The Stock Tour Swing by Tyler Ferrell – Excellent Swing Instruction Book!

I have read dozens of golf swing instruction books, and I find The Stock Tour Swing by Tyler Ferrell to be one of the very best!

Tyler’s stated goal is to turn you into your own swing coach. He does this by helping you understand clubhead path, ball flight, and your personal swing mechanics. He says that golf instruction is often too vague--and it looks like this book is part of his attempt to change that. This might explain why the book is 350 pages long. :)

Personally, I love his detailed style.

After the obligatory section on what he is doing in his book and why, he starts with a section on exactly what your club needs to do in order to hit great shots. This includes such things as the clubhead path, the modern ball flight laws (i.e. the clubface at impact is the greatest determining factor in what direction the ball starts flying) and why the club needs to have forward shaft lean at impact.

He then goes into what the body has to do in order for the club to do what it needs to do in order to hit great shots.

Next, he goes into how to train your body to do what it needs to do in order for the club to do what it needs to do in order to hit great shots.

After that, he has several other topics, like faults and fixes—which he handles differently than any golf instructor I have read. Instead of just saying “This is a slice, and this is how you fix it,” he goes into “This is what the club is doing to cause a slice. This is what your body is doing, and here are the good things in your swing that are caused by your slicing action. Here is how you fix the slice, but be aware that once this is fixed, the good things from the slice action will be missing and so you will end up with this problem instead until you balance out your swing by adding this or that to compensate for your missing good things from your slice pattern.” The “balancing out your swing” usually has to do with steepening moves and shallowing moves from either the body or the arms.

Note that Tyler does NOT try to fit your swing into a specific mold, and he makes lots of allowances for individual swing patterns. However, he does promote a body-powered swing and a significant hip bump—but not quite to the level of Stack and Tilt. He says in one of his videos that tour pros have 4-6 inches of hip bump, but you can play really good golf with only 3 inches. (He also talks about how to tell if you have too much hip bump.) He also talks a little bit about arm-powered swings, but that is not what he focuses on.

He also talks about how just reading a section or watching a video and then trying to think about it during your swing to try to incorporate it doesn't work--and he tells you what to do instead.

He has a short section on the mental game, too, which I thought would be boring---but instead, I found it very interesting.

Tyler has an instruction website at www.golfsmartacademy.com with hundreds of videos, and they follow this same detailed style. In fact, I think they are some of the best available. They are also well arranged into helpful playlists. (It is a membership site with a 7-day free trial, but no credit card is required for the free trial.)

The book includes a link to a section of his website that has about two dozen videos specifically for the book, and those videos are free.

You know how there are some instructors out there who love the sound of their own voice (and can talk for ten minutes without saying anything useful)? Tyler is not one of them. There is very little fluff in the book or in his videos—which makes it all the more impressive that the book is 350 pages long (and there are over 500 videos on the membership site).

I read this book with a highlighter in my hand so that I could mark anything that I found interesting or important--and I made a LOT of highlights.

My one complaint about the book is that all of the pictures are black and white, and they are sometimes not labeled very well. However, you can figure things out with some thought.

Bottom Line: If you want to improve your swing through a detailed understanding of how it works, I highly recommend this book.

Tyler is excellent. Recommend giving his website a shot with the 7 day free trial. Many concept videos, drill videos, etc I found it very helpful in refining most parts of my swing from setup to follow through - but mainly focusing on transition and becoming less of an upper body dominate golfer. He has many drills to learn individual movements followed by others that tie things together into a swing - for example arm shallowing.

I'm fortunate enough to live in Northern California and saw Tyler at La Rinconada last year for a half day lesson. He's phenomenal, I can't wait to go back to see him again. His Golfsmartacademy website subscription is the best value in golf instruction I've ever seen, the amount of content is unreal. His book is a great companion for it.

One of the most useful golf instruction books I've ever read and I have a library of more than 600.

I think I have every instruction book ever written, so I'll have to pick this up. Too bad there isn't a Kindle version.

Library photos please lads.

Thanks. It’s only fair I offer one too. Nearly goes without saying I too ordered a copy.

I bought a copy last year and finished it in a couple of days, highly recommended. I subscribe to his website and keep up with his videos and there is still material in the book that is fresh to me, lots of nuggets of good information. Will definitely go through the parts I highlighted soon.
