How long have you been playing golf and $ spent estimate so far?

As much as any smoker hates to ponder money spent on their habit, I too cannot bear to fathom the total amount I've spent on golf. My thought process, priorities, and general level of economic reasoning goes out the window when "spending" on golf. It has become a necessity where I no longer bat even an eyelash, and for that reason alone I can tell you I have spent ENOUGH!!!!!

48 years...and if you included the cost of travel to play, the bar bill, meals, clothes, shoes, etc. it's well into 6 digits.

For the record, it's probably the best investment ever made considering the amazing people I've been blessed to play with and the friends made.

And there was this one time at the old Doral in Florida...

I've just had a revelation! Factoring what I've spent on golf vs. what I've spent on women. I gotta have both. Can't give up women! If I gave up golf, that's more spent on women. (And women ARE more expensive). So can I proclaim that golf actually saves me money at the end of the year?....Yes, single, playing the field!....lol

40 years.

Coulda had a space shuttle...

Yeah, but you’ve probably won enough for the space station!

I wouldn't go that far but it did pay the bills during the times when nothing else was going to. ;)

That's like asking how much I've spent on food. I don't have a clue but it's a lot.

1 year in. Probably spent about £300-400 on equipment factoring in older clubs I sold. £100 on lessons (£10 per lesson for an hour group session of up to 5 people). Around £200-300 green fees and range balls etc. So a total of £600-800. Expect to spend about £300-400 a year from here on out assuming I play at the same level and continue to buy clubs second hand and sell my current ones. Could easily creep up though as I have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and am always looking for that next best thing.

Only been playing golf "seriously" the past 8 years (though I don't play nearly enough). I'm pretty cheap and would wager I've spent well under $1500 (and maybe under $1k) in that period of time.

I can't really afford to prioritize golf trips at the moment (one income and small children - but I'm working on another promotion) though I play when I travel for work. I almost exclusively play military courses at twilight rates and walk with my pushcart or look for Internet deals. I'm on the same set of Hogan irons I got second-hand when I started, and supplemented those with 3 wood, hybrid, and putter purchases from eBay (God bless Taylormade and their accelerated release cycles). Finally, my best friend's wife is a ringer (excellent college player) and wins more golf gear than she and my best friend can use so I've been blessed with an RBZ driver (absolutely love that thing) and new Golf Pride Winn grips.

If I dont' count my college days in the mid 90's (only bought a 2nd hand driver and 7i and just hit at the rage), I've probably only played "serious" golf for the last 10 years, with a couple years break in between when my youngest pair of kids were born. I'm probably somewhere north of $3-4k in equipment alone... maybe another $5k in green fees, range buckets, and a couple lessons. I buy most of my stuff used which helped keep my costs down (thanks BST!) and kids/mortgage payment/living in the bay area has kept me from being a total club ho

I can't believe how little someone puts their spending at.

Live in a metropolitan city & talking $50 green fees minimum.

Equipment, tournaments, charities & Client games add to the cost. Oh and then the trips some take....

Member of a club (net of initiation) is $5,000+/yr. Sign up for Men's nights, events, guests, family, the beer or two after you may really not need..........

Everyone I swear is underestimating their costs by 50%.

My grandfather taught me the game, but I didn't get serious until I came back from overseas in the mid-70s. Helped me get my head screwed back on right.

So I guess I've been playing for a while. As to costs, who cares. ;)

I think everyone is forgetting to include the golf bets/wagers/calcuttas. That could easily be 2-3k a year

Not all of us forgot. Some of us don't bet. and I don't even know what a calcutta is. ;)

Ive been playing for about 25 years. The first 10 years were junior years with MUCH less for costs incurred. Id guess around $6-7k/year or $100,000 total for the last 15 years (would be MUCH more if i didnt live in the frozen tundra of Michigan). I do have to say some of the friendships ive made are priceless and i would give any amount of money for some of them. Couple of those friendships have resulted in business off the course which resulted in profits and i wouldnt have had those opportunities without golf either. So i guess its all relative.

I'm guessing it took me 15 years to spend 5K on memberships. When I started playing in 1988 unlimited golf memberships were $250. Now they're $650. And that's a damn nice 36 hole course.

Wow...... Really???? That's one round @ Pebble.....

Funny how the members here talking about their rounds around the Monterrey Peninsula or any of these bucket list destination are very very quiet on this thread.
