course, especially relative to the cost. You may get lucky in May and the rates won't have been jacked up to summer tourist season levels. Also, the traffic won't be as bad in May, so the drive to Currituck or Kilmaric/Duckwood/Pointe won't be as bad as trying to do it in the summer.

NHGL is a short tight course essentially surrounded by condos. I personally don't like it. The course conditions should be good however.

Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately I do not qualify as a "J" or a "C."

I think I'm leaning towards a round at Kilmarlic unless anyone has a reason to play somewhere else in the area.

I can tell you the jokers at Nags Head had closed their course after a rain. They were reopening that afternoon as cart path only and would not let me walk. Weird since it is a course built on sand and flat.

It has houses/condos on it and some green to tee walks. I guess they were worried about me taking too long to play walking?

I stay in Corolla every year and only play over at Kilmarlic. Last year, Currituck was charging $175 a round and the course was in terrible shape.

Just came back from Corolla... Played Currituck at $149. While it was nice, it wasn't a $149 course. Charging that much, they shouldn't be nickle and diming you for $5 for a small bucket of 25 balls. Staff was great, fairways were excellent- but the greens? IF you could find one that wasn't puckered with un-repaired or badly fixed ball marks, they rolled pretty good. Seriously- Every hole, it seemed I was fixing 5-10 of them at a time.

I got the impression that they are charging that price to keep the "riff-raff" from playing too much, and hoping the "Tour-ons" go to Seascape or over to The Pointe or Kilmarlic.

We go to OBX about 5 times a year. The golf is terrible for a vacation spot. But there are ways to make it work.

Playing the weekend afternoons is the shark move. Those are the days renters are coming and going. Less crowded beaches, restaurants, and golf courses. Late afternoon the rates drop. I like kilmarlic the best for value. Currituck is good but way overpriced.

I typically don’t even play. The Pointe has a great practice area. Head over there late in the day and spend time on range and chipping green. That’s enough for me after a hot day at the beach.

I played Kilmarlic last week and it was in good shape and a good layout. The service was solid and they kept everyone moving so we finished in 4 hours despite a fairly full course. The rate is a little high, around $100 depending on the various discounts, but that was for a morning round in what is still the busy season in OBX. I almost played an afternoon round to save a few dollars, but didn't want to mess with the summer thunderstorms and / or rain check. The course is a little tight, but not too long. I would like to play it again now that I've seen the holes as there is some trouble off the tee that is not too obvious and you do not need to driver on all the holes. The greens were soft after some rain the night before, but they were in good shape and rolling well. I'd recommend Kilmarlic if you're in the OBX and looking for a round.
