DECADE by BirdieFire

Can someone run thru what it takes to enter stats? How much is what your using Q?

It's pretty much just what you'd need to track any kind of strokes gained. You've got a page for each hole that will identify the par, your score, and mental score, then you need to record the length, lie, and outcome of each shot.

Off the tee: identify club used, distance hit, and result (FW, L Rough, R Rough, sand, recovery, water, OB)

Approach: distance to pin, result (GIR, miss short-side, miss fat-side, water, penalty, lay-up)

Around the green: distance to pin, lie, result (save/no-save, chip left short or past the hole, 2-chip, flop)

Putting: length of 1st putt, length of any remaining putts, and check mark for if putt was left short

Left, right, left, right. I tried left, left, right, right for a while, but it just didn't have that Tour feel I'm going for.

In all seriousness, you can get pretty good at estimating, so IMO there's no need to walk off everything. I'll sometimes just walk halfway and gauge the rest by eye (I'm always within +/- 1 yard), or most of the time I'll just count steps back as part of my green-reading.

Am I the only one who is a little disappointed with the lack of new content? I have loved the content that has been released in the videos but there really hasn’t been much new in the last few months. I was optimistic that with the addition of “Scott’s Desk” category there would be weekly or so videos. I live in the Nebraska and get very few opportunities to play from mid November through March. It’s just getting more difficult for me to justify $20 a month for an app that sits on my phone unused.

I just signed up for decade, still trying to understand tee strategy. What tee shot would decade recommend given below scenario on ~415 yard par 4?

I think decade says driver as both 4 wood and driver bring traps into play about equally. And all else equal, would be better to be in trap 30 yards forward. Seems like hole without a great option off tee, so might as well blast a driver?

Based on that hole, it's driver with the center of your target pattern slightly skewed to the right away from the bunker and water.

Thanks for your input, a buddy on Twitter sent me this post. Sorry for not getting more up over the winter break. Not to make excuses (while clearly making excuses), I've been finalizing a pretty rough divorce which was completed on Valentines Day (how convenient!). Couple that with the offseason of golf and moving into a new house it's been hard to find both time and material to comment on. Now that the season is in full swing I hope to get about three new videos up per month in the channel. That combined with your standard weekly content will hopefully keep you plugged in for strategy and mindset. To be honest, I don't want to put up much more than that because in my experience with my college programs new content can quickly become white noise.

Thanks for being a member, and I hope to deliver more consistently now that my life *should* regain some sense of a normal routine.

It looks to me like there isn't 40 yards between the left and right bunker. If that is the case, I would likely recommend 4W short of the right bunker. If conditions or the tee being up allow you to carry the left bunker it is driver all day.

This is an interesting thread. While I haven't signed up for DECADE yet I am considering it. I'm also paying for lessons right now so between dues for my club and fees for lessons and fees for DECADE that seems a lot.

I'll be following this thread with interest while I try to decide. Thank you to everyone for posting and especially you Scott.

Scott - I have a question for you regarding match play vs stroke play. If you're playing a match and your opponent hits it in a hazard or OB, would you recommend being more conservative than DECADE might suggest? If I understand it correctly, the idea is to keep your 95th percentile shots on the course and somewhere around 65th percentile on shortish grass. Those being the 65 yards wide with driver and 40 yards between trouble. If your opponent has hit it OB, does it make sense to bring that 95th percentile up to 99th? And the 65th up to maybe 80th? Last thing you want to do is give them a chance to get back in again.

Thanks!

Can anyone help me understand the “mental” score I’m supposed to give each shot?

I’ve been watching all the tutorials but I haven’t found an explanation of how to grade each shot mentally. Is it a grading scale from 1 - 10. ?

IIRC, mental score is only used if you are using the Decade Elite program not the Lite version. But if I had to guess it would be a mental grading scale on each hole

The mental score is based of Michael Lardon's information in the book Mastering Golf's Mental Game. It's a quick read and has a lot of useful information in it.

I’m thinking about getting the app, but I want something that’s easy to input the data in real time as I’m playing. Is it really easy and quick to record shots as you are playing or is the app frustrating to use? It seems like some of you are inputting the data after the round so this seems like a concern.

They have a pin-sheet that you use to jot down notes for each hole. They have a brief video to show you how it's done - seems pretty simple really. But yes, there's going to be post-round data you need to enter.

At least this is my understanding.

I can pretty much remember my round (FW hit or missed, approach distance, putt distance, etc.) after the round by recall. It takes me 10 minutes maximum to enter the data.

Q - is there any way you can quantify how much decade has improved your game? Would you say its worth using long-term?

I can't quantify it, I'm sorry. The tee strategy/planning certainly helped my confidence going into tournaments, especially on unfamiliar courses. I think it is worth it long-term, I renewed my membership. The analytics show what I need to work on the most (75-125 yard approaches and 8-15' putts).

I'm not a fan of having my phone out on the course. Half the reason I golf is to get away from my phone haha. Like Q said, it really isn't more than 10-15 minutes to enter the information post round. I use the pin sheets Decade provides on their website. I like the pin sheets because I try to forget the previous holes as much as possible.

If I were to enter information in between holes, I don't think it would take more than about 30 seconds to enter.

I know this question wasn't addressed to me, but I'll chime in anyway. Decade has been great for my game. I'm a hack compared to Q. My handicap hovers around an 8. Decade really helped me realize I was trying to be too aggressive with my approach shots. I took Penick's "take dead aim" theory too much to heart I guess. I have only played 3 full 18 hole competitive rounds since really committing to DECADE (even though I've been a subscriber for over a year). I just finally decided to be disciplined and commit. Those rounds were some of my best rounds. I shot +3 in the club championship to win the Net competition by 5 strokes. I followed it up by playing the tips at my course for the first time ever. Shot +6 (4.6) (even front - lost focus on the back) and a +2 on a course I typically struggle to break 80 on.

Some of it is swing changes implemented by following the Gankas swing theory but a lot of it can be credited to DECADE.

I can already tell that my mental approach has been appalling. That part of my game needs to improve dramatically.

Regarding mapping, the only hard part is getting that cone into Google earth and sizing it to your specific yardages. Once you have your cone in there, you can map a course in maybe 10-15 minutes. Just cut and paste it 14 times and move it to each hole. I screen shot each hole with a cone and paste them into a word doc I can print out and take with me.

I think the YouTube video has a link to a premade cone, but I made my own without photoshop. I drew lines in Google earth for my yardages then pasted a picture of that into PowerPoint. I retraced the lines in PowerPoint with the shapes tool and then deleted the picture from Googleearth. I was left with just the cone I created using the shapes tool in PowerPoint. You can save the PowerPoint cone as a picture with transparent background. Once you create the cone picture in PowerPoint, open it in Googleearth, size it correctly, then just cut and paste onto each hole.

I think my problem is good earth. The program isn't letting me open anything. When I'm in google earth and click "open" it won't let me select any files on my computer at all. What am I doing wrong?
