It's what you don't see in this work that is crucial. The cracks go behind that beautiful exterior. The sole plate comes off goes without saying, but getting the insert out in one piece and bypassing multiple pegs to get at the ruin behind, that was the tricky bit.

What was up with the cracked piece in the hosel? Do you know how it might have got like that?

If you play a club without whipping this will certainly happen.

 

If you play a wood without first removing the shaft and resetting it in epoxy this is a possible outcome. If you are lucky the head will fly off into the undergrowth/ pond etc without damaging the head. I

 

If you are really lucky you find the head in the undergrowth / pond.

How does one pull the shaft without over heating the wooden hosel , causing damage ? I thought about re-shafting a few persimmon woods but never gone beyond whipping and refinishing. Taking the head apart is something intriguing. It will take more time than re-shafting a modern golf club, but that's exactly why the process is charming.

Boil a pan of water deep enough to cover the head and hosel. Wrap 2 polythene bags over the head/ hosel for protection against water ingress. Heat for 5 to 10 minutes, remove from water, pull shaft. Done.

Thanks, this should work with the woodies with old epoxy, would it work with the modern day epoxy ? Boiling water produce enough heat to soften the epoxy ? I hate to man handle a nice piece of old block of wood, heard horror story of cracked hosel and additional damage caused by pulling shaft from the old drivers.

Also hate to drill out the hosel in order to fit a modern day shaft. Delmar, of wanting to play a classic driver with new shaft.

Just wondering if anyone has other method of doing this ?

 

I have an old golf club repair book , might go back to search a bit more to see if any other method was practiced. It's a need to know every possibility of doing one task before I dip my feet in it.

When it comes to woodies glued with any form of epoxy, I have no experience or advice. My recommendations are for Hickory Shafted clubs where thermolabile animal/ fish based glue has been used.

I would recommend persuing this avenue outside of this particular topic and thread.
