I am more excited about this release than anything in some time....that club looks amazing. This will be my next set if it's what we all hope it is, that is, a full set of compact, hollow, blade looking, forged player's irons with a straight muscle (my favorite) from Ping! I can't wait to see these and I also can't believe that they're making us wait for it. It's good to see that they're shaking them down on Tour before releasing them. If they end up looking like those protos, they will absolutely sell the shite out of these. It appears that they really want to get this one right. I'll be first in line...

I agree in that I can't wait for these to come out, if they are indeed a full set and not just long iron replacements like I kind of fear they might be. But, I'm not so sure they will "sell the shite" out of these, just from listening to PING reps and insiders (I have a retail account and PING is my favorite company). PING people will tell you that their game improvement lines comprise like 90% or more of their sales, and that the more players oriented clubs are way, way in the minority in sales (i-series, iBlades, s-series, etc). They know this when they develop the clubs. Even though my i200s are as forgiving and have the MOI values of the G-series irons from just a few generations ago, I can tell you that i-series irons are a HARD sell to average golfers (totally different from the ones on this site), and large face, higher offset irons are greatly favored by the golf consumer base as a whole.

So for "us" (gear nerds and lower handicap players) these may very well sell great, but considered the golfing population as a whole, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't even make a blip on the radar.

I'm sure that what you say is true but what if Ping wanted to gain a little bigger market share of the player's iron category? Was the P790 just a blip on the radar? (serious question). I understood that they were in such demand that they can't fill all the orders yet...same with PXG in the beginning. Perhaps Ping could sway all those mid-caps who've always wanted to play a blade/MB but never took the leap. This might be the club that pushes that player off the fence, given the general market's trust of all things Ping, for good reason. In any event, it's sure to be an interesting thing to watch if they do come out with a complete set of these. They will certainly be in my bag unless something goes really awry with them. Their timing couldn't be better for my aging body.

Has been for my store. Haven't sold a single set yet. A local Toronto-based golf forum has 3 or 4 sets in the B/S/T already. I've seen some members here have already bought and sold them too. It's a tough go selling equipment today. Chunk sells.

  • 2 weeks later...

My money is still on it being a driving iron geared for lower handicap players. If so, I'll be buying.

Not a driving iron, full set hollow bodied blade size G700 coming in fall...

Why? Who would want that?

Everyone? iblade sized but i200 forgiveness. TMB and p790 have done pretty well

I can't imagine anyone (that buys ping) wanting a players iron that is hollow.

Again why not? The iblade has done well and these will be more forgiving while looking better.

What is this thing??

It has popped up in a lot of Ping bags at the Career Builder Challenge wrx pics that Greg took. It appears to be some type of long iron replacement. It is definitely not the G400 Crossover or the G700 iron and there is almost zero offset.

It basically looks like a traditional muscleback, but with a toe screw.

There is also an area about 1/2" wide towards the toe section on the back of the club that looks like it will eventually host the product name, kind of like the original Glide wedges had when they first came out on tour as prototypes.

Anyone have the inside scoop.

See pics:

Nice find! EAGLE EYE!

Little late here but... LOL.... your not kidding. Great eye and nice find.

Because no good player wants a hollow body iron.

Really? 790s are hollow, Tiger plays one. Aren't PXG irons "hollow" as well?

Tiger doesn't play a 790. He does use a hollow DI, which is entirely different.

A TON of great players are playing PXG, 790s, and TMBs. I’m talking +3 and better players. Plenty of “good” players will love them

Lots of Ping guys using Crossovers and G700 in the longs. Luke Donald I'm pretty sure is a good player and used the MPH4 and MPH5 long irons. Plenty of TM guys using P790 as a driving iron/long iron replacement. Literally any PXG pro. The list goes on.

There are a few Titleist staffers rocking those AP3.
