PING hydropearl finish

I love the look of the hydropearl finish when it's new, but it sure does seem to mark up quickly. I'm trying to decide on new irons and I think I have it widdled down to a few, including the i200. If it performs the best I'll still choose it, but finish durability is definitely in the 'cons' column. Are others seeing this finish mark up quickly? After it marks up a lot does it kind of just blend in and look more uniform?

I sure do miss the tumbled finish PING was known for. Even the Guyson finish is much sturdier than today's offering. In my experience, the Hydropearl marks up easily and often and the end result makes the iron look worn...

It does show what I call surface scuffs but a cleaning with a little barkeepers friend and water works wonders. Nothing that would stop me from buying them.

It's weird because I don't mind the chatter all over my Pro Combos as the finish still looks nearly flawless after 3 years. The other set I'm looking hard at is the 900 Hot Metal and the demo set I have still looks great and they're close to 2 yrs old and I'm sure they've not been well cared for. Definitely a 'pro' in Mizuno's column.

A friend of mine just went to Arizona and got fitted for 14 clubs at Ping. Got the G400 irons with the new finish. He's walked TWO rounds since and they irons already look VERY worn. Scratched, bag chatter, the whole 9 yards. To me that is completely unacceptable for a golf club.

Tell him to clean them. They'll look like new again. Mind have probably 15 rounds on them and still look fine.

^ The wear I'm seeing is actual damage (wearing away) to the finish. How is it possible to clean? Does the bar keepers friend ultimately just buff away all the finish and thus evens out the look?

The total opposite for me. My iBlades still look brand new after countless rounds and I even use them on the range. You can also send your clubs back to Ping (for a price) and they will refinish the clubs (face only) when desired. Take a quick look at eBay for used sets and you will see not much wear. I would not use something too abrasive on the finish, you might wear away the effects of the finish to repel water.

That's a shame. I have a set of G10 that look hardly used at all. Was one of PING best traits! Had a brand new set of Steelhead XR last year and they looked horrible after 4 rounds. It was very upsetting.

Might be helpful if you could post a couple of close up pics.

I don't own a set at the moment, just based on sets I've seen on the rack (new) and then used sets at the local shop. I did recently buy a gently used set on ebay that looked great other than the finish wear. They couldn't have been used more than 5 rds or so. Just bought them to demo, whichever set I decide on will be ordered new.

Love the tumbled finish. Have a back-up set of i3 Blades that are 18 years old and looks new. Indestructible finish. If Ping offered the tumbled finish as an upgrade cost, I would buy the i200’s in a second.

We just had a thread a week or so ago on this exact same topic. Repeating myself again but...the Ping finish is chrome, with some sort of treatment to create a frosted appearance. Oh, and the face is painted with some sort of coating too. The frosting will scuff up quickly but the overall finish is very durable. The face coating wears off quickly too. The overall durability of the clubs will be some of the highest on the market. Even after you wear off the chrome the clubs will never rust. I've got some Glide wedges with a couple hundred rounds on them and they still look fine. The chrome is wearing off on the sole of my 60* but the face looks good. Don't worry so much.

The quality of the older Ping castings was very average. There are sink marks on the face and porosity in the metal. I learned this while restoring a set of Eye2's; sanded the face and found it wasn't even close to flat and there were pinholes all over the head. The tumbled finish was a stroke of brilliance by old man Karsten because it hid all the surface defects. The shot peened finish that Ping went to after they switch away from tumbled was even better in that regard. Those types of finish would crash in burn in store shelves of today's market though. Not enough bling.

We just had a thread a week or so ago on this exact same topic. Repeating myself again but...the Ping finish is chrome, with some sort of secondary treatment to kill the gloss and create a frosted appearance. Oh, and the face and part of the cavity on many Ping's is painted with some sort of coating too. The frosting will scuff up quickly but the overall finish is very durable. The face coating wears off quickly too. The overall durability of the clubs will be some of the highest on the market. Even after you wear off the chrome the clubs will never rust. I was hoping you'd chime in Ness. I was too lazy to go back and look through all the prior threads to help the OP out. :)

I searched hydropearl and didn't see anything along these lines. Sorry for rehashing it.

Here is the thread...http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1607778-ping-g400-irons-finish/page__p__17042766

BTW, Rick Shields noted finish wear in his G700 review. Indeed, the frosted finish will scuff up. It won't affect the overall durability though. You can always scotchbrite the clubs and apply a brushed finish so not the end of the world.

At least there's a benefit to be had with it....must have been a toss-up at Ping but, if you get 1000 more rpms from wet turf or in the rain, it starts to make sense. That's a big deal. Like others have said, if you just allow for it and clean your clubs well after playing, they'll stay looking like new. I wouldn't even bother with the Barkeep's Friend....I'd just buff the marks off with #000 Steel or Copper wool with a shot of WD40. It's not damage, it's just that this plating shows impact with other metals, and itself. It'll surely age at least as well as anything forged/plated. We were all spoiled by the cast Pings of previous generations.

Yep function over form. I would trust Ping in their decision with this coating. They wouldn't do it if it didn't provide a benefit.

Do my 1 year old i200 look as worn as my 4 year old i25? Yes, but i'll take the little scuff and chatter marks for the softer feel any day over the i25 and my i5s.
