I've played a Nike vr str8-fit tour 11.5 dialed in at 11 with a shorter project x 6.0 shaft (44.5" total driver length from the original 46") for years- it's a fairway finding machine. For fun in my Sunday bad I use an old Callaway Big Bertha Warbird Deuce I had reshafted with a Kuro Kage stiff shaft I got a few years back on the cheap. That is also a very useful weapon on the course.

Modern bag:
Nike vr str8 fit tour set at 11
Ping rapture v2 4 wood
Nike vr_s 3 and 4 hybrids
Maltby mmb 5-pw
Carnahan 52/56/60 wedge
Rotating door of putters

Sunday/quick nine walker:
Callaway warbird deuce 2 wd
Callaway warbird 4 wd
Hogan apex pro 4-E
Ping eye 2 W and S
Ping cushin putter

Classic bag:
Palmer Chattanooga driver
Hogan Slotline 4 wd
Palmer Standard 85 3-pw
Same ping eye 2 sw
Wilson professional 600 putter

16 degree here :)

I notice the ball will fly straighter ( not curving or less curving ) maybe because of the loft 16 degree or matching shaft to suit my swing mechanics.

I'd love for someone to explain how the physics work with high launch shafts. I've read about them but it's confusing. I can hit it good but it's almost the same as going up 2-3* putting something like the aldila DWS in the club. It just launches high as can be. Same with my gamer ilima. Meant as a fairway shaft but let's me Play 10.5.

Lots of knobs to turn to find the correct set up for sure.

High launch shafts have more bend in the lower 1/3 (towards the head) than mid launch shafts. When your club approaches the ball at impact, it quite commonly has the shaft bending toward the target - and also toward the ground (toe drop). That extra bend toward the target increases the effective loft on your driver - hence higher loft. All things considered, higher spin as well.

I have ordered a 917 D2 with a 12* head and a long 47" shaft. I ordered the shaft in stiff ( I normally play regular). It should be fun, but I might hit moon balls. I have an old Ping 9.5* G30 head with a 48" stiff shaft that I can play if my timing is really good. I get another 5 - 10 yards with that baby, but only on good days. It is tough to play when it is windy.

IF the 12* Titleist head doesn't work with the 47" shaft, I can always but the VTS Red regular that I play in the 10.5* head as a fairway finder. OR early year, soft fairway club.

Fun game.

A higher lofted driver can help achieve an optimal launch angle.

For drivers, the dynamic loft (the loft of the club at impact) of the club accounts for about 85% of the launch angle. The angle of attack accounts for the remaining 15%. The ideal vertical launch angle for most amateurs will be in the 13-15 degree range.

Example: A driver with a dynamic loft of 15 degrees at impact with a +3.0 degree attack angle will result in a launch angle of 13.2 degrees. (15*.85) + (3*.15)

Well I must admit I am glad to read this thread and a couple related ones. After years of playing 10.5 drivers, stiff shafts, I did a pretty thorough fitting and I was surprised by a couple of things... one of which was the data-truth that I got my best, longest, most consistent driving out of a 13.5 w Regular flex.

I would not have thought it... neither the 13.5 loft nor the Reg flex being more accurate as well as longer... but the data was right there in front of me. It's just been a little hard to accept it, because it was so unexpected, for me, and so I'm glad to see at least some partial validation that you people out there are considering and/or using higher lofted drivers. It makes me feel better about heading off in that direction, towards that 13.5 reg.

One of our Sunday regulars (about a 16 hdcp) just picked up a 13.5 Fusion, dialed it down to 11.5, keeps ball in the air longer so more carry, but less roll out.

Beauty of adjustable drivers, if wet and need carry, loft up....if need run out, dial it down.

All about the perfect launch. If I used a 12 degree I would lose 20-30 yards. High swing speed and low spin player. 9.5 works perfect.

you're a plus hcap. for the rest of us mortals, a little more loft is helpful, lol.

i have used my old ping k15 10.5 hook machine the last 3-4 rounds just to see if i could tame it. if i aim way right i can keep it in the fairway, but once or twice it goes straight and gets me in trouble, so i gotta try to use it only when absolutely safe. always experimenting...the secret is finding a club that will do the same thing every time, but still gets yardage...the 16* is straight as can be (altho i can fade it slightly when necessary) but is a bit shorter off the tee, as might be expected, so the next shot/club has to make up the difference...i think i've finally tamed the 22*, and it's making a big difference. just gotta be careful not to swing it too hard. did pop a 74 wednesday, with 4 birdies on the back! chipped in with pw, chipped in next hole with putter, dropped 2 bombs for the other 2. sometimes lucky is good!

congrats on your hcap! you must really know what you're doing!

fortunately, i can play every day if i want, so i play mon-thu, usually rest on fri, and go practice sat & sun to avoid the crowds. that practice, especially chipping, has really helped. i'll chip about 50 balls each day, most with pw, and it's really giving me confidence around the greens, as noted above. also hit about 50 putts each day, most from 4-8ft. at my age i need a short game to get a decent score...

as you can see, i carry 2 or 3 drivers, lol. i can get away with it cuz i have 2 clubs that can do the work of 4 (31* & 22*). in fact, oddly enough, i can use the 31* on a certain 120yd par 3 by teeing the ball higher than i would for an iron...last 2 rounds i tried it and was on the green both times (my irons are a weak spot. always have been)

Doesn't work for every modest speed player. I'm mid 90s on a hot day with the driver, and I've experimented from 9.5* up to 13.5* through the 915 Titleist line, with 4 different shafts.

Max loft and spin was 13.5 with a red diamana reg shaft. I was finding pitch marks in dry fairways. Often the ball was 6 inches towards the tee box.

Min loft and spin was 9.5 aldila nv stiff green. Difficult to elevate. It would roll, but not enough carry to get out there first.

Tried the 12* head dialed back to 11.25* for awhile, tried an old kai li stuff from the 910 gen, tried the two shafts already mentioned, tried the R flex of the 915 diamana blue gen. Just too much loft. Same problem as max loft, nearly as extreme.

Eventually settled on 9.5 lofted up to 10.25 with the same R shaft. I get a good mix of carry and roll, although I am still kind of on the carry side. I figure that's for the best since I know my ss and the parabola equation. I tried the 9.5 setting w same shaft and not enough carry.

It's all a little weird bc my longest drives were with an older 10.5 with stiff shaft when I first started playing, but the swing is totally different, so oh well.

But for me as a low to mid 90s swinger, lofting up w a more flexible shaft was not a magic bullet, and definitely robbed me of precious yardage.

I also have the nike sasquatch lucky 13 driver. Been really working on the 10.5, but it's still a bucking bronco hook machine. Would like to get the k15 in 12° cuz I do prefer a draw bias (always have), but would hope for more accurate results. Finding the balance is a trial. The 16° is always reliable, but I'm trying to get more off the tee. 13 is gonna get the next practice time.

Here's something wild. Hit 50 balls today with the 31° 6hyb, 75yds to 95yds. Choked all the way down on it, with a 70% swing. Liked it! Put more on those target greens than usual.

I have a Lucky 13 in my trunk that is 43" long, 210 grams with lead tape (average 3 wood weight) and shafted with a s300 (they made s300 driver shafts at one point, not sure if they still do, but they're on ebay). It comes in for the 3 wood if there are not at least two par 5s i can hit in two with a good drive. Its incredible at hitting the ball dead straight. I put all the tape on the right rear, play the ball up in the stance and line up open. Very repeatable 240-255 carry cut shot, even under pressure.

Its a frankenwood but its invaluable on courses where a 3 wood is only a tee club.

For me I think the higher loft allows me to swing a bit harder, but retain accuracy. But I am used to draw drivers since the beginning...we all gotta find what works best! I just know when I step on it I need accuracy as well. Dont we all, lol
